The Effect of Lacca Sinica Exsiccata on The Manifestation of Angiogenic Proteins
Kim, Sung-Hak ; Kim, Kyung-Jun ;
The Journal of Korean Medicine Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology and Dermatology, volume 19, issue 3, 2006, Pages 1~12
Objective : Angiogenesis is an essential process for metastasis of solid tumors and Psoriasis. Lots of Researches for anti-angiogenic effect to angiogenic factors have been carried out in the world. So this experiment was carried out for whether Lacca Sinica Exsiccata(LSE) extracts have an anti-angiogenic effect for angiogenic factors. Methods: To investigate the roles of the LSE extracts, we performed MIS assay, western blots using HaCaT cells and HepG2 cells. And then, HaCaT cells were treated with 10, 50, 100, 250,
LSE extracts. After 4hrs, HaCaT cells were theated with IGF-II protein for 1hr. HepG2 cells were treated with 1, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200
LSE extracts. After 4hrs, HepG2 cells were theated with
for 24hrs Results: 1. In
density we confirmed the inhibition effect of LSE extracts to
activation which was induced by IGF-II in HaCaT cells. 2. In
density we confirmed the inhibition effect of LSE extracts to
activation which was induced by
in HepG2 cells. 3. In
density we confirmed the inhibition effect of LSE extracts to VEGF activation which was induced by
in HepG2 cells. Conclusion: The above-mentioned results proved that LSE extracts reduced
protein level in the HaCaT cells and HepG2 cells. These results suggest that inhibition of HaCaT cell and HepG2 cell proliferation by LSE extracts contributes to the anti-angiogenic activities on the keratinocytes and hepatocellular carcinoma.
Effect of Gamiokyaek-tang on Immediate Type Hypersensitivity
Tsung, Pei-Yun ; Kang, Kyung-Hwa ; Kim, Won-Il ;
The Journal of Korean Medicine Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology and Dermatology, volume 19, issue 3, 2006, Pages 13~21
Object : We investigated the effect of Gamiokyaek-tang (GOYT) on immediate type hypersensitivity. Methods : We investigated anti-dinitrophenyl (DNP) IgE-mediated passive cutaneous anaphylaxis and acetic acid-induced vascular permeability in rodents. Also perfonned MTT assay and b-hexosaminidase activity is measured in RBL-2H3. Results : GOYT inhibited passive cutaneous anaphylaxis and acetic acid-induced vascular permeability by oral administration. All the concentrations of GOYT from 0.1 to 5 mg/ml didn't have an effect on cell viability and cytotoxicity. b-hexosaminidase release in RBL-2H3 was significantly reduced by 2 and 5 mg/ml of GOYT. Conclusion : These results indicate that GOYT have inhibition effects on immediate type hypersensitivity .
The Effects of Rehmannia glutinosa on the Protein Expression Related to the Angiogenesis, Cell Survival and Inflammation
Kim, Sung-Beom ; Kim, Kyung-Jun ;
The Journal of Korean Medicine Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology and Dermatology, volume 19, issue 3, 2006, Pages 22~33
Objective : Angiogenesis induced by hypoxia and inflammation are an essential process of solid tumors and psoriasis. We researched the HIF-1
(hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha), VEGF(Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor), survival related PI3K-Akt, and inflammation related COX-2 protein expressions to get the information of the mechanism and effects of Rehmannia glutinosa in HepG2 and HaCaT cell lines. Method : To investigate the roles of the Rehmannia glutinosa extract, we performed MTS assay and western blots using HaCaT cells and HepG2 cells. HaCaT cells and HepG2 cells were treated with
Rehmannia glutinosa extracts. After 4hrs, HaCaT cells were treated with IGF-II protein for 24hrs and HepG2 cells were treated with
. Results : 1. We could ohserve that the reduction of the protein level of HIT-1
induced by IGF-II in HaCaT cells. 2. We Could ohserve that the decreased PI3K-Akt and COX-2 expression level by Rehmannia glutinosa extracts treated in HaCaT cells independently ith ERK1/2. 3. We could observe that the reduction of the protein level of HIF-1
in HepG2 cells. Conclusion : These results suggest that Rehmannia glutinosa extracts contributes to the anti-survival pathway and anti-inflammatory activities. Also, we could assume that Rehmannia glutinosa act as anti-inflanmmatory or anti-hypoxia agents via reduction of COX-2 and HIF-1
The Experimental Study on the Effect of Herbal Exrtacts on Hair Growth and Acnes
Oh, Young-Sun ; Roh, Sek-Seun ; Oh, Min-Suck ;
The Journal of Korean Medicine Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology and Dermatology, volume 19, issue 3, 2006, Pages 34~54
The effects of four extracts of medicinal herbs, Rubus coreanum, Acorus calamus, Morus alba and Rehmannia glutinosa on hair growth activity and acnes control were investigated. In the course of screening natural extracts for hair growth, we found that the extract of dried root of Rubus coreanum has the hair growth promoting effect. After topical application of these extracts to the back of C57BL/6 mice, the earlier conversion of telogen-to-anagen phase was induced. The growth of dermal papilla cells and mouse vibrissae hair follicle cultured in vitro, however, was not affected by treatment of these extracts. Furthermore these extracts do not possesspotent inhibitory effect on
I and II activity and anti-bacterial effect on Escherichia coli , Propionibacterium acnes, Pityrosporum ovale, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidemidis, and Candida albicans. RT-PCR analysis showed that these extracts did notinduce mRNA levels of growth factors such as insulin-like growth factor-I, keratinocyte growth factor, hepatocyte growth factor and vascular endothelial growth factor in dermal papilla cells. These results suggest that Rubus coreanum has hair growth promoting effect. However, the effects of these materials on the hair growth promotion are not mediated through inhibition of
I and II activity, stimulation of hair follicle cells and expression of growth factors in the dermal papilla cells.

Park, Jong-Won ; Nam, Hae-Jeong ; Kim, Yoon-Bum ;
The Journal of Korean Medicine Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology and Dermatology, volume 19, issue 3, 2006, Pages 75~89
Background & Objectives : Rhinitis is an inflammation of nasal mucosa and the symtoms are watery rhinorrhea, sneezing, itchy nose, and nasal obstruction. Rhinitis is classified into allergic rhinitis and nonallergic. Allergic rhinitis is an immune reaction by allergen, and vasomotor rhinitis which is nonallergic noninfectious hypersensitive reaction. The incidence of allergic rhinitis has increased and the rate of vasomotor rhinitis is high. However there have been no studies about vasomotor rhinitis compared with allergic rhinitis. And there have been no studies so far performed on the effect of Tongkwansan. Therefore this study is aimed to find out the effects of Tongkwansan on allergic rhinitis and vasomotor rhinitis. Materials and Methods : Fifteen BALC/c mouses divided into three groups : normal group, control group and sample group. To induce the allergic rhinitis in control group and sample group, mouses were sensitized intrapertioneally 0.1 % ovalvumin solution three times at intervals of 1 week. Then intranasal sensitization was performed by diffusing 0.1 % ovalbumin solution 3 times at intervals of 2 days. After that time, mouses in the sample group were oral and administration treated by Tongkwansan for 28 days. We observed changes in nasal mucosa and submucosa; also changes in the segment of leucocyte, erythrocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, eosinophil, IL-4 and
in blood. We used the statistical methods of ANOVA test(p<0.05). Results : There were no significant changes statistically in leucocyte, erythrocyte, neutrophil, lymphocytem, monocyte, eosinophil, IL-4 and
in blood(p<0.05). Hypertrophy of epithelium in nasal mucosa and expansion of glandular cells in nasal submucosa were decreased in treated group when compared with control group. Conclusion : According to above results, it is supposed that Tongkwansan has significant effects on vasomotor rhinitis which is nonallergic and noninfectious.

Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by the appearance of red, flacking, greasy lesions in regions rich in sebaceous glands. There are various opinions about the relation between seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff. Considering all available data, we consider seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff to be differing severity manifestations of similar origin. The known etiologies of seborrheic dermatitis are the abnormality of lipid and hormnes, Malassezia species, immune response. We recently focus on the relation between seborrheic dermatitis and HIV positive and AIDS patients, seborrheic dermatitis and neurological disease. The treatments of seborrheic dermatitis include topical treatments, oral treatments. There are non-specific agents, antifungal medication, corticosteroids in the topical treatments. Narrow band UVB and oral medications are known as the prophylaxis of seborrheic dermatitis but we need further study. In traditional korean medicine, the literature studies and case reports have been published. But we don't know what herbal medicine has antifungal effect against Malassezia species. So we should discriminate herbal medicines which have antifungal effect against Malassezia specieses. Then we could treat seborreic dermatitis by traditional korean medicine effectively.

The Journal of Korean Medicine Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology and Dermatology, volume 19, issue 3, 2006, Pages 134~145
Objective : This study was carried out to investigate what type of assumption and conditions are needed for the application of various statistical techniques such as descriptive statistics, t-test, analysis of variance, correlation analysis, regression analysis and chi-square test and to evaluate that they are used correctly in the research process. Methods : One more methods of statistical analysis were used in 91 papers among 162 papers selected from the journal of Korean oriental medical Ophthalmology & Otolaryngology & Dermatology from April 2003 to December 2005. So we analysed the type of statistical analysis method in 91 papers(clinical and experimental study) and assessed the their validity of statistical techniques by the check list consisting of 34 items(3 items for validity assessment of descriptive statistics, 6 items for t-test, 7 items for analysis of variance, correlation analysis and regression analysis, respectively, 4 items for chi-square test) Results : 1. The type of 65(40%) cases is experimental trial, the type of 55(34%) cases is case report, the type of 26(16%) cases is clinical trial and the type of 16(10%) cases is review, in 91 papers using statistical techniques among 162 papers selected from the journal of Korean oriental medical Ophthalmology & Otolaryngology & Dermatol-ogy from April 2003 to December 2005. 2. One more methods of statistical analysis were used in the experimental and clinical study. When we classified 125 units using statistical analysis methods in 91 papers according to statistical techniques such as descriptive statistics, t-test, analysis of variance, correlation analysis, regression analysis and chi-square test, the number of independent sample t-test is 33(26%), the number of only descriptive statistics is 28(22%), the number of independent sample t-test is 33(26%), the number of only descriptive statistics is 28(22%), the number of one way ANOVA is 15(12%), the number of non-parametric test 10(8%). 3. After carrying out one way ANOVA, the number of using multiple comparison methods is 15(Scheffe:6(26%), Duncan:4(17%), Dunnett:3(13%), Tukey:2(9%)) out of 23 (total case carrying out one way ANOVA). 8(35%) out of 23 did not enforce multiple comparison methods after carrying out one way ANOVA. 4. From the assessment of validity about 63 cases using statistical techniques(except descriptive statistics), 5(8%) cases are proper, the other 58(92%) are improper, so we recognized a serious misuse of statistical application in our journal. 5. The number of case below 10 sample size in experimental and clinical study(except descriptive statistics) is 31(34%) and frequent. Also the number of case containing no mention of sample size is 41(45%, including culture study). 6. For example of statistical error, there are wrong choice of statistical technique, lack of check on standard assumption(such as standard distribution, equivariance, independence), and so on. Conclusions : We investigated the validity of statistical analysis methods in our journal by check list consisting of 34 items and suggested correct statistical analysis methods. We should practice the spread of education about statistical analysis methods and precis application, enhance objectivity and reliability of our thesis and further correspond with purpose of scientific study.

Kim, Nam-Kuon ;
The Journal of Korean Medicine Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology and Dermatology, volume 19, issue 3, 2006, Pages 232~236
Objectives : Strabismus refers to the oculomotor muscles imbalance that results from improper alignment of the visual axes of the two eyes. It may be divided into paralytic and nonparalytic strabismus. Paralytic strabismus is primarily result from neurologic problem and nonparalytic strabismus is more strictly opthalmologic problem. At first we used this method(electroacupuncture at oculomotor muscles) and gained good recoveries for adult paralytic strabismus cases or Miller-Fisher syndrome, and I tried to know the effective and safety for children cases. Methods : We treated the case by using the electroacupuncture at paralytic oculomator muscles. The case was treated almost daily and every treatment was enforced 10 minutes. We use the PG-306 electra-acupuncture products(Suzki Iryoki Co. Japan) and apply the low consequence wave of I-8Hz Results : We found that the case was recovered perfectly in short term and appealed any sides effect or compliant. So I try to apply this treatment in many children cases and make the treating protocol for them.
