Insect Visitors to Peach and Plum Blossoms

Insect visitors of peach and plum blossoms and their activities were observed from Apr. 1 to Apr. 30, 1987 in the orchard of Gyeongsang National University, Jinju, Gyeongnam. A total of 22 species of 22 genera from 18 families and 4 orders, and 20 species of 20 genera from 14 families and 4 orders were collected on peach and plum blossoms, respectively. The most number of insects visited flowers around 11 a.m. or around 2 p.m., depending on weather. Most of the species and numbers were collected at the time of 80%-blooming in peach tree but no distinct trend was observed in plum tree.
On the Kinds of Ants(Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and Vertical Distribution in Jiri Mountain

Vertical distribution of ants were studied in Jiri mountain by collecting 15 times at 42 sites for 3 years since 1984. 31 species of 16 genera in 3 subfamilies were collected during the survey. The following 6 species, i.e., Formica japonica, F. lemani, Lasius niger, L. alienus, Pheidole fervida and Myrmica ruginodis were dorminant one, but 9 species such as Leptothorax congruus, Pheidole nodus, Aphanogaster japonica, Jollenhovia emeryi, Camponotus tokioensis, Polyrhachis lamellidens, Phagiolepsis mandjurica, myrmica yessensis and M. sulcinodis were rare species. The ant of Jiri mountain consisted of 16 species in Formicinae, 13 species in Myrmicinae and 2 species in Ponerinae. Ponerinae was distbriuted as far as 1,800m, but Myrmicinae and Formicinae to 1,915m. Only 8 species-Myrmica ruginosis, Myrmica sp., M. yessensis, M. sulcinodis, Leptothorax acevorum, Formica japonica, F. lemani and Camponotus japonicus-were collected at the submit of Jiri mountain, Cheonwangbong. The vertical distribution of C. atrox was ranged from 800m to 1,800m.
Studies on the Fauna of the Soil Microarthropods in Forest Floor

This study was conducted during Oct. 1986
Apr. 1987 to investigate the distribution, dominance and species diversity of soil arthropods communities from two collection sites of Suwon and Mt. Jiri. A total of 2,989 specimens of 3 orders, 20 families and 19 species were identified. In overall dominance index, Suwon community showed lower value than Mt. Jiri community. Seasonal variation dominance index were higher in Suwon community than those in Mt. Jiri community.

Change in Major Carbohydrate Contents in Diapausing and Nondiapausing Pupae of the Fall Webworm, Hyphantria cunea

Synergistic Action of Insecticide Mixtures to the Green Peach Aphid(Myzus persicae Sulz.) Resistant to Acephate and Demeton-S-methyl

The toxicities of binary mixtures of the four insecticides acephate, demeton-S-methyl, cypermethrin and pirimicarb to the two strains of green peach aphid (Myzus persicae Sulz.) resistant to acephate and demeton-S-methyl were investigated and compared to the toxicities of their individual insecticides. The synergistic action of the insecticide mixtures to the insects were greatly varied with the kind of insecticide combinations, their mixture ratios, and the origin of resistance by an insecticide. The maximum synergistic action of acephate for the acephate resistant strain was obtained at 1:1 mixed with demeton-S-methyl. However, there were some antagonistic effects in all acephate mixtures with pirimicarb and cypermethrin. With the strain of demeton-S-methyl resistance, acephate, cypermethrin, and pirimicarb were synergized at the given mixture ratios by demeton-S-methyl. The maximum synergistic effect was observed at 2:3 with acephate, 1:1 with cypermethrin and 3:2 with pirimicarb.
Joint Toxic Action of Mixtures of Organophosphorus and Carbamate Insecticides to Nilaparvata lugens and Nephotettix virescens

The toxicity of the mixture at 1 to 1 ratio among the insecticides, BPMC, carbofuran, diazinon and monocrotophos to the brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens and green leafhopper (GLH), Nephotettix virescens were tested and compared to their toxicities of individual insecticides. Among the mixtures, carbofuran combinations with BPMC and diazinon showed synergistic effect in toxicity to BPH. There was also synergistic action in toxicity with mixture of BPMC plus monocrotophos to GLH. Other combinations were independent in toxic action to both insects.
Studies on Resistance to Organophosphorus Insecticide in the Brown Planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens

This experiment was carried out to evaluate the difference in the biochemical characteristic of the brown planthoppers of the insecticide risistant, susceptible strains and their hybrid progenies. Activity of the esterase isozyme separated by electrophoresis method was remarkably high in the resistant strain as compared with the susceptible strain. Esterase activity between the insecticide-treated strains and the non-insecticide strains was not degraded in the resistant strain and the
, but remarkably degraded in the susceptible strain. The increase of esterase activity was associated with the development of resistance, and that was inherited with a dominant gene.
Production of Host-specific Toxin by Alternaria mali and its Biological Activity

Pathogenic isolates of Alternaria mali produced host-specific toxin(AM-toxin) in liquid culture. The toxin was also released by germinating spores of the fungus. The physiological event of apple leaves induced by germinating spores was an increased loss of electrolytes from susceptible leaves. This reaction was evident soon after spore inoculation, indicating that the leakage was caused by AM-toxin from germinating spores. Typical symptoms were developed only in susceptible leaves of apple within 48hr after inoculation with pathogenic spores. Similar symptoms occurred on susceptible leaves when non-pathogenic isolates plus AM-toxin were used.
