Design of a low frequency, high power acoustic transducer to use in the echo sounder
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 36, issue 1, 2000, Pages 1~11
A low frequency, high power hydroacoustic transducer with 7 tonpilz piston elements assembled in a circular array suitable for marine application, such as the transmission of underwater information and the development of new fisheries resources in the deep sea zone was designed. A modified Mason's model was applied to monitor and to simulate the transducer behavior at each step during the fabrication. The in air, and in water constructed tonpilz transducer was tested experimentally and numerically by changing the size and the type of the material for head, tail and acoustic window. Also, the developed transducer was excited by pulse signals and the received waveform was analyzed. The resonance peaks in the transmitting voltage response(TVR) of a single tonpilz element without housing were observed at 11.33kHz in air and 10.93kHz in air and 10.93 kHz in water, respectively, with the overall electrical-acoustic efficiency of 43.7%. The value of TVR of single tonpilz element with aluminum housing in water was 129.87dB re 1
Pa/V at 12.25 kHz with the frequency bandwith of 2.15 kHz and half beam angle of 30.2
at -3dB.The resonance peaks in the transmitting voltage response of the 7 element circular transducer were observed at 11.50 kHz in air and 11.45 kHz in water, respectively. The value of TVR in water 144.84 dB re 1
Pa/V at 11.5kHz with the frequency bandwith of 4.25 kHz and the half beam angle of
at -3dB.Reasonable agreement between the experimental measurements and the theoretical predictions for the directivity patterns, TVRs and the impedance characteristics of the designed transducer was achieved.
Improved Design in Fishing Operation System for Small Inshore and Coastal Fishing Vessels-I -Design of a Automatic Winch System-
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 36, issue 1, 2000, Pages 12~24
The electro-hydraulic servo winch system built in a automatic tension control equipment was designed with a latent need for an advanced system in fishing operations of the inshore and coastal fishing vessels. In order to keep the constant tension condition of warp under loading, a tension control circuit was added to the servo winch system. The dynamic performance in the open loop behaviour of the designed winch system was investigated and its applicability was tested for various possibilities of load using a load generator especially developed in order to this study. The mechanical characteristics of this system is different from that of a conventional type, that is, the tension, length, line speed and drum revolution can be automatically controlled by the information from various sensors, such as torque, rpm and pressure transducers. from the experiment results, it was verified that the servo winch system has very good output and tracking behaviour for the control input signals in different operating conditions though overshoot of out 8% in the transient characteristics of torque under the load though a overshoot of about 8% in the transient characteristics of torque under the load condition can be observed when the opening of servo valve, adjustable by the input voltage between - 10 V up to 10 V, changed suddenly.Consequently, the improved fishing winch system can be effectively used as the automatic shooting and hauling equipment of low cost for small inshore and coastal fishing vessels which engage in net fishing.
Improved Design in Fishing Operation System for Small Inshore and Coastal Fishing Vessels -II -Design of a Remote Steering System-
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 36, issue 1, 2000, Pages 25~32
A combination steering system was designed to provide the flexibility in controlling the steering wheel in fishing operations of the inshore and coastal fishing vessels. The designed steering system basically is consisted of three driving units, such as a electrically driven hydraulic pump unit with a solenoid control valve, a DC motor driven hydraulic pump unit and a manually driven hydraulic pump unit, and two controllers to provide remote steering on the deck, respectively. The steering torque was measured and analyzed to investigate the dynamic performance of the developed steering system. The steering system showed excellent linearity between the working pressure of cylinder and the torque of rudder post in case of increasing in rudder angle from
that is, the steering torque increased from
and then the working pressure of cylinder fluctuated from 6.3 kgf/cm super(2) to 16.4 kgf/cm super(2). The steering time of 3.2 sec in remote hydraulic steering by the on/off solenoid valve control was much faster than 13.2 sec in the manual steering by the helmsman and 11.6 sec in the electric steering by a DC motor, and then it was verified that operation of one unit does not affect other units in combination steering system in any way. Furthermore, the developed steering system can be remotely controlled in multiple stations of the deck during the fishing operation and the automatic pilot steering unit can be used to add hydraulic steering.
Analysis on the Dynamic Responses of Fishing Vessels in a Seaway
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 36, issue 1, 2000, Pages 33~44
Ships in a seaway will encounter dangerous situation, such as slamming, stranding, and capsizing. The number of capsizing is small, but the loss due to them is very large from the viewpoint of human life, property, and the environmental pollution. The number of capsizing of fishing vessels is about 62% of total number of capsizing, and the half of them is originated from the operational mistake in a seaway. So the dynamics and the capsizing phenomena are to be studied, and the guide for the safe operation of a fishing vessel in a seaway are to be specified. The hydrodynamic forces consist of radiation forces (which are due to the motion of a ship), Froude-Krylov forces (which is due to the incoming waves), and diffraction forces (which is due to the wave and ship interaction). These forces are calculated by well-known strip method. Using the calculated forces, the motion of a ship in a regular sea is obtained. In the real seaway, the waves are very irregular, therefore the statistical analysis is very helpful. In this paper, using the results of the motion in a regular seaway and the wave spectrum, the motion in a irregular seaway are obtained and analyzed.
Resistance to Weathering with Materials for fisheries Facilities 1. Photodegradation Mechanisms of Netting Twines for Fisheries Facilities
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 36, issue 1, 2000, Pages 45~53
To analyze the photodegradation mechanism of materials for fisheries facilities which stand for considerable time immediately under or even partly above the water surface, such as cage collar, cage net, stationary fishing gear, egc. after 900 hours exposure, weathering experiments on 3 kinds of netting twines like dyed polyethylene(PE) and nylon, and non-treated high strength PE(Hi-PE) were carried out by using xenon light source. The results obtained are as follows : It was observed by scanning electron micrograph(SEM) that a good protection by pigments was obtained in PE and nylon specimen, while crack was rapidly progressed at the surface of Hi-PE one owing to etching by UVR. There was a little increase in density resulting from reorientation of polymer chain, chain scission, etc. in Hi-PE specimen. A wide angle X-ray diffraction showed that 3 kinds of specimens had no fundamental changes in polymer crystalline structure considering each 2
of diffraction peak. Remaining tenacity of netting twines was in order of PE, nylon, and Hi-PE after having been exposed to the effect of 900 hours. PE and nylon treated with stuffs were shown to be more resilient than non-treated Hi-PE as confirmed by SEM.
development of a Depth Control System for Model Midwater Trawl Gear Using Fuzzy Logic
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 36, issue 1, 2000, Pages 54~59
This paper presents a control system that uses a fuzzy algorithm in controlling the depth of a model midwater trawl net, and experimental results carried out in the circulating water channel by using a model trawl winch system. The fuzzy controller calculates the length of the warp to be changed, based on the depth error between the desired depth and actual depth of the model trawl net and the ratio of change in the depth error. The error and the error change are calculated every sampling time. Then the control input, i.e. desirable length of the warp, is determined by inference from the linguistic control rules which an experienced captain or navigator uses in controlling the depth of the trawl winch controller and the length of the warp is changed. Two kinds of fuzzy control rules were tested, one was obtained from the actual operations used by a skilled skipper or navigator, and the other was a modified from the former by considering the hydrodynamic characteristics of the model trawl system. Two kinds of fuzzy control were tested, one was obtained fro the actual operations used by a skilled skipper or navigator, and the other was a modified from the former by considering the hydrodynamic characteristics of the model trawl system. The results of these model experiments indicate that the proposed fuzzy controllers rapidly follow the desired depth without steady-state error although the desired depth was given in one step, and show robustness properties against changes in the parameters such as the change of the towing sped. Especially, a modified rule shows smaller depth fluctuations and faster setting times than those obtained by a field oriented rule.
Estimation of the Virtual Mass of Conical Nets using Circulating Water Channel
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 36, issue 1, 2000, Pages 60~65
The virtual mass of net is an important parameter in the analysis and control of net movement in the water. This experiment was performed with the purpose of getting a relation on the quantity of netting and virtual mass of trawl nets using the circulating water channel that can control flow speed. Twelve types of conical nets were examined. Resistance of the conical net at the steady and acceleration state was recorded as text on the personal computer through the tension meter and current meter. The results were obtained as follows ;1. Resistance(R) of the conical net is proportional to the degree of attack angle in the sam e amount of twine material.2. Coefficient of the resistance(Cd)could be defined by the following regression model as a function of Reynolds Number(Re). Cd=0.039Re-0.14743. Resistance(R) is proportional to TSA(Twine surface area) and defined as follows; R=21.398TSA-0.12194. Coefficient of virtual mass(CM) could be calculated by the following first order regression model. CM=37.557U-8.96845. Virtual mass is directly proportional to Volume of net(V) or d/l.

Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 36, issue 1, 2000, Pages 66~72
In these days, with development of industry, the use of machines and structures like ships, airplanes, bridges, power plants, and structure for construction has increased and these machines and structures are used in various corrosive environment. Especially, in case of STS 304, which is material for every kind of machine and chemical plant, it makes many problems related with corrosion and as a result of this, there are happening tremendous economic loss. Therefor, in this study, the test for polarization characteristics was carried out to study characteristics of crevice corrosion of STS 304 which is austenitic stainless steel, in NaCl environment. The main results obtained are as follows :1) Part of crevice is corroded, neighboring outside surface of crevice is passivation. 2) In polarization behavior, corrosion potential of STS 304 become more noble as the concentration of NaCl solution increased by 3.5% but the concentration increased over 3.5% that of STS 3.4 become less noble. 3) The current density under corrosion potential was high drained as concentration of NaCl solution increased by 3.5% but the concentration increased over 3.5%, the current density was low drained.
