An, Heui-Chun ; Kim, Seong-Hun ; Lim, Ji-Hyun ; Bae, Jae-Hyun ;
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 49, issue 4, 2013, Pages 341~351
DOI : 10.3796/KSFT.2013.49.4.341
Physical characteristics of PA (Polyamide) gill net and biodegradable gill net made by PBS (Polybutylene succinate) (mesh size 63mm, mesh thickness number 2, 2.5, 3) were analyzed to investigate catching efficiency of the biodegradable gill net for Pacific herring. Total 11 numbers of catching efficiency tests were carried out using commercial fishing vessel at Imwon port in Kangwon province from May to June 2013. The amount of catches were 1,535.7kg (18 species) through the catching efficiency tests and it is expected that the practicalization of biodegradable gillnet is possible because there is no difference for catches between PA gillnet and PBS gillnet. Catches of herring according to the thickness of net twine was the highest at No.2 and the thicker net twine tends to decrease the catches.

Kim, In-Ok ; Lee, Gun-Ho ; Sohn, Byung-Kyu ;
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 49, issue 4, 2013, Pages 352~359
DOI : 10.3796/KSFT.2013.49.4.352
To estimate the mesh selectivity of gillnet for ocellate spot skate (Okamejei kenojei), the field tests were carried out 12 times with six different mesh sizes (121.2mm, 137.7mm, 151.5mm, 168.3mm, 178.2mm, 189.4mm) in the coastal waters of Taean, Chungcheongnamdo of Korea, 2010~2011. In the field tests, the total number of species was 31, and that of catch was 1,410 and the total weight was 618,006g. The number and weight of ocellate spot skate which is main target in this study were 1,004 and 434,592g, respectively. The catch in number of ocellate spot skate occupied about 71.2% in total catch. The others of catch species were marbled sole (8.4%), sea raven (4.4%), japanese swimming crab (4.2%) and flatfish (4.1%) and so on. The range of body disk width (DW) of ocellate spot skates which were caught in this study was 15.2~35cm and the mode was 27~29cm. The estimation equation of mesh selectivity using the extended Kitahara's method was expressed as s
. The optimum value of DW/m for 1.0 of retention probability in this estimation equation was estimated 1.899 and DW/m was estimated to be 1.194, 1.314, 1.395, 1.461 and 1.520 when the retention probability were 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5, respectively. When applied to the retention probability of 0.5, the optimum mesh size was estimated to be 177.0mm on first maturity disk width 26.9cm of ocellate spot skate.

An, Heui-Chun ; Bae, Jae-Hyun ; Kim, Seonghun ;
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 49, issue 4, 2013, Pages 360~367
DOI : 10.3796/KSFT.2013.49.4.360
The mesh selectivity of the gillnet for Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) was examined in field experiments with four different mesh sizes (63, 69, 75 and 81mm) from June to July, 2013 in the coastal areas of Imwon in Gangwon province. The fishing performance tests were conducted with a commercial Pacific herring gillnet and a biodegradable gillnet for Pacific herring together selectivity tests. The filed tests were carried out the total 11 times. The master curve of selectivity was estimated by the extended Kitahara's method. In the results, the catch number of Pacific herring was 9,409 (2,203kg) and occupied 84.2% in total catches weight. The optimal mesh size for 50% retention on first maturity size (female, 250mm) of Pacific herring was estimated as 64.5mm by master selectivity curves. The fishing performance of the biodegradable gillnet was showed to be equivalent with commercial gill for Pacific herring.
Size selectivity of the dome-shaped pot for whelk Buccinum opisthoplectum in the eastern coastal waters of Korea
Park, Chang-Doo ; Bae, Jae-Hyun ; Cho, Sam-Kwang ; Cha, Bong-Jin ; Kim, Hyun-Young ;
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 49, issue 4, 2013, Pages 368~376
DOI : 10.3796/KSFT.2013.49.4.368
Fishing experiments were carried out in the adjacent sea of Yeongil Bay, the eastern cost of Korea from 2003 to 2004 using the dome-shaped pots with different five mesh sizes (17.1, 24.8, 35.3, 39.8, and 48.3mm) in order to determine the size selectivity of pots for the whelk, Buccinum opisthoplectum. The catch species were composed of Buccinum opisthoplectum (45.4%), Buccinum striatissimum (30.1%), Pandalopsis japonica (9.3%), Chionoecetes opilio (8.9%), and so on. The shell height (l) of Buccinum opisthoplectum caught in the experimental fishing pots was measured. The SELECT (Share Each Length's Catch Total) analysis method was applied with fishing data to obtain master selection curve. The model with the estimated split parameter was found to fit the catch data best. The master selection curve was estimated to be s (R)〓exp (7.833R-10.871)/[1 + exp (7.833R-10.871], where R is the ratio of shell height to mesh size. The relative shell length for 50% retention was 1.388, and the selection range was 0.281. It means that the pots of larger mesh size allow more whelks of small size to escape.

Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 49, issue 4, 2013, Pages 377~384
DOI : 10.3796/KSFT.2013.49.4.377
Experimental fishing was carried out to compare and analyze catch characteristics of shrimp beam trawl in a fishing area and a non-fishing area during the period of fishing season and off-fishing season in the coastal waters of Geoje. A commercial fishing boat (4.99 tons) was used for the test fishing. The amount of total catches were 14,654g in the fishing area and 12,359g in the non-fishing area, shrimp catches of non-fishing area were much greater than that of the fishing area during the period of off-fishing season (June and August). However, total catches were 27,670g in the fishing area and 33,004g in the non-fishing area, shrimp catches of fishing area were bigger than that of non-fishing area during the period of fishing season (October and December). On the results of the study, catches characteristics between fishing area and non-fishing area showed the reversed results for the period of fishing season and off-fishing season.

An, Young-Il ;
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 49, issue 4, 2013, Pages 385~394
DOI : 10.3796/KSFT.2013.49.4.385
This study has conducted a comparative analysis on the fishing efficiency of LED fishing lamps by squid jigging vessels, the Yeongrak-ho (16 tons) and Somang-ho (9.77 tons), which operated during September and October 2010 and during October 2011, comparing with MH (Metal Halide) fishing lamp-equipped fishing vessels. This study has also examined vessel's fuel consumption level. The light powers of LED fishing lamps of the Yeongrak-ho and Somang-ho were 25.8kW and 32kW, respectively. Those of the MH fishing vessels, that is, the MH fishing lamp-equipped fishing vessels, were 105kW and 81kW, respectively. The average squid catch in number of an LED vessel, Yeongrak-ho, was 39.2% of the MH fishing lamp-equipped fishing vessels; however, that of the Somang-ho improved to 78.7% of the MH fishing lamp-equipped vessels. Average catch in number by Yeongrak-ho crew was 2.6 times more than catch in number by automatic jigging machines. Average catch in number by MH fishing vessel crew was 1.8 times more than that by automatic jigging machines. An LED vessel, Yeongrak-ho's fishing rate was 17.5%~152.2% of the MH fishing vessels, that is, 61.1% on average, in comparison of combined catch in number per automatic jigging machine and per crewmember. Somang-ho's fishing rate was 6.7%~127.6% of the MH fishing vessels, that is, 73.1% on average. The average fuel consumption level of the Somang-ho, throughout its departure from to arrival at the port, was 475.7l, and that during fishing hours was 109.6l, or 23.0% of the total fuel consumption level. Somang-ho's fuel consumption level per fishing hour was 9.7l on average.

An, Heui-Chun ; Bae, Jae-Hyun ; Bae, Bong-Seong ; Park, Jong-Myung ;
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 49, issue 4, 2013, Pages 395~403
DOI : 10.3796/KSFT.2013.49.4.395
Fishing efficiency of the squid jigging vessel using the LED and metal halide fishing lamp combination was analyzed to reduce the cost for fishing operation utilizing the fishing light system for high degree of efficiency in the squid jigging fishery (one of the representative coastal and offshore fisheries in Korea). This study aims to improve the nature of existing LED lamps and to develop fan-shaped LED lights having 180W of power and
angle of light intensity distribution. The marine experiment for making a comparison of their fishing efficiency was tested by a 9.77 tons fishing vessel from Oct. through Dec. 2012. As a result, experimental fishing vessel showed slightly higher fishing efficiency than the average of metal halide lamp-equipped vessel and 20% energy savings. This means that the combination of LED and metal halide lamps would provide an efficient way to lower energy consumption while maintaining fishing efficiency.

Shin, Jong-Keun ; Choi, Mun-Sung ; Seo, Young-Il ; Cha, Hyung-Kee ; Lee, Sun-Kil ; Kim, Hee-Yong ; Oh, Teag-Yun ;
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 49, issue 4, 2013, Pages 404~418
DOI : 10.3796/KSFT.2013.49.4.404
In this study, we conducted field surveys to investigate and analyze species and length composition of catch from gape net with wings being set in two areas - Masari, Supomri - located in southern part of Jin-do for understanding fishing characteristics of gape net with wings fishery from March to September of 2011. And with those results, we attempted to propose fishery management strategy to harvest fisheries resources continuously. Catch obtained from field surveys comprised total 78 species, which accounted for 53 species of fish, 20 species of crustacean, 4 species of cephalopod and one of polychaete. As to species composition in weight, it showed that there was 88.5% for pisces, 9.0% for cephalopoda and 2.5% for crustacea. As to catch specifics by area, there was 36 species (596,891 individual, 456,551g) of pisces, 17 species (35,815 individual, 12,909g) of crustacea and 3 species (2,876 individual, 3,004g) of cephalopoda in Masari area. In Supumri area, there was 41 species (396,898 individual, 281,457g) of pisces, 15 species (16,113 individual, 7,772g) of crustacea and 4 species (6,792 individual, 72,329g) of cephalopoda and one polychaeta (36 individual, 11g). Catch of anchovy by month recorded on high level on June, July, September in both areas. When considering size composition by month, it was found that new populations recruit to these fishing grounds on June and September. Most of bycatch species including hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus), dotted gizzard shad (Konosirus punctatus), conger eel (Leptocephalous), Pacific sandlance (Ammodytes personatus), horse mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) were juvenile, and grass puffer (Takifugu niphobles), Kammal thryssa (Thryssa kammalensis), Japanese sardinella (Sardinella zunasi) were also small in size. As a result, it is considered that gape net with wings fishery which is likely to catch juvenile needs to be set fishing prohibit period for conserving above stocks during the period excluding main fishing periods of anchovy or fisheries management such as expanding mesh size for preventing juvenile catch.

Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 49, issue 4, 2013, Pages 419~431
DOI : 10.3796/KSFT.2013.49.4.419
It was turned out by the beam trawl survey in 2009 that flora of three phylum 16 species and fauna of eight taxa 68 families 97 species were inhabited in the Seomjin River estuary and western coastal waters of Namhae island. Winter season showed the most various appearance of species with 63 species and markedly several kinds of algae species, while summer season showed the lowest number of species with 44 species. However, the indices of species diversity and evenness were highest in summer, and vice versa in winter. Major dominant species were Crangon hakodatei, Leiognathus nuchalis, Asterias amurensis, Thryssa kammalensis, Luidia quinaria, Amblychaeturichthys hexanema, Oratosquilla oratoria, Charybdis bimaculata, Cynoglossus joyneri, Pennahia agentata. The 10 dominant species occupied at 81.4% of catch in number and 49.0% of catch in weight. There were seasonal fluctuations and differences by station in the Seomjin River estuary and western coastal waters of Namhae island, which brought to the difference of length structures, that is, bigger-sized individuals of major dominant species at station A (near to river estuary) than station C (near to ocean). Species compositions by season and by station were separated to two groups. Winter season showed a separated species composition from other seasons and station A exhibited a different species composition from other stations, which was located at near to the Seomjin River estuary.

Lee, Sun Kil ; Chang, Dae Soo ; Kim, Jong Bin ; Park, Mi Ae ;
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 49, issue 4, 2013, Pages 449~458
DOI : 10.3796/KSFT.2013.49.4.449
This study investigated purplish Washington clam, Saxidomus purpuratus on its gonadal development, reproductive cycle and shell length (age) at 50% female group maturity from January to December 2011 in Jinhae Bay, Korea. This species is dioecious. The gonad index (GI) began to increase in January, reached the maximum value in May and to decrease in June, reached the minimum value in September then to increase slowly in October again. The reproductive cycle of the clams can be divided into five successive stages: the early active stage (Ea, from February to March), the late active stage (La, from January to March and October to December), the ripe stage (R, from January to May), the spawning stage (S, from June to December) and the degenerative and inactive stage (Ia, from January to February and November to December). The spawning periods were from June to December and the main spawning periods were from July to October. The shell length at 50% female group maturity (SL50) was estimated to be 63.6 mm, which can be converted as sexual maturity age of 2.2 year.

Park, Hee Won ; Choi, Kwang Ho ; Zhang, Chang Ik ; Seo, Young Il ; Kim, Heeyong ;
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 49, issue 4, 2013, Pages 459~468
DOI : 10.3796/KSFT.2013.49.4.459
In the application of the ecosystem-based fisheries assessment Jeonnam marine ranching ecosystem, two fisheries, funnel fishery and trap fishery, were selected as target fisheries. Black seabream, Acanthopagru schlegelii, rock bream, Sebastes inermis, gray mullet, Mugil cephalus, were selected as target species for the funnel fishery, and conger eel, Conger myriaster, was target species for the trap fishery. For assessing indicators of four management objectives, that is the maintenance of sustainability, biodiversity, habitat quality and socio-economic benefits, indicators were selected considering the availability of data, which were 5 indicators for sustainability, 3 indicators for biodiversity, 4 indicators for habitat, 2 indicators for socio-economic benefit. The Objective risk indices for sustainability and biodiversity of two fisheries were estimated at yellow zone, medium risk level. The objective risk indices for habitat and socio-economic benefit were estimated at green zone, safe level. The species risk indices (SRI) were estimated at yellow zone. The fishery risk indices (FRIs) were estimated at 1.143 and 1.400 for funnel net fishery and trap fishery, respectively. Finally the ecosystem risk index estimated at 1.184.

Park, Hee Won ; Zhang, Chang Ik ; Kwon, You Jung ; Seo, Young Il ; Oh, Taeg-Yun ;
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 49, issue 4, 2013, Pages 469~482
DOI : 10.3796/KSFT.2013.49.4.469
This study identified problems of the existing ecosystem-based fisheries assessment approach, and suggested new methods for scoring risk and for the estimation of fishery risk index. First, risk scores of zero to two for target and limit reference points for each indicator were replaced by those of zero to three, and the risk scores were calculated from new formulae which were developed in this study. Second, a new method for estimating fishery risk index (FRI) was developed in this study, considering the level of indicators. New method was applied to the Korean large purse seine fishery, large pair trawl fishery and drag net fishery. More precise and detailed risk scores were obtained from the new method, which can explain the risks by the wider range of both risk levels for 'better than target' and 'beyond limit'. The new method for estimating FRI could avoid the basic problem related with duplicated computations of fishery-level indicators, which improved the estimated FRI to be more accurate. Also, a method for estimating variance of FRI using the bootstrap was proposed in this study.

Yoon, Eun-A ; Hwang, Doo-Jin ;
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 49, issue 4, 2013, Pages 483~491
DOI : 10.3796/KSFT.2013.49.4.483
The sound-speed and density contrasts are important factors in estimating the target strength (TS) of moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita). In this study, the sound-speed and density contrasts were measured using time-of-flight and neutral buoyancy methods, respectively. The sound-speed contrast of A. aurita was from 0.9966 to 1.0031 (mean
) and no distinct differences in temperature or pulsation activity and weak were found. The density contrast was from 0.9994 to 1.0004 (mean
). The density of A. aurita was substantially different but the density contrast of A. aurita was shown to be similar to that in the sampling location. The results can be used to estimate of TS of A. aurita by acoustic model.

Lee, Jung-Kyu ; Koh, Sung Wi ;
Journal of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology , volume 49, issue 4, 2013, Pages 492~499
DOI : 10.3796/KSFT.2013.49.4.492
The characteristics of abrasive wear of the rubber matrix composites filled with nano sized silica particles were investigated at ambient temperature by pin-on-disc friction test. The range of volume fraction of silica particles tested are between 11% to 25%. The cumulative wear volume and friction coefficient of these materials on particle volume fraction were determined experimentally. The major failure mechanisms were lapping layers, deformation of matrix, ploughing, deboding of particles and microcracking by scanning electric microscopy photograph of the tested surface. The cumulative wear volume showed a tendency to increase nonlinear with increase of sliding distance. As increasing the silica particles of these composites indicated higher friction coefficient.
