Effect of Extraction Procedures on Chemical Composition and Physical Properties of Lycii Cortex

Some physical properties and chemical compositions of Lycii Cortex depending on the various extracting conditions were investigated for their changes during extraction with ethanol and water. Solid matter and contents of total sugar in water extracts were higher than those of ethanol extract. but contents of tannic acid in ethanol extracts was higher than that in water extracts. The methanol extract of the Lycii Cortex were fractionated with ethyl ether. ethyl acetate. n-butanol and water. The yield was higher in the order of water > n - butanol > ethyl ether and ethyl acetate fraction. Turbidity of water extraction was higher than that of ethanol extraction.
Effect of Fertilizers on Yield and Paeonol Content of Paeonia moutan Sims

This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of fertilizers on yield and paeonol content of Paeonia moutan Sims according to cultivation years. Tested variety was a local cultivar and fertilizer treatments used were compost (3, 000kg/10a), N-P-K (10-10-10kg/10a) fertilizer, fowl dropping manure (100kg/10a), organic fertilizer (200kg/10a) and non-fertilizer. Root yield increased by 12% in N-P-K fertilizer, 18% in compost, 22% in fowl dropping manure and 26% in organic fertilizer treatment compared with non-fertilizer. Increment rate of root yield according to cultivation years from 3 to 6 year cultivation was highest in 5 year cultivation. Paeonol content was highest of 3.08% at October harvest and 3.63% in the fowl dropping manure treatment. Paeonol content was higher at longer cultivation year, but increment rate of paeonol content per year was low from 3 year cultivation. Partial paeonol content of root increased in the order of lower part (3.07%), middle part (2.77%), and upper part (2.38%).
Characteristics of Seed Structure and Seedling Development in Polygonatum odoratum Druce

Solomon's seal (Polygonatum odoratum) seedlings raised through its seeds can replace the rhizomes impelling higher cost for transplanting, This experiment was done to determine the seed characteristics and the germinating processes to give some information on bulk production of seedlings using the seeds. The external or internal morphology of seeds or seedlings grown in lab. or greenhouse was examined mainly with stereomicroscope. The external shape of Solomon's seal seed was hard seed-coat and orthotropous ovule with linear type embryo stretching to the center of seed. Germination proceeded through the several steps. The lower part of seed embryo having the primordia of bulbil and roots first grew before the bulbil and roots was developed from the primordia. The lower part of embryo was enlarged toward the endosperm of seed as soon as seed germinated. Then epicotyl was formed on the apex of bulbil. The epicotyl was elongated after at least 6-week chilling treatment for breaking its dormancy and the first leaf shape was affected by light intensity given during seedling emergence. The bulbil was the first organ of the rhizome used as tea or herb medicine.
Growth Characteristics, Glycyrrhizin and Free Sugar Content of Licorice Species

This study was investigated to elucidate the growth characteristics and the contents of glycyrrhizin and free sugars of Glycyrrhiza plants, i. e. G. glabra var. glandulifera, G. uralensis, and G. pallidiflora. The growth of G. glabra var. glandulifera and G. pallidiflora was better in plots planted with stolon and stem over 2cm in diameter compared to that of below 1cm and
. G. glabra var. glandulifera didn't bloom in Suwon but produced stolon, while G. pallidiflora bloomed but did not produce stolon. Total root weight of six-year-old G. glabra var. glandulifera consisted of stolon (73.2%) and primary root (26. 8 %). The contents of glycyrrhizin and free sugars were highest in stolon, followed by tap root and leaf. The glycyrrhizin contents in Glycyrrhiza plants were 7.38% in G. glabra var. glandulifera, 5.29% in G. uralensis and 0. 15% in G. pallidiflora.
Changes in Essential Oil Contents of Acanthopanax senticosus Harms Grafted on Acanthopanax senticosus var. subinermis Harms

The present study was carried out to investigate the changes in essential oil contents as a part of searching the changes in active components in the graft cultivation of A. senticosus. To increase the yield of aerial parts and the contents of active components of Acanthopanax senticosus, scions of A. senticosus were grafted on different rootstocks. As a result, the contents of calarene,
and spathulenol increased, but cis-caryophyllene and epizonarene contents decreased.

were not detected in the leaves of grafted A. senticosus. Essential oils from stems did not differ with the methods of cultivation. Oil contents of 3-year-old plants were higher than those of 1-year-old plants, whereas

Effects of Seedling Ages on Growth and Yield of Cynanchum wilfordii

This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of direct seeding and planting of seedlings in different ages on yield and yield characteristics of Cynanchum wilfordii
. Emergence date was three days earlier in direct seeding compared to May 14 in plots planted with one - or three - year - old seedlings. Petiole length was 16cm and 26cm longer in direct seeding and 1 - year - old seedlings, respectively, compared to 279cm in plot of 3 - year - old seedling. Root diameter was 0.4cm thicker in direct seeding and 0.5cm thicker in 1 - year - old seedlings compared to 1.0cm in seedlings of three years old. Root length was 7.2cm shorter in direct seeding, but was 0.6cm longer in 1 - year - old seedlings than 32.2cm in seedlings of three years old. Effects of organic solvent fractions from perilla ethanol extract on alcohol metabolism in rats were examined and the results were as follows: Ethanol souble fraction, after a single oral administration to rats, was found to cause a significant decrease in the serum ethanol concentration as well as enhancement of liver cytosolic alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity. On the other hand, the fraction insouble in ethanol was found to increase ethanol concentration in the blood and inhibit ADH activity.
Effect of Organic Fertilizers on Growth and Yield of Achyranthes japonica N.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of several organic fertilizers on the growth and root yield of Achyranthes japonica N. from 1995 to 1996. Four organic fertilizers were applied: rice straw manure (RSM), fermented rice straw manure (FRSM), mixed oil cake manure (MOCM) and mighty soil manure (MSM). Organic matter, available phosphate,
, CaO, and MgO of soil increased in all plots with the addition of organic fertilizers, specifically with MOCM application. The highest contents of total nitrogen were 6.16% for MOCM and the available phosphate contents were very high in all of organic fertilizers except MSM. RSM and MSM with C/N ratios of 22.5, 17.7, respectively, were easily decomposed but C/N ratios of FRSM and MOCM, which were considered as irresolvable organic fertilizers, were 40.9 and 8.4, respectively. FRSM and MOCM applications increased emergence rate and improved the growth characters of shoot and root parts of plants compared to those of N - P - K fertilization. The highest dry root yield resulted from FRSM 20% and MOCM 26% treatment. There were significantly positive correlations between the growth characters of shoot, root parts of plants and dry root yield in A. japonica grown under organic fertilizer applications.
Effect of Planting Density on the Growth Characteristics and Root Yield of Achyranthes japonica N.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of planting density on the growth characteristics and root yield of Achyranthes japonica N. from 1995 to 1996. Stem diameter, no. of branch and fresh weight of above-ground parts per plant were reduced by increasing the planting density, but stem length, length and diameter of main root increased at high density,

Growth and Flowering Characteristics of Polygonatum spp.

The Polygonatum spp. used in this study was collected from 1994 to 1997, and planted by species in Hamyang medicinal plant experimental station field.
species of Polygonatum spp. have been known to be distributed in the northern hemisphere, and
species in Korea. In this study, collected seven species of Polygonatum spp. were investigated. Plant height was highest in Polygonatum stenophyllum followed by P. falcatum, P. humile, P. lasianthum var. coreanum.. Leaf length was longest in P. falcatum and shortest in P. odoratum and leaf width was the most wide in P. odoratum var. pluriflorum. P. stenophyllum had 111 flowers per stem. The other species had
flowers per stem. The ratio of flower setting in each species was high at two but was 95.2% at above four in P. stenophyllum. The number of fruits was 14.8, 15.4 and 17.7 in P. odoratum, P. falcatum and P. humile, respectively. Other species did not produce fruit. Fruit setting percentage was high in P. odoratum as 81.5%. The number of branched rhizome doubled every year.
Changes of Crude Components and Essential Oil Content by Shading Treatment in Codonopsis lanceolata Trautv

This experiment was conducted to increase essential oil and aromatic contents on roots of Codonopsis lanceolata Trautv with different shading treatments. Vine length was prolonged by shading treatment compared with non-shading. Fresh root weight in 75% shading treatment was highest with 13g per plant. Crude components such as crude protein, fat and fiber contents decreased, while crude ash increased as shading degree increased. Forty-eight volatile aromatic compounds in the root were identified by GC/MS. Major aromatic compounds were 1-hexanol, cis-3-hexanol, and trans-2-hexanol. In particular, trans-2-hexanol was highest in the 75% shading treatment attaining the 160.32 % area. Conclusively, it was suggested that the 75% shading treatment was to some extent effective to improve the content of essential oil and aromatics in the roots of Codonopsis lanceolata Trautv.
Effects of Plant Age and Seed Specific Gravity on Seed Germination of Bupleurum falcatum L.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of plant age on germination and distribution of seed specific gravity and to find a reason of low germination rate in seeds harvested from young plants, which could be valuable information for the improvement of seed germination in Bupleurum falcatum L. The germination rates of Korean native cultivar were 35% and 4% higher in 1-year-and 2-year-old plants, respectively, than Misshimasaiko (三鳥柴胡) and showed no significant difference between 1- and 2-year-old plants. However, in Misshimasaiko, seed germination rates of 1-year-old plants were
lower than those of
plants. The relative frequency of seeds over 1.00 specific gravity in Misshimasaiko was
plants compared to 52% of 1-year-old plant, but no difference was found between plant ages in Korean native cultivar. Considering varietal difference, the germination rate of seeds with the same specific gravity was not affected by plant age in Korean native cultivar, but in Misshimasaiko it was greatly different between 1-year-old
. From these results, it was assumed that differences in germination rate among seeds from different plant ages were caused not only by seed specific gravity but also by some other factors.
Seedling Quality and Bolting Response by Seeding Time in Angelica gigas Nakai

Angelica gigas has been a major medicinal crop in Korea for a long time. This study was to determine optimum seeding time and bolting response by shifting seeding time between November 10, 1993, and August 10, 1994 using promising line, Suwon 2. Days to emergence were similar among seeding times from April 10 to August 10 in Suwon. Seedling duration was shortened 92 days when seeded on July 10 compared with the conventional seeding time of April 10. Productivity of seedling ranging from 0.31 to 0.70cm in diameter was highest of 730 plants per
in July 10 seeding. When seeded in July 10, bolting rate was 2.4 percent as compared with 2.6 percent in conventional seeding (April 10). The optimum seeding time was July 10. Seedling quality, survival rate after planting in field, and root yield were greatly influenced by seeding time.
