A Study on the Lung Nodule Detection in Digital Radiographic Images

An automatic lung nodule detection algorithm was applied for digital radiographic images using Bit Slice Processor. In this algorithm, signal enhancing filtering and signal suppressing filtering were performed on the given digital chest image, respectively. Then we grit the dirt- frrence image from these filtered images, and hi-level island images were obtained by applying various threshold values. From the island images, we decided the suspicious nodules using size and circularity test, and marked them to alert radiologists. The performance of the atgorithm was analyzed with respect to the size, contrast and position of digitally synthesized nodules. This method presented 45.8% of true positive ratio for the nodules of lOw in diameter with 12-16 pixel value differnces.
The Characteristics of Muscle Fatigue of EMG Signal Using the AR Model

This paper describes the AR model of EMG signal during maximum voluntary contraction. By comparing the AR coefficients and the reflection coefficients of the AR model with the median frequency of power spectrum, it is proved that muscle fatigue can be measured by the AR and the reflection coefficients. In the estimation procedure of AR model parameter, the autocorrelation method is superior to the covariance method, and it is determined that the optimal order is six. As the muscle becomes fatigue, the median frequency of power spectrum is declined, and the AR coefficient [
] and the reflection coefficient [
] are also decreased. Therefore the muscle fatigue can be measured by the AR parameter.
A Study of the Atrial Arrhythmia Diagnosis Algorithm

This papaer presents a new algorithm for the P-wave detection in the ECG signal. Digital differentiation method (7-point derivative) is used for detecting P-waves exactly. This algorithm can detect various parameters of PR, PP, RR interval, which are important to diagnosis AV blocks and WPW syndrome. Especially, this algorithm can detect P-waves very efficiently not only in well-preprocessed waves but in pccr waves with noise and artifact. And it enables to develope more reliable automatic diagnosis algorithm.
Development of Rheoencephalograph(I)

In this study, Rheoencephalography( REG ) was designed and constructed. Using the cons- tructed instrument cerebral blood flow(CBF) of left and right brain, CBF change by posture, and reproducibility were studied. Followings are important results. Relative CBF could be measured noninvasively and continuously. Since reproducibility of the constructed REG was found to be quite high (4%), the accuracy of the instrument itself was proved. REG can be easily applied for testing the effect of drugs for the patients with cerebral vessel diseases since it is quite sensitive to the relative changes of CBF. Various cerebral diseases can be diagnosed by analyzing the REG waveforms. The area of restricted cerebral blood vessels can be located by arranging the electrode configuration. Comparative studies with the standard techinques of measuring CBF are needed to verify the accuracy of REG. Further studies on optimal electrode configuration and various artifacts are also necessary.
A Study on A New Two-Dimensional Pulsed Doppler System Using Second-Order Sampling Method.

The doppler effect is used for measuring the velocity of the blood flow in artery. Because of the range information, the pulsed doppler system is most commonly used. In this paper, we propose a new two-dimensional(2-D) pulsed Doppler system. Which uses second-order sampling method and serial processing. The proposed system using second-order sampling method eliminates in-phase, quadrature-phase balancing problem at demodulator of quadrature detection method. In addition, the new pulsed 2-D doppler system eliminates balancing problem of channels of 2-D doppler system because of serial processing.
Polymer Surfaces for Cell Adhesion I. Surface Modification of Polymers and ESCA Analysis

We modified polymer surfaces, polyethylene, polystyrene and polyester, to improve cellcompatibility. For surface modification of the polymers, we used various surface treatment methods; physicochemical oxidation methods such as plasma discharge, corona discharge, sulfuric acid and chloric acid treatments, and biological methods such as adsorption of plasma protein and fibronectin onto the polymer surfaces. The treated polymer surfaces were characterized by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis ( ESCA ). The physicochemically treated polymers showed different surface chemical structures depending on the treated methods. The sulfuric acid-treated surfaces showed greater carboxyl groups than those of plasma- or corona- treated surfaces, while the chloric acid-treated one showed high density of hydroxyl group on the surface. By the biological treatments, the surfaces were uniformly coated with proteins. The fibronectin adsorbed on the surface seems to have unique properties for cell binding.

Dissolution properties of Chitin or Chitosan Microsphere Containing p-Aminosalicylic Acid

The Applicability of chitin or chitosan microsphere as means to achieve sustained release of p-aminosalicylic acid(PAS) has been examined. The microsphere of chitin or chitosan containing PAS were prepared by coacervation in acidic aqueous system in range of pH 2.0-4.0. The dissolution test of PAS from polymeric drug system was carried out in vitro test. The dissolution rate of PAS from the microsphere with chitin was significanthly lower than that from the microsphere with chitosan.The dissolution rate of PAS from the microsphere was decreased with increasing of concentration of chitin and chitosan. The sustained release of PAS from the microsphere was more effective at pH 1.2 than pH 6.8.
