Effect of Ultrafiltration on the Clearance of Artificial Kidney Dialyzers

Solute transfer in artificial kidney dialyzers was analyzed using Kedem-Katcha- Isky's description on membrane transport. Mass transfer coefficient, K was deduced from the diffusive clearance of commercial hemodialyzers. It can to seen that Kd increases with the increase of blood flow rate, which means that there is substantial resistance in the blood phase for solute transport. Total clearance was estimated with the Werynski's formula. The increase in total clearance due to ultrafiltration was most significant for middle molecules like vitamin Bla, however that for smaller molecules such as urea and creatinine was minimal.
Estimation of Urea and Vitamin B12 Concentrations in the Body using Two Compartment Model

Removal of urea and vitamin B12 was simulated using two pool models with closed loop dialysis, open loop dialysis, and hemodiafiltrations with predilution and postdilulion. It was found that urea removal was limited by dialyzer clearance, however B12 removal was limited both by the resistance between ECF and ICF and by dialyzer clearance. Open loop dialysis was better than closed loop dialysis in terms of dialysate requirement and removal efficiency. Residual renal function plays an important role in removing vitamin B12. Dialysis frequency more than twice/wide does not have great effect on removal efficiency, but has the effect of reducing the difference between maximum and minimum cancentrations during dialysis period.

A Design of Heart Rate Feedback Controller for the Regimen of Physical Activity of the Patient with Coronary Artery Disease

The regimen of physical activity of the patient with coronary artery disease requires that he should not overshoot the prescribed heart rate based on his age, health and fuctional status of the heart during his exercise. The step input of work load, however, involves a great danger of overshooting. The purpose of this study was to desigil a system that makes it passible for a subject to check the overshooting. This system shows on tile H.R-meter, the amplified and filtered heart-rate signal of the subject received by the photosensor on his earlobe, puts it in the lead coinpensational circuit where it is conpared with the reference input signal(=the presfribed heart rate). The output of the lead compensational circuit works the aull meter. By means of this null meter, the subject knows whether he is overshooting the prescribed heart rate or not. He can continue the natl meter needle at the'Zero'position through the control of the speed of pedaling of the bicycle ergometer, An experimental test, made on eight men and four women in healthy condition, showed that 91. 7% of them vlaintained the stable heart rate and that the overshooting of the desired heart rate did not exceed
2BPM. According to the result of this experiment, since the heart rate feedback controller makes it possible for the subject to take the prescribed exercise based not on the work load but on the heart rate which incidentally is inexpensive, it can be made use of as the instrument for the regimen of pflysical activity by the patient with coronary artery disease.

A Recursive Restoration Scheme of B-Scan Ultrasonographic Images in Noisy Case

The objective of this phantom study is to develop a digital method for improving the lateral resolution of B-scan ultrasonographic images irs medical application of ultrasound. By utilizing a discrete state-space modeling approach and Kalman-Buch method for analysis of the transducer's beam profile and the measurement and sampling noise, a stable recursive restoration of the object image was obtained for improved lateral resolution. The point spread function (PSF) was measured for the reflective signals after scanning the small pins located along the depth of interest. One major advantage of the present recursive scheme over the transform method is in its applicability for the space-variant imaging, such as in the case of the rotational movement of transducer.

Ventricular assist device(VAD) has been clinically applied as a temporary circulatory sup- porting system in the patients with severe heart failure, but small sized VAD for infant is not available. The purpose of this paper is to introduce small sized VAD and presents the result of in vitro test. Sejong VAD is diaphragmatic type of pneumatic pump and stroke volume is 11cc. Cardiac outputs of the Sejong VAD were measured by overflow tank under variable conditions of driving parameters. The cardiac output was 1.3 1/min at the heart rate of 120 per minute, left atrial pressure of 15cmH2O, percent systole of 43%, driving pressure of 240 mmHg, vacuum pressure of -40 mmHg, and mean aortic pressure of 70 mmHg. No mechanical problem was developed during the continuous in vitro test for 3 months.

In this paper, the information capacity, the intergrate performance measure of digital radiography system has been quantitatively analyzed. The effect of various factors affecting the information capacity of the digital radiography system in multi-stage detection processes has been considered and analyzed in detail. The results show that the more information capacity can be obtained with the smaller detector cell area, despite of the reduced signal to noise ratio due to the reduced number of X-ray photons per detector cell. Considering the limit of human visual acuity. however, the sufficient resolution will be obtained when the detector cell size in 0.2
0.2mm with 8 bit quantizaion. And also the results indicates that the information capacity may be severely reduced by the mixture of electric noise in final read-out stage.

As the computerized methods and equipments in nuclear medicine imaging increases, quantitative information is needed on the single photon emission computed tomographic images as well as on the conventional nuclear medicine images. In this paper, the authors investigated the effect of several clinician - friendly reconstrution filters on the resultant transverse slices of backprojected profiles of radioisotope distribution from the quantitative point of view, and reduced the filter Parameters such as cutoff frequency and order of filter which are necessary to minimize the quantification error using computer -generated phantoms.

In this paper, a method for camera position estimation in gaster using elechoendoscopic image sequence is proposed. In order to obtain proper image sequences, the gaster in divided into three sections. It is presented that camera position modeling for 3D information extraction and image distortion due to the endoscopic lenses is corrected.The feature points are represented with respect to the reference coordinate system belpw 10 percents error rate. The faster distortion correction algorithm is proposed in this paper. This algorithm uses error table which is faster than coordinate transform method using n-th order polynomials.
