Fashion & Textile Research Journal, volume 6, issue 4, 2004, Pages 415~420
The market demand for knitwear has been increased both domestically and in export. Despite of the high and consistent demand, knitwear design has been rather simple and tends to show mainly foreign influences. In order to compete efficiently in the world market and to provide more variety, knitwear design originated from our cultural background needs to be developed. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop various knitwear design adopting the Korean traditional 'Danchung' motifs and the main colors used in the motifs. Three knitwear works were designed and constructed, which included a round pullover, a half-sleeve V-neck one-piece dress, and an evening dress. The mainly used motifs consisted of natural motifs such as lotus, cloud, and motifs symbolizing good luck such as 壽 and 囍. The Original 'Dan-chung' motifs were stylized into different forms and colors, and this design work was done using CAD system including the 'Adobe Illustrator 9.0' and the '4D box Hi-Knit Program'. Based on the designed images created by the CAD system, an actual design works were knitted using different weft knit methods including a hand knitting machine and weft knit machine of the knitwear manufacturers. This study provided the possibility of knitwear design originated from the Korean traditional culture.
The Development of Textile Design and The Manufacture of Cultural Merchandise by Using Lotus Flower Patterns(II)
Jung, Jin-Soun ;
Fashion & Textile Research Journal, volume 6, issue 4, 2004, Pages 421~426
In an information-oriented and internationalized society of the future, the quality and the price of goods made by each country will be equalized. That eliminates competition. But the design and appearance of products is an important factor in international competition. Indeed, design symbolizes a country's culture visually, and it can show the cultural identity and originality of a nation in international society. And that will play an important part that can contribute to creating added value. It is necessary to revive our people's old lyrical stories which are far away from our memory, and we badly need design development to revive traditional cultural merchandise through visual modernization. In this study, I chose lotus as the subject material of textile design development. And my intention for this study is to reflect Korean traditional cultural value as much as I can, and to develop textile design of Korean images by adding modern scenes. Also, I intend to print them on fabric, and apply them to cultural merchandise including scarves and ties, by using digital textile printing systems. The reasons for doing so, are to create high added value, and to let other peoples of the world, know about our excellent culture.

Lee, Su-Jeong ; Chae, Seon-Mee ;
Fashion & Textile Research Journal, volume 6, issue 4, 2004, Pages 433~439
Hanji costumes has four aspects that allow the creator or artist to create many variations. The pictorial effects of Hanji costumes are produced through variations in the dyes and brushes used for its application. The amount of water and texture of the Hanji mixture also influences the Hanji clothing. This effect was expressed using a dry brush technique, a dripping technique, India inks, and fragments from other Hanji works. A second aspect of Hanji clothing is the coloring effect in the Hanji costumes. The coloring is due to the fibers in the preparation mixture and the uniqueness of the dyes. The Hanji clothing was dyed various colors and patterns by dip dyeing, block dyeing, silk screens, digital printing. The third aspect of Hanji imagination in clothing is the decorative details. The details in Hanji clothing can be seen using frills, pleats, tucks and ribbons. The last variation of Hanji clothing can be expressed through crafting techniques. These techniques are the quality of paper string, cuts in the paper and paste ingredients. With Hanji cloth, it is possible to plait, roll, and crample into other flexible & useful materials.

Lim, Ji-Young ;
Fashion & Textile Research Journal, volume 6, issue 4, 2004, Pages 455~460
This study was performed to analyze the wearing practice and the purchasing characteristics of brassieres in order to offer basic data to produce superior brassiere and to improve the wearing comfort. The questionnaire were 146 Korean college female students. For data analysis, descriptive analysis, crosstabs, factor analysis and one-way ANOVA were used. The results were as follows, first, most subjects didn't know the sizing system of brassiere and their own breast size. So the degree of satisfaction of wearing brassiere was low than subjects who knew their own breast size. And they replied that the most unsatisfaction factor was brassiere size. Second, when subjects decided to purchase a brassiere they considered size, design, color, cost, fabric and brand and so on. Among them size and design were considered the most important. Third, the subjects who wear brassiere all day long, they considered wearing comfort and cost rather than design and collar. Therefore, the markets with brassieres would be able to segmented based on consumers' characteristics. Firth, the subjects were dissatisified at size, the taking off wire and shape modification after washing. And they requested the development of various size, fabric and cost improvement and fittness of brassieres. These results imply that to improve the wearing comfort of brassiere, it is so important to produce and develop various types of size first of all. And consumers should know size system of brassiere and their own breast size.

The purpose of this study was to suggest the standard sizing system and grading rules according to body types of elderly women. The data were the anthropometric measurements of 329 women aged 60 and older measured in 2001. To determine the effective and useful clothing sizing system, the distribution of hip girth and bust girth of 3 body types which were suggested in KS K 0055 was analyzed, and the significant difference among adjoining hip girth ranges was analyzed, too. And the sizes of major body parts that were used for manufacturing clothing were made to have regular interval between each clothing sizes. From this study, we certified that each different sizing system for 3 body types to manufacture more suitable clothing for elderly women was necessary and suggested the standard size for each body type. And we also suggested the patternmaking sizes that were needed to manufacture ready-made clothing. On the basis of standard size, we suggested the grading rules for 3 body types. And we verified the propriety of the grading rules for 3 body types through the fitting test, and we knew that the grading rules for 3 body types of this study was very useful to manufacture clothing for elderly women.

Park, Ji-Eun ; Kim, Hee-Eun ;
Fashion & Textile Research Journal, volume 6, issue 4, 2004, Pages 485~491
The purpose of this study is to analyze the wearing fitness of middle aged women's jacket with non-Stretchable Fabric and stretchable fabric. We surveyed the size of jackets and process of pattern making with stretchable fabric in companies which produce the clothing mainly for middle aged women. Based upon the result of process of pattern making, two kind of experimental jacket with non-stretchable and stretchable fabric were made. We measured space length between body and garment using 3D scanner and analyzed the clothing pressure 7 parts of body with 3 kinds of arm raising. The result were as follows : 1. Most parts of space length except bust were higher in non-stretchable jacket than in stretchable jacket. 2. Clothing pressure showed greater value with non-stretchable fabric jacket than with stretchable fabric jacket. Clothing pressure in upper arm point areas increased as the angle of the arm raising increased. Therefore, the sleeve width and armhole depth should he considered when the amount of wearing ease were reduced in jacket with stretchable fabric.

A Study on the Effects of Electromagnetic Wave on Human Body - The Variation of Electroencephalogram by Blocking Electromagnetic Wave Materials and Aural Stimuli -
Lee, Su-Jeong ; Lee, Tae-Il ;
Fashion & Textile Research Journal, volume 6, issue 4, 2004, Pages 503~510
The study is one of fundamental researches for the development of future smart clothing and textile products with blocking properties from electromagnetic waves by analyzing human physical symptoms in using electromagnetic products in such an environments. Among various textiles in the experiment, nano silver has shown the best blocking performance from electromagnetic waves, which decreases depending on the distance. The power spectrum distribution and the incidence of electroencephalogram between blocking materials and aural stimuli has shown that,
, wave appeared to be active in all channels except for
, whereas all waves appeared with processed materials and especially with nano silver silk(NSS),
waves appeared active in all regions. As for the brain mapping of
wave according to time, there found a strong activity in
of the parietal lobe, with all materials on all time regions. With silk nylon metal(SNM) and NSS, it appeared strong in
as well. As for
, wave, the activity appeared strong in frontal lobe before 7min. 30sec, where it tends to diminish abruptly in 7min. 30sec. to 13min. 30sec. region. After 13min., it regained gradually. With NSS, it appeared strong in all areas except for the farthest
. The appearance of
wave can be deduced as it can affect human body with its toxic property while the silver particles become nano-sized. Therefore, the study conducted with human participants requires a proper particle size of it which would not penetrate cellular tissues and a proper binder and binding treatment for it, to prevent the physical fatigues and the potential diseases. However, it is highly required for back-up researches to verify various aspects in applying nano silver to textile products.
A Study on the Bleaching Properties of Silk Fabric Using Vapor Type Ozone Treatment
Kim, Jung-Min ; Lee, Mun-Soo ;
Fashion & Textile Research Journal, volume 6, issue 4, 2004, Pages 511~514
We studied on the bleaching properties of silk fabric by vapor type ozone processing using ozone's strong oxidation instead of 28%
chemical treatment. When vapor type ozone processing was directly treated to fabrics retaining water to 50~70% pick up ratio, high concentration ozone was generated 14,000ppm(168 mg/h) approximately and finally its bleaching improved. The fabric's bleaching effect was improved because vapor type ozone generated the highest decomposition to oxidation of surface and inter molecules. The experiment revealed that fabric's bleaching was improved by change of the pick-up ratio of vapor type ozone processing. However, tensile strength and elongation were reduced by increase of time, and the time that was assumed as the most optimized time to minimize the reduction of fabric's tensile strength and elongation as well as maximizing the fabric's bleaching was 30 minutes.

Kim, Hee-Eun ; Kim, Seong-Suk ;
Fashion & Textile Research Journal, volume 6, issue 4, 2004, Pages 515~521
The Purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of body fat on thermophysiological responses and subjective sensations under hot environment. Fifteen female college students volunteered as subjects. Subjects were organized into three groups - low body fat group(L group : less than 20% of body fat), medium body fat group(M group : 20%~30% of body fat) and high body fat group(H group : More than 30% of Body fat). The experiment was carried out in a climate chamber of
, 60%RH with the repeat of having 'Exercise' and 'Rest' period. The results of this study are as follows ; Rectal temperature maintained higher in M group and L group than in H group in the period of exercise 1. High body fat was so effective in keeping the core temperature, it seems that as was usually the case in cold environment. The mean skin temperature was the lowest value in H group but the ratio of mean skin temperature change was clearly high value in H group. The above facts indicated that thermophysiological response occurs rapidly in H group. Blood pressure, pulse rate and metabolic rate of H group showed the highest values and those of L group showed the lowest value in all period of experiment. Effective of sweating rate was higher in H group than other groups. In subjective sensations, The H group felt more pleasant and comfortable than M group. With these results in mind, people of H group responses more actively for thermal regulation in a hot environment, and these leads H group to feel more pleasant and comfortable.
