Numerical Simulation of a 100
-scale Wall-fired Boiler for Demonstration of Oxy-coal Combustion

As one of the main technologies for carbon capture and storage in power generation, oxy-coal combustion is being developed for field demonstration in Korea. This study presents the results of numerical simulation for combustion in a single-wall-fired 100
-scale boiler proposed for the initial design of the demonstration plant. Using a commercial CFD code, the detailed combustion, flow and heat transfer characteristics were assessed both for air-mode and oxy-mode combustion. The results show that stable combustion can be achieved in the dual mode operation with the current boiler configuration. However, the differences in the flow pattern and heat transfer between the two combustion modes need to be considered in the design and operation which is mainly due to the larger density and specific heat of
. Further development of the boiler design is required using improved numerical modeling for radiative heat transfer and combustion.
A Numerical Study of Combustion Characteristics for HCCI Engine with Detailed Diesel Surrogate Chemical Mechanism

Homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) is the best concept able to provide low NOx and PM in diesel engine emissions. This new alternative combustion process is mainly controlled by chemical kinetics in comparison with the conventional combustion in internal combustion engine. In this paper, combustion characteristics of HCCI engine with suggested diesel surrogate(heptane/toluene mixture fuel) reaction mechanism were numerically investigated by heptane/toluene mixture ratio and EGR ratio. As results, the ignition timing became faster with increasing of heptane, and an initial oxidation and the ignition timing of the mixture fuel were affected by heptane and toluene, respectively.
Skeletal Chemical Mechanisms for a Diesel Fuel Surrogate by the Directed Relation Graph(DRG)

It is a challenging task to apply large detailed chemical mechanisms of fuel oxidation in simulation of complex combustion phenomena. There exist a few systematic methodologies to reduce detailed chemical mechanisms to smaller sizes involving less computational load. This research work concerns generation of a skeletal chemical mechanism by a directed relation graph with specified accuracy requirement. Two sequential stages for mechanism reduction are followed in a perfectly stirred reactor(PSR) for high temperature chemistry and to consider the autoignition delay time for low and high temperature chemistry. Reduction was performed for the detailed chemical mechanism of n-heptane consisting of 561 species and 2539 elementary reaction steps. Validation results show acceptable agreement for the autoignition delay time and the PSR calculation in wide parametric ranges of pressure, temperature and equivalence ratio.
Laminar Burning Velocities and Flame Stability Analysis of Hydrocarbon/Hydrogen/Carbon Monoxide-air Premixed Flames

To investigate cell formation in hydrocarbon/hydrogen/carbon monoxide-air premixed flames, the outward propagation and cellular instabilities were experimentally studied in a constant pressure combustion chamber at room temperature and elevated pressures. Unstretched laminar burning velocities and Markstein lengths of the mixtures were obtained by analyzing high-speed schlieren images. In this study, hydrodynamic and diffusional- thermal instabilities were evaluated to examine their effects on flame instabilities. The experimentally-measured unstretched laminar burning velocities were compared to numerical predictions using the PREMIX code. Effective Lewis numbers of premixed flames with methane addition decreased for all of the cases; meanwhile, effective Lewis numbers with propane addition increased for lean and stoichiometric conditions and increased for rich and stoichiometric cases for hydrogen-enriched flames. With the addition of propane, the propensity for cell formation significantly was diminished, whereas cellular instabilities for hydrogen-enriched flames were promoted. However, similar behavior of cellularity was obtained with the addition of methane to the reactant mixtures.
The Experimental Study of Heat Generation Efficiency of Magnetic Hyperthermia System

We demonstrated heat generation efficiency of the magnetic hyperthermia system to find optimal condition using gelatin tissue phantom. Magnetic hyperthermia induction can be used to make heat generation with different concentration of
iron oxide inside tissue phantom and magnetically labeled cells by applying AC magntic field at a frequency of 145 kHz. It was observed that the maximum temperature achieved in the magnetic gelatin tissue phantom increased with the concentration of
iron oxide and alternating magnetic field intensity. Results were discussed with respect to further optimization of therapeutic technique for biomedical application with modified functional nanoparticles.
Numerical Investigation on the Thermal and Flow Characteristics of Combustion Heater for Commercial Vehicle

The diesel pre-heater has being used in cabin heating and coolant heating of engine to reduce the engine warm up time for commercial vehicle. The pre-heaters are classified as diesel spray combustor and it forms diffusion flame. By using swirler, a recirculation flow of hot product gases is established near the fuel nozzle and it helps the maintaining of diffusion flame. The design difference of swirler can affect on reaction characteristics and temperature distribution inside pre-heater. The purpose of this study is the investigation of the effect of swirler configuration on combustion characteristics. To solve spray combustion problem, the Euler-Lagrange approach discrete model is used to track droplet trajectory and evaporation history. The PDF equilibrium model is used for chemical reaction model. These models are implemented into the FLUENT code.
