Development and Comparison of Centralized and Decentralized ATIS Models with Simulation Method
Kim, Hoe-Kyoung ;
The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 2, 2011, Pages 1~8
Traffic congestion is a source of significant economic and social costs in urban areas. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are a promising means to help alleviate congestion by utilizing advanced sensing, computing, and communication technologies. This paper proposes and investigates a basic and advanced ITS framework Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) using wireless Vehicle to Roadside (Centralized ATIS model: CA model) and Vehicle to Vehicle (DeCentralized ATIS model: DCA model) communication and assuming an ideal communication environment in the typical
urban grid traffic network. Results of this study indicate that an ATIS using wireless communication can save travel time given varying combinations of system characteristics: traffic flow, communication radio range, and penetration ratio. Also, all tested metrics of the CA and DCA models indicate that the system performance of both models is almost identical regardless of varying traffic demand and penetration ratios. Therefore, DCA model can be a reasonable alternative to the fixed infrastructure based ATIS model (CA model).

The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 2, 2011, Pages 9~21
The ramp metering strategy is one of the effective ways to solve the freeway traffic congestion in peak time periods. The study was initiated with assurance that the traffic conditions of ramp and mainline that mitigate the congestion would exist. Under the moderate traffic volume levels, ramp metering is expected to improve the quality of freeway operation. To derive a range of traffic condition, three operation strategies(Do nothing, ramp metering, minimum ramp control) were set up and the ALINEA algorithm was implemented with microscopic traffic simulator "VISSIM". The volumes of mainline and ramp are key parameters for the simulation scenarios. Measures of effectiveness for the study include mainline density and average vehicle speed. Operation boundaries in terms of traffic volume were proposed for operating ramp metering strategy. The results show that under the proposed traffic conditions the ramp metering was more successful to increase average vehicle speeds. Traffic controls under the operation boundaries of traffic levels give significant effects for density and average vehicle speed. The outcomes of this study would be useful to improve the performance of ramp metering strategies.

The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 2, 2011, Pages 22~34
This paper presents the investigation results of a research on how engineers can analyze the economic effect of the ETCS(Electronic Toll Collection System) installed to minimize the vehicle delays on freeway tollgates during toll payments. This research considered this economic effect to occur in the form of vehicle passing time reductions at the ETCS, and the multi-service queuing theory was applied to estimate these values. This research found: 1) When vehicles approaching tollgates show Poisson distribution and the service time of the ETCS shows Exponential distribution, the multi-service queuing theory would be applicable for estimating vehicle passing times at toll-gates, 2) Despite the ETCS placement, exit sections of tollgates give a greater reduction of vehicle passing times than entering sections due to more delays at conventional toll payments, and 3)The ETCS would not guarantee vehicle passing time reductions all the time, because in such a case as many vehicles were queuing at the ETCS, the total delay level for a toll gate would increase greatly. In addition, in order to examine the accuracy of the estimated vehicle passing values, this research compared the values from the multi-service queuing theory with the observed values from a set of field survey values at freeway toll-gates, and found that the two values were in a good agreement with a very low error range of 1-3 seconds per vehicle. Based on this result, the multi-service queuing theory was recommended for practice.

The national police agency has executed the project for the advancement of traffic control and operation systems in order to mitigate chronic traffic problems and to meet the global standards regarding the traffic control and operation systems. This study effort was initiated to evaluate the effects of various policies proposed for the advancement of traffic control and operation systems. The evaluation results indicated that the policies proposed for the advancement of traffic control and operation systems showed apparent and positive effects in terms of transportation mobility and safety. However, there have been many difficulties to overcome in order to settle down the policies proposed for the advancement of traffic control and operation systems as smooth as possible. For example, the violation of intersection passing method has been increased after the implementation of the advancement of traffic control and operation systems in majority of evaluation sites. In addition, lacks of awareness as well as improper operations of the advancement of traffic control and operation systems have caused drivers' confusions, which generated more traffic congestion and risks. Currently, the policies for the advancement of traffic control and operation systems focused on the improvements of traffic signal operations, including leading through movements and permissive left-turns. However, synergy effects may be expected if all of the policies including the improvements of traffic signal operations are executed together.

The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 2, 2011, Pages 42~54
This study presented an algorithm to detect zigzag driving maneuver that is highly associated with vehicle crash occurrence. In general, the zigzag driving results from the driver's inattention including drowsy driving and driving while intoxicated. Therefore, the technology to detect such unsafe driving maneuver will provide us with a valuable opportunity to prevent crash in the road. The proposed detection algorithm used angular velocity data obtained from a gyro sensor. Performance evaluations of the algorithm presented promising results for the actual implementation in practice. The outcome of this study can be used as novel information contents under the ubiquitous transportation systems environment.

The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 2, 2011, Pages 55~65
The city of Suwon has introduced various ITS services between 2001 and 2006 as an alternative to solve chronic traffic congestion in the city. After the successful implementation, there was an effort to evaluate effects from the ITS deployments. However, the effects caused from ITS implementations may be realized in many different ways. Therefore, this research effort was aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of ITS implements through the first and second phases in Suwon using reasonable and scientific methods. Based on results from the analysis of variables presenting traffic condition, surveys and economic evaluation, the implementation of ITS services in Suwon can be concluded successful. However, there is a need for efforts to maintain the effects produced from the successful introduction of ITS services through continuous upgrading the systems, intensive maintenance, and efficient operations.
Casual Analysis on the Relationship between Information Usage and Excursion Behavior toward Planning Sightseeing ITS
Kim, Hyun ;
The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 2, 2011, Pages 66~76
The Sightseeing ITS is defined as a system that gives tourists and inhabitants the information concerned with road network conditions, parking, sightseeing spots, and travel time in the relevant area. When focusing on tourists' excursion behaviors in sightseeing areas, however, it is sometimes found that they feel much annoyed with insufficient information about the area. While they also have a variety of needs to get information and make a decision about their excursions, it becomes one of important subjects to understand the actual circumstances of their information usage and to identify the causal relationship between their excursion patterns and the obtained information. This paper aims to investigate basic issues toward development of Sightseeing ITS and to modify an analytical model of tourist's excursion behavior considering information usage at Fuji five lakes Area, which is a representative sightseeing place in Japan. The relationship was analyzed using a structural equation model: information usage at the scheduling stage has an impact on tourists' individual cognition of the sightseeing area, tourists' individual cognition affects information usage at the excursion stage, and information usage at the excursion stage affects behavior during excursions. It is found that tourists' decision making behaviors on their excursion tend to depend on the information usage. This implies essential results to construct effective and customer oriented ITS.

The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 2, 2011, Pages 77~83
In this paper, we present the design procedure of the synchronizer and the demodulator of a 13.56MHz RFID PJM tag, which was standardized in ISO 18000-3 mode 3. We optimize the algorithms in order to minimize the number of registers and implement them based on international standard. The designed module is simulated by Modelsim and FPGA. The synchronizer is composed of 3 correlators that is implemented by 1,024(16bit
64cycle) registers. The demodulator is composed of 2 correlators that is implemented by 128(2bit
64cycle) registers. The simulation performed with the demodulator integrated with the synchronizer shows that it works at about 87% success rate with the test data of SNR -2dB and 100% with those of SNR 4dB.

The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 2, 2011, Pages 84~93
In order to provide the real time and proper information to the pedestrian who is using the transport connection and transfer center through data collecting and processing process, the design of the test-bed (Gimpo airport)'s communication construction and the technology of the pedestrian location tracking has been researched. The design of the communication construction should make sure that it can provide believable data to the user of the transfer center. At the same time, the location tracking should also be considered, so that the require of the communication efficiency and the location tracking efficiency can be met together. In order to make the efficient location tracking technology, the problems related to the commercial technology based real time location identification will be resolved and the new approach method was proposed and be applied and analysed to the test-bed. The wireless access points can be located in the most real-world situation which has added the characteristics of the real building to the electronic map, and through the analysis of theirs location, they can be set as the mainly necessary points for the communication construction design and the location tracking and the method to locate that points has been proposed. How to set, how to apply it to the test-bed and the examination result will be introduced in this paper.

Choi, Ki-Ho ;
The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 2, 2011, Pages 94~102
In this paper, a novel drowsiness detection algorithm using eye-blink pattern is proposed. The proposed drowsiness detection model using finite automata makes it easy to detect eye-blink, drowsiness and sleep by checking the number of input symbols standing for closed eye state only. Also it increases the accuracy by taking vertical projection histogram after locating the eye region using the feature of horizontal projection histogram, and minimizes the external effects such as eyebrows or black-framed glasses. Experimental results in eye-blinks detection using the JZU eye-blink database show that our approach achieves more than 93% precision and high performance.
A Design and Implementation of MPLS Based Wireless Mesh Network
Kim, Young-Han ; Kim, Jeong-Myun ;
The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 2, 2011, Pages 103~111
Recently, wireless mesh networks are used in various application areas. However, wireless mesh networks have limited bandwidth by the wireless transmission property, and have severe throughput degradation in multi-hop transmission in single channel wireless mesh networks. To solve this problem and support QoS, a lot of routing protocols have been proposed in mesh networks. In this paper, we propose a wireless mesh networks architecture with MPLS for QoS service. The path and traffic management from the application could be independent from QoS routing protocols by using the MPLS in wirelss mesh networks. In this paper, we design a MPLS-based mesh router with IEEE 802.11e for traffic differentiation and investigate the operation by implementation and test.

The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 2, 2011, Pages 112~121
The IEEE WAVE standard specification does not support handover operation since it is designed to transmit mainly the ITS-related messages that are limited in length. More advanced multimedia applications such as Internet browsing and streaming of video clips produced by CCTVs, however, require handover support such that a sequence of data packets can be received seamlessly while an OBU's association with the RSUs changes. This paper presents a new handover scheme that can operate without performance degradation in the cases where there are multiple RSUs in the areas of handover by making use of the IEEE 802.11f IAPP Move-notify messages, based on the fast handover scheme with proactive caching by disassociation messages introduced previously. Experimental results from the simulation shows that the proposed handover scheme outperforms the scheme based solely on multicast.
