The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 6, 2011, Pages 1~14
The surrogate safety assessment model which was developed based on the conflict theory by FHWA in the US is software to analyze traffic conflicts using the individual vehicle trajectory data from a microscopic traffic simulation model. This study aims at assessing the safety of different signal control strategies, including pre-time and actuated signal control, using the SSAM. To this end, this study effort has developed a microscopic traffic simulation model using VISSIM through a field study, and then produced the surrogate measures, including TTC, PET, DR, MaxS and DeltaS, and the numbers of conflicts, including rear-end, right angle and lane-changing conflicts. The assessment results indicated that the actuated signal control may produce more conflicts in terms of rear-end conflicts. The use of SSAM in the safety assessments for diverse traffic alternatives in a safe and fast way may contribute to the improvement of safety in the roadway transportation.

This study deals with the operational effectiveness of roundabout. The roundabout is currently under consideration in our country depending on the result of existing researches, that the roundabout decreases delay and is environmentally friendly compared to the signalized intersection. The purpose of the study is to analyze the operational effectiveness of the roundabout by the change of pedestrian traffic volume. In pursing the above, this study gave particular emphasis to designing a network of roundabout, developing some scenarios for analysis including both entering traffic volume and pedestrians volume, and comparatively analyzing the average controlled delay time per vehicle. In this study, VISSIM model was used as a tool for traffic simulation. The main results are as follows. First, as a result of analyzing a traffic delay based on the pedestrian traffic volume, pedestrian traffic volume was analyzed to have a great impact on the roundabout operation. Second, the more pedestrian traffic volume were evaluated to indicate the more traffic delay. When the entering volumes with 1,000persons/hour (pedestrian volume) were more than 800pcph in the single-lane and 1,600pcph in the double-lane roundabout, the operational efficiencies of signalized intersections were evaluated to be better than those of roundabouts.

Even if the traffic light is green, if vehicles enter a jammed intersection, they are violation of the law. The police is enforcing law as a part of a nation wide campaign. Because, using the camcorder, the police can not do enforcement the offending vehicle, there are other techniques. Our research group proposed automated photographic equipment enable to enforce moving violation in intersection. Using new license plate recognition technology and backtracking technology to trace the offending vehicle, once the system detects a violator, it records 8 wide pictures and 1picture from the front vehicle, showing it enter and proceed through the intersection. Field experimental results obtained in the system, the following conclusions. The three measures of effectiveness investigated were recognition rate 83.5, mis-match recognition rate 1.5%.

Although the demand of Variable Message Sign(VMS) has become pervasive in fulfilling the ITS policy, there are still several unsolved problematic issues. The most critical ones of them are inequality and inefficiency of providing traffic information. This paper proposes the Infra-free Variable Message Sign in order to provide useful informations such as road condition, weather, and traffic of the area, where constructing the infrastructure of communication and power supply is relatively very hard. First of all, the characteristics of infra-free Variable Message Sign are studied and analyzed in deep because of differences between normal Variable Message Sign and Infra-free Variable Message Sign in the configuration and the operating method due to the nature of the Infra-free Variable Message Sign. Futhermore, for effective power management of operating Infra-free Variable Message Sign with limited power acquired through stand-alone PV system, new battery connection structure and dynamically variable power managements for the differently shown messages on Variable Message Sign are proposed. The proposed structure in this paper can be applied to not only power management for Infra-free Variable Message Sign but also power management for the various applications using parallel connection battery system.

The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 6, 2011, Pages 63~73
Travel speed is an important parameter for measuring road traffic. UTIS(Urban Traffic Information System) was developed as a mobile detector for measuring link travel speeds in South Korea. After investigation, we founded that UTIS includes some missing data caused by the lack of probe vehicles on road segments, system failures and etc. Imputation is the practice of filling in missing data with estimated values. In this paper, we suggests a new model for imputing missing data to provide accurate link travel speeds to the public. In the field test, new model showed the travel speed measuring accuracy of 93.6%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the proposed model significantly improves travel speed measuring accuracy.

The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 6, 2011, Pages 74~83
The high-pass transportation information system directly collects section information by using probe cars and therefore can offer more reliable information to drivers. However, because the running condition and features of probe cars and statistical processing methods affect the reliability of the information and particularly because the section travel time is greatly influenced by whether there has been delay by signals on urban roads or not, there can be much deviation among the collected individual probe data. Accordingly, researches in multilateral directions are necessary in order to enhance the credibility of the section information. Yet, the precedent studies related to high-pass information provision have been conducted on the highway sections with the feature of continuous flow, which has a limit to be applied to the urban roads with the transportational feature of an interrupted flow. Therefore, this research aims at analyzing the features of high-pass transportation data on urban roads and finding a proper processing method. When the characteristics of the high-pass data on urban roads collected from RSE were analyzed by using a time-space diagram, the collected data was proved to have a certain pattern according to the arriving cars' waiting for signals with the period of the signaling cycle of the finish node. Moreover, the number of waiting for signals and the time of waiting caused the deviation in the collected data, and it was bigger in traffic jam. The analysis result showed that it was because the increased number of waiting for signals in traffic jam caused the deviation to be offset partially. The analysis result shows that it is appropriate to use the mean of this collected data of high-pass on urban roads as its representative value to reflect the transportational features by waiting for signals, and the standard of judgment of delay and congestion needs to be changed depending on the features of signals and roads. The results of this research are expected to be the foundation stone to improve the reliability of high-pass information on urban roads.

The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 6, 2011, Pages 98~107
In this paper, we propose the location determination system of an agent mobile device using the information provided by the WLAN(Wireless LAN) infrastructure. This system is configured as a typical ESS(Extended Service Set)-type WLAN structure with real-time location positioning engine and thru AP(Access Point) controller. The positioning engine collects the information of agent devices using SNMP(Small Network Management Protocol) thru AP controller and utilize those information as Cell ID. for LBS(Location Based Service). In the result of a real office environment implementation, the average success rate of inter-AP roaming is measured to 62.5% and the duration time of the device information update within the AP is average of 11 second of time, which means this system is adaptable to the location based service of above average accuracy but somewhat less urgency.

The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 6, 2011, Pages 108~117
Seoul metropolitan government has been operating traffic signal control system with the name of COSMOS since 2001. COSMOS uses the degrees of saturation and congestion which are calculated by installing loop detectors. At present, inductive loop detector is generally used for detecting vehicles but it is inconvenient and costly for maintenance since it is buried on the road. In addition, the estimated queue length might be influenced in case of error occurred in measuring speed, because it only uses the speed of vehicles passing by the detector. A traffic signal control algorithm which enables smooth traffic flow at intersection is proposed. The proposed algorithm assigns vehicles to the group of each lane and calculates traffic volume and congestion degree using traffic information of each group using VANETs(Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks) inter-vehicle communication. It does not demand additional devices installation such as cameras, sensors or image processing units. In this paper, the algorithm we suggest is verified for AJWT(Average Junction Waiting Time) and TQL(Total Queue Length) under single intersection model based on GLD(Green Light District) Simulator. And the result is better than Random control method and Best first control method. In case real-time control method with VANETs is generalized, this research that suggests the technology of traffic control in signalized intersections using wireless communication will be highly useful.

In this paper, a WCDMA experimental base station is constructed for power management of mobile communication base station and effective isotropic radiated power is determined by using received power of pilot channel measured on the line-of sight. The measurement system was constructed by a experimental base station and a measurement receiver and the common pilot channel (CPICH) power of the base station was measured. Effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) of the base station obtained by the measurement value considering correction factor for the errors represented the difference of 0.5 dB compared to the established EIRP of the base station.
Developing Trip Generation Models Considering Land Use Characteristics
Song, Jae-In ; Na, Seung-Won ; Choo, Sang-Ho ;
The Journal of The Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, volume 10, issue 6, 2011, Pages 126~139
In the traditional four-step travel demand models, each step is sequentially conducted following the model estimation at the previous step. The accuracy of the following model is partly dependent on whether the model at the former stage was properly established or not. Therefore, trip generation, which is the first step in this conventional model, has great effects on the modeling process and forecasting results. Linear regression models for trip generation of Seoul Metropolitan Area might increase the forcasting errors, since a variety of land-use characteristics are not considered. Hence, in this study, zonal factors such as socioeconomic and land use variables are included to improve the elaboration of trip generation. Comparing the %RMSE with the existing models, which contain bigger errors in the zones highly based on the secondary and tertiary industries than residence-based, the trip generation models including those variables seem more appropriate overall.

As the demand of Variable Message Sign(VMS) has become pervasive in fulfilling the ITS policy, the costs of maintaining the Variable Message Sign operation have also increased. This paper proposes the U-curved figure, the C-curved figure and the ventilated figure type for aerodynamic drag reduction on Variable Message Sign and shows the analysis of aerodynamic drag effects using Flow Analysis. As a results of the flow analysis for right-angled, 45 degrees from side to side and 45 degrees from up or down, the C-curved figure and the ventilated figure type show about 30% aerodynamic drag reduction in all direction. And the U-curved figure type shows vivid aerodynamic drag reduction for right-angled and 45 degree from side to side, but trivial aerodynamic drag reduction for 45 degree from up or down. It is possible to reduce not only the damage on Variable Message Sign due to typhoon because of the aerodynamic drag reduction, but also installation constraints because of lighter Variable Message Sign support structure by appling the proposed structure and analysis in this paper.
