Study on the Classification Methodology for DSRC Travel Speed Patterns Using Decision Trees

In this paper, travel speed patterns were deducted based on historical DSRC travel speed data using Decision Tree technique to improve availability of the massive amount of historical data. These patterns were designed to reflect spatio-temporal vicissitudes in reality by generating pattern units classified by months, time of day, and highway sections. The study area was from Seoul TG to Ansung IC sections on Gyung-bu highway where high peak time of day frequently occurs in South Korea. Decision Tree technique was applied to categorize travel speed according to day of week. As a result, five different pattern groups were generated: (Mon)(Tue Wed Thu)(Fri)(Sat)(Sun). Statistical verification was conducted to prove the validity of patterns on nine different highway sections, and the accuracy of fitting was found to be 93%. To reduce travel pattern errors against individual travel speed data, inclusion of four additional variables were also tested. Among those variables, `traffic condition on previous month` variable improved the pattern grouping accuracy by reducing 50% of speed variance in the decision tree model developed.
Study on Effect of Low Visibility Condition at Nighttime on Traffic Accident

This Study deals with effect of low visibility condition at nighttime on traffic accident. Roads for experiment of this study are Gyeongbu expressway, Seohaean expressway, Yeongdong expressway and Seoul beltway in Gyeonggi province. For this study, I subdivided basic straight section of them into 58 short section. And I analyzed effect of low visibility condition by darkness at nighttime on traffic accident by using 410 traffic accidents between January 1, 2009 and June 30, 2012 on those sections. The Quasi-experimental and negative binomial regression were applied to analyze effect of low visibility condition at nighttime on traffic accident. In this study, I only analyzed visibility difference of daytime and nighttime on traffic accident except other effective variables on traffic accidents. As a result, I have found that it is for low visibility condition at nighttime to have effect on traffic accidents at such specific conditions as Los A speed is maintained in basic straight section of expressway in fine weather. And I tried to do various analysis on types and causes of traffic accidents using the result of analysis.
Gradation Image Processing for Text Recognition in Road Signs Using Image Division and Merging

This paper proposes a gradation image processing method for the development of a Road Sign Recognition Platform (RReP), which aims to facilitate the rapid and accurate management and surveying of approximately 160,000 road signs installed along the highways, national roadways, and local roads in the cities, districts (gun), and provinces (do) of Korea. RReP is based on GPS(Global Positioning System), IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit), INS(Inertial Navigation System), DMI(Distance Measurement Instrument), and lasers, and uses an imagery information collection/classification module to allow the automatic recognition of signs, the collection of shapes, pole locations, and sign-type data, and the creation of road sign registers, by extracting basic data related to the shape and sign content, and automated database design. Image division and merging, which were applied in this study, produce superior results compared with local binarization method in terms of speed. At the results, larger texts area were found in images, the accuracy of text recognition was improved when images had been gradated. Multi-threshold values of natural scene images are used to improve the extraction rate of texts and figures based on pattern recognition.
Improvement of Information Connection System among Traffic Information Centers

The purpose of this study is to present the improvement of connection system between traffic information centers for reliable traffic information service. We recognized traffic information error caused by too much time in conjunction between traffic information centers, lack of reliability of traffic information caused by absence of generation time and generation institution of traffic information. We presented minimization methods of connection time, improvement methods of reliability of traffic information and development methods of connection state management system.
Broadband Main and Sub Antenna Connected by the Transmission Line

A broadband antenna using a main and a sub antenna for the mobile communication terminal such as mobile phone and ITS terminal is designed. Two antennas are based on the hybrid antenna that is operating both a monopole and a IFA(Inverted F Antenna). It`s applied the transmission line to connect both antennas. Sub antenna located in small space of the terminal allows space usability for the terminal design. Antenna for the hexa-frequency band of LTE700, CDMA, GSM, DCS, PCS and WCDMA is designed and implemented on the bare PC board that is same size of the mobile phone. This antenna was measured 3 : 1 VSWR over the whole design band. And average gains and efficiencies were-3.78 ~ -2.62dBi and 41.9 ~ 54.73% for LTE700/CDMA/GSM frequency band, -3.75 ~ -1.84dBi and 42.19 ~ 65.46% for DCS/PCS/WCDMA frequency band.
A 4-port MIMO Antenna for LTE Femtocell using Cross Decoupler

This paper describes the design, fabrication, and measurement of a 4-port femtocell MIMO antenna for LTE 700MHz(Band12, 13, 14, 17, 28, 44) applications. Based on microstrip patch antenna, an impedance matching is achieved by short pin. In order to obtain sufficient bandwidth and isolation between antenna elements in a limited dimension, a cross decoupler is used. With a Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR)
, the measured result of the fabricated antenna provides 105MHz(0.698~0.803MHZ) bandwidth and shows the gain with 1.97dBi and isolation above 13dB. As one of the key parameters for MIMO performance evaluation, correlation coefficient of MIMO is achieved within 0.2.
A study on driver experience to railway crossings in driving simulator

In the last decade, various situations were simulated through virtual environment due to rapid improvement of computer capability and technology. Transportation engineering also has adopted the virtual environment facility in order to identify drivers behaviour under various circumstances. This study aims to evaluate driver reactions to the introduction of new ITS interventions at railway crossings (RLX) in driving simulator. Three ITS safety devices were used to figure out how drivers reacted to them. In addition, a survey was conducted to find participants` work load and acceptance of the technology. The ultimate purpose of this paper is to evaluate ITS safety devices in various aspects. Each participant made 3 runs (2 baselines, 1 ITS randomly) for approximately 20 minutes each. The participants answered that current railway crossings did not look safe prior to experiment. They responded that the use of ITS technologies were easy and the technologies were more effective on passive railway crossings.
Analyzing the Characteristics of Trip Chaining Activities of the Elderly in Seoul Metropolitan Area

This paper analyzes the characteristics of trip chaining activities of elderly and explores temporal and spatial distribution. The research also estimates ordered probit model and binary logistic model to investigate various factors affecting trip chaining and mode choice patterns. We utilized household survey data for elderly conducted in 2006 and 2010 in Seoul metropolitan area. Research results indicate that trip chaining showed an increasing trend and simple trip chaining counts for more than 85%. GIS mapping expressed spatial distribution of trip departure and arrival areas, particularly showing regional changes in job-related trips. We also found that more factors influence trip chaining in 2010, compared with 2006, and travel cost is more sensitive than travel time in determining travel mode. The research contributes to establish transportation policies based on travel behavior of elderly in a upcoming super-aged society.
Context-aware Recommendation System for Water Resources Distribution in Smart Water Grids

In this paper, we conceive a context-aware recommendations system for water distribution in future smart water grids, with taking the end users` profiles, water types, network conditions into account. A spectral clustering approach is developed to cluster end users into different communities, based on the end users` common interests in water resources. A back-propagation (BP) neural network is designed to obtain the rating list of the end users` preferences on water resources and the water resource with the highest prediction rating is recommended to the end users. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves the improved accuracy of recommendation within 2.5% errors notably together with a better user experience in contrast to traditional recommendations approaches.
