An Empirical Study on Customer-Oriented Quality Creation of Shoe : Focusing on Kano′s Model and QFD
Journal of the Korean society for quality management, volume 30, issue 1, 2002, Pages 1~21
The purpose of this study was to empirically examine the customer oriented quality creation by considering quality elements required by customers in the product design process. The study tried to extract attractive quality elements by using Kano's model. After identifying the elements HOQ(the house of quality) of QFD(quality function deployment) was used to identify the trend of quality elements evaluation. Test for equal means (t-test) was applied to verify the attractive quality elements of adult shoes. It made us find the customer oriented quality elements from the customer needs and latent dissatisfaction. We collected the opinions of experts on shoes and complete the cause and effect diagram and affinity diagram (KJ method). The data of the questionnaire was put to the QFD and the contents of quality elements was identified by brain storming method. We calculated indexes which were the multiplication of weight and marks of quality elements in the cross table of the HOQ by QFD. Then we tested for the equality of means between the indexes and the sum of attractive quality elements. The results for equal means were statistically significant. To create the customer quality the product design should be differentiated between the age groups over attractive quality elements.
An Empirical Research for the Software Process Capability and Organizational Performance in Korea
Journal of the Korean society for quality management, volume 30, issue 1, 2002, Pages 22~46
Recently, increasing attention has been paid to building the software quality and software productivity due to ongoing software crisis. To overcome such problem, one of the many alternatives is to use the capability maturity model (CMM) suggested by the Software Engineering Institute(SEI), focusing on the improvement of software progress. This research is proposed the theoretical framework for CMM based on the previous studies, and review the status of software process on the software development organization. We then examine the impact of the software process capability on the organizational performance including financial measures and non-financial measures. Hypotheses on software process capability were tested 144 organizational units. The 62.5% of foreign companies are distribute to the second and third level, the Korean firms in this study are indicated the first level. Result indicate that maturity of software process may be served the key predictor of organizational performance, in particular the positive relationship between the software process and non-financial performance index such as customer service, IT Infrastructure, marketing, supplier and purchaser, production and operation.
Comparative Analysis of Levels of Internet Usage and Developments in Companies among Korea, U-S., and Japan
Journal of the Korean society for quality management, volume 30, issue 1, 2002, Pages 47~60
Recently, the range of using Internet in business is expanding rapidly. And through Internet, companies are strengthening both their internal efficiency and their external competitive advantage in the market. In recent years, building and managing companies' web sites are becoming unavoidable tasks in business. Such a trend is becoming more imperative in business over the world. There is a great deal of research in progress to study the cases of companies with increasing performance from the use of their Internet web sites. But it is considered that there has not been enough of study in the area of levels of Internet application in business especially in strategic areas and application levels among countries. This research is in the same line of the research that was carried out on such topics in 1999. study in 1999 showed that there are significant differences in the usage levels of Internet in business between countries with long history of using Internet and those who are not. The 1999 study also suggested the model on development stages of Internet usage in business. This study is the continuation of the 1999 research and used two years of data to compare and analyze the trend of the Internet development stages in leading corporations in Korea, U.S.A., and Japan. This study found that there have been significant developments in the ability to use Internet in business in three countries. The differences in Internet usage level in each stage among different countries are compared and analyzed in this study.
An Application of QFD to the Development of Full Automatic Temperature Controller
Journal of the Korean society for quality management, volume 30, issue 1, 2002, Pages 61~73
The Quality Function Deployment(QFD) is a Quality Management technique to maximize customers' satisfaction by reflecting customer requirements into all business processes, including concept definition, product planning, parts planning, process planning, production planning, and sales planning. The basic concept of the QFD is to translate customers' requirements appropriately into engineering characteristics, into parts characteristics, into process characteristics, and into specific requirements and activities in production. In this study, we reviewed and analyzed the application process of the QFD to the development of A2 FATC (Full Automatic Temperature Controller), an automotive component developed and produced by company A. It has been reported that by applying the QFD to the development of A2 FATC, company A. achieved 34% improvement in control robustness quality characteristic, 27% improvement in deviation quality characteristic, and 30% improvement in overall quality characteristics.
A Study on the Rectifying Inspection Plan & Life Test Sampling Plan Considering Cost
Journal of the Korean society for quality management, volume 30, issue 1, 2002, Pages 74~96
The objectives of this study is to suggest the rectifying sampling inspection plan considering quality cost. Limiting quality level(LQL) plans(also called LTPD plans) and outgoing quality(OQ) plans are considered. The Hald's linear cost model is discussed with and without a beta prior for the distribution of the fraction of nonconforming items in a lot. It is assumed that the sampling inspection is error free. We consider the design of reliability acceptance sampling plan (RASP) for failure rate level qualification at selected confidence level. The lifetime distribution of products is assumed to be exponential. MIL-STD-690C and K C 6032 standards provide this procedures. But these procedures have some questions to apply in the field. The cost of test and confidence level(1-
risk) are the problem between supplier and user. So, we suggest that the optimal life test sampling inspection plans using simple linear cost model considering product cost, capability of environment chamber, environmental test cost, and etc. Especially, we consider a reliability of lots that contain some nonconforming items. In this case we assumed that a nonconforming item fail after environmental life test. Finally, we develope the algorithm of the optimal sampling inspection plan based on minimum costs for rectifying inspection and RASP. And computer application programs are developed So, it is shown how the desired sampling plan can be easily found.
Parameter and Tolerance Designs of the Chemical Reaction Process
Journal of the Korean society for quality management, volume 30, issue 1, 2002, Pages 97~117
We apply Taguchi method to the process optimization problem of chemical reaction process, and some case studies are done to find out the way for cost reduction and quality improvement The parameter and tolerance designs of Taguchi mettled are done with operation data of a chemical process and we propose a procedure how to use and analyze the operation data to find the optimal process conditions and tolerance limits. In order to use the continuous values in experiment conditions, it is suggested how to determine the interval of each level by discrete values and to treat any missing values caused from discrete 4 levels.
Development and Application of Process Incapability Index including Capability Analysis of Inspection or Gage System
Journal of the Korean society for quality management, volume 30, issue 1, 2002, Pages 118~132
This paper presents a process incapability index to provide manager with various information of process and to reduce cost. The introduced process incapability indices indicate information about mean and variance of manufacturing process and variance of inspection process to evaluate process capability using ratio of variance and difference between target and mean to specification. This model can be used by the scale of six sigma management.
The kriging method with robust design for low noise intake system
Journal of the Korean society for quality management, volume 30, issue 1, 2002, Pages 133~143
We propose an optimal design to improve the muffler's capacity by reducing the noise of the intake system by adapting kriging method with the robust design. For the first stage of a design, the length and radius of each component of the current muffler system are selected as control factors. Then, the
table of orthogonal arrays is adapted to extract the effective main factors. As the second stage, the
table of orthogonal arrays using kriging method is adapted to take the significant factors into consideration. As an optimal design, the
table of orthogonal arrays with main effects is proposed and the kriging method is adapted for more efficient design. The kriging method improves the performance of intake system.
Estimation of Defect Rate from the Screening Test - the case of unknown sensitivity and specificity -
Journal of the Korean society for quality management, volume 30, issue 1, 2002, Pages 144~151
Consider the problem of estimating the confidence interval of defect rate of a specified population through a screening test. Relationship between defect rate of the population and sensitivity and specificity of the screening test is discussed. More general statistical problem is introduced with the assumption of unknown imperfect specificity. An improved version of Hogan & Gladden(1978)'s estimator is proposed and discussed. Simulation studies are performed to compare the efficiency of the proposed estimator with current estimators.
Note on classification and regression tree analysis
Journal of the Korean society for quality management, volume 30, issue 1, 2002, Pages 152~161
The analysis of large data sets with hundreds of thousands observations and thousands of independent variables is a formidable computational task. A less parametric method, capable of identifying important independent variables and their interactions, is a tree structured approach to regression and classification. It gives a graphical and often illuminating way of looking at data in classification and regression problems. In this paper, we have reviewed and summarized tile methodology used to construct a tree, multiple trees and the sequential strategy for identifying active compounds in large chemical databases.
An Algorithm For Approximating The Reliability of Network with Multistate Units
Journal of the Korean society for quality management, volume 30, issue 1, 2002, Pages 162~171
A practical algorithm of generating most probable states in decreasing order of probability, given the probability of each unit\`s state, is suggested for approximating reliability(performability) evaluation of a network with multistate(multimode) units. Method of approximating network reliability for a given measure with most probable states is illustrated with a numerical example. The proposed method in this paper is compared with the previous method regarding memory requirement. Our method has some advantages for computation and achieves improvement with regard to memory requirement for a certain condition judging from the computation experiment.
