A Study on Reliability Program of the Armed Vehicles

Purpose: In this study, A reliability assurance model (or reliability program) is proposed to evaluate the reliability of an armed vehicle. The reliability assurance is performed through the reliability-centered activities during its life cycle of development/design, production, deployment, maintenance, and disposal. Methods: By reflecting the current situations of korea defense industry, a reliability assurance model is built up based on the benchmarking results of world leading companies' best practices in same fields. Results: The proposed reliability program of armed vehicles, which is based on the reliability program of ANSI/GEIA-STD 0009, uses DMAIC process of the six sigma methodology from design phase to testing and evaluation phase. Conclusion: This research is supposed to develop reliability program of armed vehicles by integrating DFSS, DFR and reliability growth process.
A Study on Radiation Shielding Materials for Protective Garments using Monte Carlo Simulation

Purpose: Lead has been widely used in radiation shielding for its low price and high workability. Recently in several europe countries, use of lead was banned for environmental issues. Also lead can cause health problems like alergies. Alternative materials for lead are highly required. The purpose of this study was to propose lead free radiation shielding material. Methods: Research of radiation shielding in Korea is not easy for certain limits such as radiation materials, experimental facilities and places. The collected data through the research were simulated using MCNPX. The simulation tools used for this study were utilized Monte Carlo method. Results: we suggest new design of lead free radiation shielding material using MCNPX code comparing shielding performance of new composite materials to lead. Conclusion: This newly introduced nano-scale composite of metal and polymer makes new chance for highly lightened radiation protective garments with endurable shielding performance.
A Study on the Standardization of Fineness Measurement for the Thermal Insulator of Military Textiles

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to enhance the reliability of quality inspection by standardize the fineness test method of the thermal insulator of military textiles Methods: We have measured the thermal insulator of military textiles by microscope with three different ways and the effectiveness of their difference were analyzed by one-way layout design. Results: We have suggest the standardized the fineness test method of the thermal insulator of military textiles through advanced research. As a result we have verified hollow ratio of heat insulating fiber affect fineness test methods. The fineness test method for the thermal insulator applied with different methods following hollow ratio. We have verified that when the hollow ratio over 90%, the fineness of the thermal insulator measured from fiber-length, if it has over 80%, the cross-section length of hollow and if it has less 80%, the cross-section area of hollow is applied, respectively. Conclusion: This study indicated that the test method of fineness shows high reliability. Heat insulating fibers which have high evenness shows narrow variations(5/% or less, only CV 25%) irrespectively under different testing equipment or institute. Based ons the results, we have suggest the standardization of test methods for fineness by microscope method and produced the registration of Group Standard in Korean Standards Association.
A study on Mass production stage Tank Battle Management System Environmental Stress Screening test method and application improvement based on Production process data

Purpose: In this study, we apply environmental stress screening (ESS) to battle management system (BMS) of a tank and use the ESS profile based on production process data, guided by MIL-HDBK-781/344/2164. Methods: To optimize ESS Profile of the BMS of a tank, we estimate ESS model parameters (e.g., defect density, screening strength) using primary production failure reporting and corrective action system (FRACAS) data of military supply contract firm. Results: First, we collect the Primary production FRACAS data of military supply contract firm. Second, we compute curve fitting approach to find patent defect density and latent defect density using FRACAS data. Third, we solve the equation of Defect Density(patent defect density + latent defect density)(
) and Screening Strength(SS) Using second step data. As a result of analysis according to the order, we calculate
(Temperature stress case : 74.02, Vibration stress : 10.252) and : SS(Temperature stress case : 0.4632, Vibration stress : 0.4142) and confirm the Condition II-D based on MIL-HDBK-344. According to Condition II-D, it is necessary to modify existing ESS profile through decreasing the
and increasing the SS. Conclusion: Identification of defect causes through ESS approach reduce defect densities for production. It provides feedback to a lessons-learned data base to avoid similar problems on next generation tank BMS.
A Study on Crack Formation in the K11 Objective Individual Combat Weapon Fire Control System using Analysis of Variance

Purpose: This study examined the problem of crack formation in the fire control system(FCS) of the K11 objective individual combat weapon(OCIW), using design of experiment analysis. Three hypothesis were considered. The first hypothesis is that bolted joint has an effect on impulse caused by firing the weapon and the second hypothesis is that a short time interval of shooting has an effect on impulse and lastly, the third hypothesis is that a positive correlation has between the bolted joint of the FCS and the impulse. Methods: The relationship between the bolted joint and the impulse cause by firing the weapon were examined experimentally. The first and second hypothesis was tested using correlation analysis and the t-test. Results: Using ANOVA, the first null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. ANONA confirmed the second null hypothesis. Correlation analysis dismissed the last null hypothesis. A positive correlation between the bolted joint and the impulse caused by shooting the weapon was verified. Conclusion: The bolted joint of the K11 FCS and the barrel of the K11 affect the impulse caused by firing the weapon. A positive correlation was established between the bolted joint of the FCS and the impulse on firing the K11 OICW.
A Study on Effects of the Cure Pressure for the Improvement of the Electrical Performance of the Sandwich Type Radome

Purpose: This paper analyzes the phenomenon on the degradation of the electrical performance by the pressure in the manufacturing process of sandwich type radomes. Methods: This paper consists of two steps to analyze the relation between the electrical performance and the pressure. First, the thickness of the core of the flat panels which were fabricated with different pressure was measured with the microscope, and then the electrical performance of the flat panels was analyzed with simulation and experiment. Based on the results of the electrical performance and the measured thickness with respect to the flat panels, the relation between the electrical performance and the applied pressure in the manufacturing process was analyzed. Results: The simulated and measured results with respect to the flat panel shows that the high pressure results in the nonuniform thickness of the core, which is applied to the radome fabrication. As a result, the degradation of the electrical performance occurs because the unintended scattered field is generated as the electromagnetic wave transmits (or impinges upon) the radome. Furthermore, we observed that the electrical performance of both the flat panel and the radome got worse as the high pressure was applied. Conclusion: Through simulation and experiment, therefore, it is demonstrated that for the high pressure in the manufacturing process the nonuniform thickness of the core increases and results in the degradation of the electrical performance of the radome.
A Review and Comparison between Quality Policy and Quality Strategy

Purpose: The terminology of "policy" or "quality policy" is widely used in quality management areas. But few people know and use that word with the accurate concept. This paper compares the concepts and suggests the contents for quality policy and quality strategy. Methods: This paper compares the concepts between policy and strategy through the literatures and suggests the contents for quality policy and quality strategy by exploratory study. Results: This paper suggests the contents for quality policy and quality strategy which are useful to establish the quality planning in companies. Conclusion: Strategy and policy are intimately related, and so confused in applications, therefore distinguishing both concepts clearly is necessary for effective use of them. This paper will help the right use of both concepts by showing the examples.
Suggestion for Enhancement of Product Examination Government Quality Assurance Activity

Purpose : Recently, many quality issues are aroused in military forces, such as failures in K-series weapons, combat uniforms' defects and 40mm ammunition explosion accident. To address these problems, Defense Agency for Technology and Quality(DTaQ) introduced new systems such as Manufacturing Readiness Assessment(MRA), Test Report Information System(TRIS) and so on. However, these activities require the human and time resources which cannot be increased in short period. In this paper, we suggest more practical and efficient product examination method. Methods : The most popular and widely used government's quality assurance technique is a sampling method to examine the product. In this research, we first reviewed the DTaQ's quality assurance regulation, then identified several possible problems and finally suggested more efficient and effective sampling plans. Results : We have suggested new sampling framework and evaluated its performance on two military supplies by comparing with other sampling method, and observed that the number of tested samples can be substantially reduced. Therefore, required quality assurance time can be saved. Conclusion : In this paper, we first reviewed the product examination frameworks of DTaQ, PPQMS and DCMA. Then we identified several possible problems which can cause the loss of objectivity and time. To handle these problems, we suggested the new product examination framework and tested the framework to verify the performance.
A Case Study of Vibration Reduction of Helicopter Development Configuration Using Graphic Analysis and Desirability Function

Purpose: This paper presents graphic methods and desirability function approach to determine best vibration reducing configuration for Surion helicopter. Many flight tests were executed and nine vibration levels in cockpit, cabin, and engine room were measured in each test and analyzed to find optimal configuration. Methods: Graphic analysis methods such as matrix, scatter, and box plots are used to identify better vibration-reducing flight test conditions. As an integrated measure of the performance of 9 vibration levels desirability function approach is adopted. Results: Three vibration reducing configurations are found to be proper and one configuration is recommended. Conclusion: It is expected to be helpful to adopt graphic and desirability function methods presented in this paper in developing new products or systems like helicopters. For efficient and effective flight testing of helicopters, it will be necessary to have consistently homogeneous environment for flight testing and applying design of experiments techniques and analyzing test data.
Study of Development of Selective Removal Adsorption Ion Exchange Resin Materials for Fabricated with Chemical-biological Cloth by QFD

Purpose: Through studying the expert's and non-experts panel responses to the questions regarding the attributes of chemical-biological protection cloth quality in terms of the levels of customer demand and technical factors has been studied. We are applied to a QFD matrix with find out the relationship between the selective removal efficiency of chemical-biological cloth and the guidelines of technical approach. Methods: We fabricated several composite of ion-exchange resins with selectively permeable performance designed to facilities water vapor transport and selective adsorption of the harmful gases. With these materials, we characterized on the selectively permeable performance to identify ion-exchange resin with chemical-biological protective cloth. Results: Results showed that ion exchange materials possessed performance with selectively efficiencies as NH3, SOx, NOx and HCl gas. The selective adsorption amount of ammonia and hydrogen gases were
with TRILITE SCR-BH sulfonated ion exchange resin. The PP non-woven/ion exchange resin adsorbent materials possessed performance with water vapor permeability were 1,100-1,350 g/m2/day, it's was two times high value compare with activated carbon. With these materials, we characterized selectively removal efficiency to identify new ion-exchange material with chemical-biological protective capability. Conclusion: This study shows that a QFD aids in deciding with of the adsorption parameters to optimized with chemical-biological protection cloth manufacturing.
Development of a Reliability Index using Design, Development and Production Information

Purpose: In this paper, we developed a reliability index (RI) to efficiently compare reliability of products based on the design, development and production information such as reliability tests, quality, product life-cycle management. RI also can be applied to reliability prediction of a novel product as well as comparison evaluation among existing products. Methods: For evaluating RI, we proposed evaluation process which is composed of five steps. Target modules are selected based on warranty data and correlation analysis. Scores of selected target modules are calculated by scoring function. Finally, weights of RI model are determined by optimization method. Results: This paper presented an empirical analysis based on failure data of mobile devices. In this case study, we demonstrated that there is a direct correlation between evaluated RI and field failure probability of each product. Conclusion: We proposed the index for comprehensive and effective assessment of product reliability level. From the procedure of this study, we expected to be applied for reliability estimation of novel products and deduction of field failure-related factors.
The Relationships among Suitability of the Entertainer Advertising Model, Relationship Quality and Brand Loyalty in Coffee Shop

Purpose: This study was to identify the structural relationships among suitability of entertainer advertising model, relationship quality and brand loyalty in coffee shop. Methods: This study collected data from those who visited two reputed franchised coffee shops. A variety of statistical methods were used; descriptive analysis, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling analysis. Results: The research results from this study are as follows: First, only credibility factor has a positive impact on relationship quality; second credibility and expertness factors positively influence brand loyalty; and third, there is a positive relationship between relationship quality and brand loyalty. Conclusion: The results of this research are useful for identifying the role of advertising models's suitability in estimating relationship quality and brand loyalty and strategies for strengthening brand loyalty for coffee shops.
A Strategy for EMS Service Quality Improvement Using Kano Model and Improvement-Gap Analysis

Purpose: Express mail service(EMS) supplied by 'Korea POST'is an international postal service which brings letters, documents and parcels to a destination abroad in the fastest and safest way. This service is in a tough competition with global companies such as TNT, FedEx, DHL or UPS. To build an effective strategy for being competitive, an intensive study on EMS service quality should be accomplished from a customer's perspective. Methods: Kano model and improvement gap analysis are used to categorize and prioritize EMS service quality attributes. A 5-point Lickert scale is employed to apply the Kano model and improvement gap analysis. Each quality attribute can be classified as weak in comparison with competitors, critical for improvement, or potentially competitive. Results: Price, on-time delivery and delivery quality are to be kept as is; fast delivery, parking convenience and staff expertise can be potentially competitive; and the other attributes are considered to be critical for improvement. Conclusions: Fast reimbursement and proper compensation when shipping items are lost or damaged are to be improved with high priority. Efforts to secure fast delivery, parking convenience and staff expertise are needed to be competitive in the future.
Estimation of Elevator Wire Life Using Accelerated Degradation Model

Purpose: This study is to estimate the life of elevator wire rope by using the accelerated degradation test with two accelerating variables of applied load and corrosion. Methods: Linear regression method is used to find the pseudo life of elevator wire rope at each combination of accelerating variables and the median life of elevator wire rope at use condition is estimated under the assumption that the life of elevator wire rope follows lognormal distribution. Results: The particular case study demonstrated that the results of the elevator wire life estimation by using the proposed method can provide the better solutions than existing methods. Conclusion: It can be economical to use accelerated degradation model for estimating the life of elevator wire rope.
A Study on the Effects of Innovation Characteristics and Quality of Appliance Systems on Intention to Adopt

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to grasp the level of effects innovative features and quality of the appliance system on organizational performance and ultimately analyze the willingness of the IT staff to adopt an appliance system. Methods: The survey was conducted on 350 vendors' clients and partners who currently use an appliance system from March to May 2014. A total of 331 effective questionnaires were collected and analyzed using PASW18 and SmartPLS. Results: The results show that relative advantage, facilitating condition and trialability and quality factors all had an effect on organizational performance expectations. Further, when an appliance system is adopted, it was shown that cost and reliability emphasized by a vendor did not produce any significant effects on organizational performance expectations. Conclusion: This study is significant as it is the first to combine such models as Innovation Diffusion Theory, Information Systems Success Model, and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology with a new external variable. In addition, it illustrated how variables affect the adoption of an appliance system such as a new innovation system.
Analysis and Classification on CSR activities of global companies in rural area

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to propose useful suggestions by analyzing cases as to how global companies have implemented a rural outreach as a part of their CSR activities. Methods: Case studies were conducted. The cases were selected through the literature review and, based on two-by-two matrices, four types of cases were classified. Results: The results of this study are as follows; CSR activities of global companies in the rural area were categorized into two parts - "where to support(agricultural business or rural area)" and "how to support(whether to connect with business or not)." Conclusion: Domestic companies need to refer to the result of this study to increase the diversity and the effectiveness of their rural outreaches of CSR activities.
A Study on Optimal Operation Conditions for an Electronic Device Alignment System by Using Design of Experiments

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to design a systematic method to estimate optimal operation conditions of design variables for an electronic device alignment system. Method: The 2-level factorial design and the central composite design are used in order to plan experiments. Based on the experiment results, a regression model is established to find optimal conditions for the design variables. Results: 3 of 5 design variables are selected as major factors that affect the alignment system significantly. The optimized condition for each variable is estimated by using a sequential experiment plan and a quadratic regression model. Conclusion: The method designed in this study provides an efficient and systematic plan to select the optimized operation condition for the design variables. The method is expected to improve inspection accuracy of the system and reduce the development cost and period.
