Journal of Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems, volume 18, issue 4, 2008, Pages 437~444
DOI : 10.5391/JKIIS.2008.18.4.437
This paper deals with the biometric template protection in the biometric system which has been widely used for personal authentication. First, we consider the structure of the biometric system and the function of its sub-systems and define the biometric template and identification(ID) information. And then, we describe the biometric template attack points of a biometric system and attack examples and provide their countermeasures. From this, we classify the vulnerability which can be protected by encryption and hashing techniques. For more detail investigation of these at real operating situations, we analyze them and suggest several protection methods for the typical application scheme of biometric systems such as local model, download model, attached model, and center model. Finally, we also handle the privacy problem which is most controversy issue related to the biometric systems and suggest some guidances of safeguarding procedures on establishing privacy sympathy biometric systems.

Journal of Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems, volume 18, issue 4, 2008, Pages 445~450
DOI : 10.5391/JKIIS.2008.18.4.445
In order to analyze the reliabilities of the fuzzy systems, the reliabilities of the components in the fuzzy systems are represented by real values between zero and one, fuzzy numbers, intervals of confidence, vague sets, interval valued fuzzy sets, etc in the conventional researches. In this paper, we propose a method to represent and analyze the reliabilities of the fuzzy systems based on the interval valued vague sets defined in the universe of discourse [0, 1]. In the interval valued vague sets, the upper bounds and the lower bounds of the conventional vague sets[12, 14] are represented as the intervals. Therefore, it can allow the reliabilities of a fuzzy system to represent and analyze in a more flexible manner. Because the proposed method uses the simplified arithmetic operations of the fuzzy triangular numbers rather than the complicated of the fuzzy trapezoidal numbers mentioned by Kumar, the execution of the proposed method is faster than the one.

Sohn, Young-Sun ; Kim, Bo-Sung ;
Journal of Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems, volume 18, issue 4, 2008, Pages 451~455
DOI : 10.5391/JKIIS.2008.18.4.451
In this paper we embody a system that recognizes the printed alphabet of two font types (Batang, Dodum) inputted by a black-and-white CCD camera and converts it into an editable text form. The image of the inputted printed sentences is binarized, then the rows of each sentence are separated through the vertical projection using the Histogram method, and the height of the characters are normalized to 48 pixels. With the reverse application of the basic principle of the Nonogram puzzle to the individual normalized character, the character is covered with the pixel-based squares, representing the characteristics of the character as the numerical information of the Nonogram puzzle in order to recognize the character through the comparison with the standard pattern information. The test of 2609 characters of font type Batang and 1475 characters of font type Dodum yielded a 100% recognition rate.

Journal of Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems, volume 18, issue 4, 2008, Pages 456~462
DOI : 10.5391/JKIIS.2008.18.4.456
The classification is that a new data is classified into one of given classes and is one of the most generally used data mining techniques. Memory-Based Reasoning (MBR) is a reasoning method for classification problem. MBR simply keeps many patterns which are represented by original vector form of features in memory without rules for reasoning, and uses a distance function to classify a test pattern. If training patterns grows in MBR, as well as size of memory great the calculation amount for reasoning much have. NGE, FPA, and RPA methods are well-known MBR algorithms, which are proven to show satisfactory performance, but those have serious problems for memory usage and lengthy computation. In this paper, we propose DPA (Dynamic Partition Averaging) algorithm. it chooses partition points by calculating GINI-Index in the entire pattern space, and partitions the entire pattern space dynamically. If classes that are included to a partition are unique, it generates a representative pattern from partition, unless partitions relevant partitions repeatedly by same method. The proposed method has been successfully shown to exhibit comparable performance to k-NN with a lot less number of patterns and better result than EACH system which implements the NGE theory and FPA, and RPA.

Journal of Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems, volume 18, issue 4, 2008, Pages 463~470
DOI : 10.5391/JKIIS.2008.18.4.463
In this paper, we confirm that the two properties, 'existence of obstacles' and 'connectivity between obstacles', involved in information acquired by a robot can be used efficiently for location recognition of the robot by using rough sets. Moreover, we propose a method which can reduce ambiguity of the location recognition by applying the properties and recognize the robot's location with distrustful information of the environment where the robot moves. We confirmed it through computer simulation that a robot moves to a goal with only the map containing not enough information on the real environment.

Microarray technology in biological science enables molecular level observations and analyses on the biological phenomina by allowing to measure the RNA expression profiles in cells. Microarray data analysis is applied in various purposes such as identifying significant genes which react to drug treatment, understanding the genome scale phenomina. In drug response experiments, the microarray-based gene expression analysis could provide meaningful information. It is sometimes needed to identify the genes which shows different expression behavior for treatment group and normal group each other. When the normal group shows the medium level expression, it is not easy to discriminate the group just by expression level comparison. This paper proposes a method which selects group-wise representative values for each gene and sets the value range of the groups in order to filter out the genes with specific pattern. It also shows some experiment results.

Adaptive Blowing Control Algorithm for Autonomous Control of Underwater Flight Vehicle
Kim, Hyun-Sik ;
Journal of Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems, volume 18, issue 4, 2008, Pages 482~487
DOI : 10.5391/JKIIS.2008.18.4.482
In case of flooding, the underwater flight vehicle (UFV) executes the blowing by blowing ballast tanks off using high pressure air (HPA), while it also uses control planes and a propulsion unit to reduce the overshoot depth caused by a flooding and blowing sequence. However, the conventional whole HPA blow-off method lets the body on the surface after blowing despite slight flooding. This results in the unnecessary mission failure or body exposure. Therefore, it is necessary to keep the body at the near surface by the blowing control while reducing the overshoot depth. To solve this problem, an adaptive blowing control algorithm, which is based on the decomposition method expanding the expert knowledge in depth control and the adaptive method using fuzzy basis function expansion (FBFE), is proposed. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, the blowing control of UFV is performed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm effectively solves the problems in the UFV blowing control system online.

Journal of Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems, volume 18, issue 4, 2008, Pages 488~493
DOI : 10.5391/JKIIS.2008.18.4.488
A mathematical model of molten steel level for continuous casting process is presented, where the molten steel level, input and output flow in the mold, the relation between stopper position and input flow etc. are considered. The mathematical model is implemented and simulated by using MATLAB. Comparing the result of molten steel level from the simulator with that of real plant, the performance of the model is shown to be reasonable. By using this simulator, it is shown that PI controller with variable P gain, adjusted by fuzzy logic system, has better control result than conventional PI controller.

In the field of development of human interface technology, the interactions between human and machine are important. The research on emotion recognition helps these interactions. This paper presents an algorithm for emotion recognition based on personalized speech signals. The proposed approach is trying to extract the characteristic of speech signal for emotion recognition using PLP (perceptual linear prediction) analysis. The PLP analysis technique was originally designed to suppress speaker dependent components in features used for automatic speech recognition, but later experiments demonstrated the efficiency of their use for speaker recognition tasks. So this paper proposed an algorithm that can easily evaluate the personal emotion from speech signals in real time using personalized emotion patterns that are made by PLP analysis. The experimental results show that the maximum recognition rate for the speaker dependant system is above 90%, whereas the average recognition rate is 75%. The proposed system has a simple structure and but efficient to be used in real time.

Cho, Seh-Yeong ;
Journal of Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems, volume 18, issue 4, 2008, Pages 501~506
DOI : 10.5391/JKIIS.2008.18.4.501
Statistical POS tagging is prone to error, because of the inherent limitations of statistical data, especially single source of data. Therefore it is widely agreed that the possibility of further enhancement lies in exploiting various knowledge sources. However these data sources are bound to be inconsistent to each other. This paper shows the possibility of using maximum entropy model to Korean language POS tagging. We use as the knowledge sources n-gram data and trigger pair data. We show how perplexity measure varies when two knowledge sources are combined using maximum entropy method. The experiment used a trigram model which produced 94.9% accuracy using Hidden Markov Model, and showed increase to 95.6% when combined with trigger pair data using Maximum Entropy method. This clearly shows possibility of further enhancement when various knowledge sources are developed and combined using ME method.

It is show that increasing of aged and handicapped people requires development of Ubiquitous computing technique to offer the specialized service for handicapped-people. For this, we need a development of Context Awareness and Service Reasoning Technique that the technique is supplied interaction between user and U-environment instead of the old unilateral relation. The old research of context awareness needed probabilistic presentation model like a Bayesian Network based on expert Systems for recognize given circumstance by a domain of uncertain real world. In this article, we define a domain of disorder activity assistant service application and context model based on ontology in diversified environment and minimized intervention of user and developer. By use this context model, we apply the structure learning of Bayesian Network and decide the service and activity to development of application service for handicapped people. Finally, we define the proper Conditional Probability Table of the structured Bayesian Network and if random situation is given to user, then present state variable of Activity and Service by given Causal relation of Bayesian Network based on Conditional Probability Table and it can be result of context awareness.

In this paper, we present the development of an intelligent diagnosis system for detecting faults of the transmission line. Based on the TFDR (Time-Frequency Domain Reflectometry), the fault detecting performs to measure the location of fault line. We analyze the reflected signal which is sent from the wire detecting system and classify the fault type of the wires by using intelligent diagnosis system. In order to analyze effectively, we construct the intelligent diagnosis system which is based on the fuzzy-bayesian algorithm. Finally, we provide the simulation results which are performed at transmission line to evaluate the feasibility and generality of the proposed method in this paper.

Park et.al. defined the intuitionistic fuzzy metric space in which it is a little revised in Park, and Park et.a1. proved a fixed point theorem of Banach for the contractive mapping of a complete intuitionistic fuzzy metric space. In this paper, we will establish common fixed point theorem for four self maps in intuitionistic fuzzy metric space. These results have been used to obtain translation and generalization of Grabiec's contraction principle.

Journal of Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems, volume 18, issue 4, 2008, Pages 530~536
DOI : 10.5391/JKIIS.2008.18.4.530
Localization is one of the fundamental problems in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that forms the basis for many location-aware applications. Localization in WSNs is to determine the position of node based on the known positions of several nodes. Most of previous localization method use triangulation or multilateration based on the angle of arrival (AOA) or distance measurements. In this paper, we propose an enhanced centroid localization method based on edge weights of adjacent nodes using fuzzy modeling and genetic algorithm when node connectivities are known. The simulation results shows that our proposed centroid method is more accurate than the simple centroid method using connectivity only.

Journal of Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems, volume 18, issue 4, 2008, Pages 537~542
DOI : 10.5391/JKIIS.2008.18.4.537
Cricket is an excellent indoor location system and it can successfully solve many critical problems such as user privacy, decentralized administration. But in some practical applications, Cricket sometimes didn't provide location with enough accuracy, and was unable to determine when it was giving inaccurate information. For getting high-accuracy tracking performance from location data contaminated with noise, some types of filters are required. Kalman Filter is an efficient recursive filter that estimates the state of a dynamic system from a series of incomplete and noisy measurement. The filter is very powerful in the field of autonomous and assisted navigation. In this paper, we carry out comparative studies to validate the performance of the application of Kalman Filter to Cricket based localization system.

Support Vector machine is the classifier which is based on the statistical training theory. Twin Support Vector Machine(TWSVM) is a kind of binary classifier that determines two nonparallel planes by solving two related SVM-type problems. The training time of TWSVM is shorter than that of SVM, but TWSVM doesn't shows worse performance than that of SVM. This paper proposes the TWSVM which is applied fuzzy membership, and compares the performance of this classifier with the other classifiers using Ionosphere radar data set.

Seo, Ki-Sung ; Choi, Jun-Seok ; Cho, Young-Wan ;
Journal of Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems, volume 18, issue 4, 2008, Pages 555~561
DOI : 10.5391/JKIIS.2008.18.4.555
This Paper introduces new approach to develop fast and reliable gaits for quadruped robot using GA(genetic algorithm). Planning gaits for legged robots is a challenging task that requires optimizing parameters in a highly irregular and multidimensional space. Recent approaches have problems to select proper parameters which are not known in advance and optimize more than ten to twenty parameters simultaneously. In our approach, the effects of major gait parameters are analysed and used to guide the search more efficiently. The experiments of Sony AIBO ERS-7 in Webots environment indicate that our approach is able to produce much improved results in fast velocity and reliability.

Journal of Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems, volume 18, issue 4, 2008, Pages 566~571
DOI : 10.5391/JKIIS.2008.18.4.566
In this paper, we propose a footstep planning method of biped robot based on the Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO). We define configuration and locomotion primitives for biped robots in the 2 dimensional workspace. A footstep planning method is designed using learning process of PSO that is initialized with a population of random objects and searches for optima by updating generations. The footstep planner searches for a feasible sequence of locomotion primitives between a starting point and a goal, and generates a path that avoids the obstacles. We design a path optimization algorithm that optimizes the footstep number and planning cost based on the path generated in the PSO learning process. The proposed planning method is verified by simulation examples in cluttered environments.

Jung, Sung-Won ; Lee, Do-Heon ; Lee, Kwang-H. ;
Journal of Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems, volume 18, issue 4, 2008, Pages 572~578
DOI : 10.5391/JKIIS.2008.18.4.572
We analyze the search space considered by the previously proposed R-CORE method for learning Bayesian network structures of large scale. Experimental analysis on the search space of the method is also shown. The R-CORE method reduces the search space considered for Bayesian network structures by recursively clustering the random variables and restricting the orders between clusters. We show the R-CORE method has a similar search space with the previous method in the worst case but has a much less search space in the average case. By considering much less search space in the average case, the R-CORE method shows less tendency of overfitting in learning Bayesian network structures compared to the previous method.
