Effect of Internal Fibrillation on the Paper Properties
Journal of Korea Technical Association of The Pulp and Paper Industry, volume 35, issue 1, 2003, Pages 1~6
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of internal fibrillation on the pulp and paper properties. The internal fibrillation was introduced into the SwBKP and recycled SwBKP by the mechanical treatment with Hobart mixer. WRV and physical properties of SwBKP were improved by the internal fibrillation. However the mechanical treatment of recycled SwBKP resulted in the decrease of strength properties of paper except for the tear index, although it was observed that WRV was somewhat increased by the mechanical treatment. The decrease of strength properties of recycled SwBKP might be caused by the hornification of fiber and the decrease of fiber strength.
Development of Automatic Analysis System for Water Repellency of Packaging Paper -Automatic Measurement of Water Repellency Based on KS M 7057-
Journal of Korea Technical Association of The Pulp and Paper Industry, volume 35, issue 1, 2003, Pages 7~12
The test results for water repellency of paper and paperboard according to KS M 7057 can readily be influenced by an operator's bias. In order to discard such bias, the automatic analysis program of water repellency was developed based on different shape features of a liquid trace formed on a specimen. That is, the shape of a liquid track flowing down on the specimen with an angle of
was evaluated according to width variation between head and tail of the trace(
), uniformity of a liquid flow(
), length of long traces(
), eccentricity of liquid traces(
), and then was recognized as a specific degree of water repellency. Finally, the automatic analysis system of water repellency based upon KS M 7057 made it possible to readily measure water resistance of paper and paperboards classified into R0 to R10.
Environmentally Friendly Paper with Superior Moisture -Proof Properties(II) -Recyclable properties of moisture-proof paper-
Journal of Korea Technical Association of The Pulp and Paper Industry, volume 35, issue 1, 2003, Pages 13~18
This study was done in an effort to evaluate the possibility of recyclability of moisture-proof paper. Because it is difficult to recycle laminated moisture-proof paper, a mixture of styrene-butadiene latex(SB latex) and wax emulsion was used as moisture-proof paper chemicals. A bar coater was applied to make moisture-proof paper and the coated weight was 17 g/
. The mixing ratios of SB latex to wax emulsion were 85 : 15, 87 : 13, and 90 : 10, respectively. It was observed that the moisture-proof paper treated with SB latex and wax emulsion at the appropriate ratio could be recycled effectively. The moisture-proof paper was similar to base paper in degree of pulping, and there was no significant difference in dispersion between moisture-proof paper and base paper. Most of wax particle which caused the spots during drying process could be removed by flotation process. Tensile strength and tear strength of handsheets made of both moisture-proof paper and base paper after pulping was measured to examine the fiber bonding and no significant difference in mechanical properties was observed.
Development of Higher Functional Coating Agents for Pulp Mold (II) -Manufacture of mixed coating agents-
Journal of Korea Technical Association of The Pulp and Paper Industry, volume 35, issue 1, 2003, Pages 19~26
In recent years, numerous studies have been carried out to find out the possible substitution of PE-coated paperboards used in packaging of watery or oily foods. Accordingly, this study was carried out to obtain the basic data for producing higher functional coating agents for pulp mold by evaluating various kinds of mixed coating agents. At that time, two kinds of synthetic coating agents(AKD, PYA) and three kinds of natural coating agent(CMC, corn starch, oxidized starch) were used for making the mixed coating agents respectively. Physical properties of coated paperboards were tested. Conclusions obtained from this study were as follows. Based on concentrations, the proper mixture ratios were 10:90(AKD:CMC), 10:90(AKD:corn starch), 10:90(AKD:oxidized starch), 40:60(PVA:CMC), 20:80(PVA:corn starch) and 20:80(PYA:oxidized starch). The mixed coating agent of PYA:corn starch(20:80) was the most efficient coating agent. Consequently, water and oil resistance were improved even with much addition of natural coating agents. We consider that they can be suitable for the packaging used in the storage of higher moisture vegetables and other food, and also can be suitable for oily fried food.
A Study on the Chemical Composition and Structure of Sludge, Compost and Charcoal
Journal of Korea Technical Association of The Pulp and Paper Industry, volume 35, issue 1, 2003, Pages 27~32
To understand the chemical structure of sewer sludge in comparison with commercial compost and charcoal used as a soil improver, it was carried out to analyse their ash contents and metal ions, and to elucidate the chemical structure of their residuals after a sequential treatment of alcohol-benzene(1:2) extraction in Soxhlet, 3% HCl reflux and 79% H₂SO₄ hydrolysis, using CHNS analyzer and solid C-13 NMR spectrometer. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Ash content of sludge was about 46% that is higher than those of compost (17%) and charcoal (4%). 2. The residual of sludge after a sequential treatment of HCl and H₂SO₄ hydrolyses had high ash content about 23%, too. 3. The sludge seems to be suitable to the soil improver because the content of heavy metal ions in sludge was near the compost and below the organic fertilizer standard. 4. Elemental composition of sludge residual after HCl-H₂SO₄ hydrolyes was C/sub 56/H/sub 91/O/sub 12/N₂S = (C/sub 6/H/sub 10/O/sub 5/)/sub 7/(C/sub 6/H₄)/sub 7/C₂H/sub 43/O₂N₂S, similar to C/sub 103/H/sub 122/O/sub 33/N/sub 6/S = (C/sub 6/H/sub 10/O/sub 5/)/sub 6/(C/sub 6/H₄)/sub 10/C/sub 7/H/sub 22/O₃N/sub 6/S of compost. 5. The sludge residual had proved to have both considerable aliphatic and aromatic groups, but the compost residual to have mainly aliphatic groups and the charcoal to have mainly aromatic groups, through the peak analysis of solid C-13 NMR charts. 6. So, the sewer sludge is proved to have a considerable amount of aromaticity like in woody biomass containing lignin.
Development of High Efficient Enzymatic Deinking Agent by Microorganism(I) -Isolation and Screening of Bacteria Producing Cellulase and Xylanase-
Journal of Korea Technical Association of The Pulp and Paper Industry, volume 35, issue 1, 2003, Pages 34~40
This study was carried out to select the useful bacteria which secret extracellula enzymes for enzymatic deinking agent of old newspaper. CMCase, FPase and xylanase activities of the bacteria liquid culture were measured at optimal growth conditions. Clear zone test was checked on the solid culture. The results of this study were as follow: Eight strains of 28 bacteria isolated from a paper mill soil ground were shown strong CMCase and xylanase activity with the clear zone test. The optimal pH and temperature for culture growth were 6~8 and 26~
, respectively and optimal culture period were less than 60 hours. Based on CMCase, FPase and xylanase activity, strain No. 18, 21, 22 and 28 which were relatively higher than the other strains, were selected for further enzymatic deinking research.
The Analysis of Manufactured Cellulose Acetate Using Old Newsprint by Acetosolv Pulping
Journal of Korea Technical Association of The Pulp and Paper Industry, volume 35, issue 1, 2003, Pages 41~47
Recently, interest in utilization plan of recycling paper have been enhanced. Therefore, this research aimed to develop the manufacture process of cellulose acetate using old newsprint by acetosolv pulping process. And the manufactured cellulose acetate was also analyzed, especially based on chemical properties. The summarized results in this research were as follows; Reaction time, kind and amount of catalyst, and ratio of liquor to material were varied during acetosolv pulping process of old newsprint. Ratio of liquor to material did not give the significant difference in reaction product. Delignification rate was increased with increasing reaction time during acetosolv pulping, but yield and degree of substitution decreased with increasing reaction time. Sulfuric acid are better catalyst than hydrochloric acid in acetosolv pulping process for old newsprint, and optimal addition amount of catalyst was 1% based on reaction material. Delignification, yield, and degree of substitution were influenced by the catalyst and reaction time. Under pulping condition of
in 1/12 liquor to material ratio and 60min, degree of substitution was about 0.7. The acetylation reaction was not completely caused by these reaction condition. The examination of the FT-IR spectra revealed that absorption band(1200
) caused by carbonyl group were confirmed.
Studies on the Dyeing of Hanji by Natural Dye-stuffs(II) -With a focus on the Onion-peelings-
Journal of Korea Technical Association of The Pulp and Paper Industry, volume 35, issue 1, 2003, Pages 48~53
The objective of this study was to find in what color Korean handmade paper(Hanji) is dyed when it is dyed with a pigment extracted from waste onion peelings using different kinds of mordant, and how the paper is discolored and variety of strength under the condition of accelerated aging test. The results of this experiment are as follows. 1. Korean handmade paper was dyed in different colors according to the kinds of mordant. Mainly it was dyed in orange-brown, and sometimes in gold or khaki. 2. Korean handmade paper dyed was not discolored much, which suggests that the pigment is strong under the condition of aging. 3. As for durability, Korean handmade paper dyed in gold was strongest. Korean handmade paper, to which aluminum sulfate, iron sulfate or sodium dichromate was applied as mordant, had poor durability. Thus, these were not suitable as mordant.
