Patent Analysis of Oil Sands Technologies

Oil sands are sands containing bitumen similar to crude petroleum. Oil sands had not received enough interest because of the high production cost. However, in the current record-high oil price situation, oil sands are considered as new sources for unconventional oil. In this study, patents analysis was performed for the technologies of production of synthetic crude oil from oil sands. The patents covered were open patents applied in Korea, US, Canada, Japan, Europe, and China. The patents were divided into five detailed technologies; mining and in-situ, extraction, upgrading, fuelling, and other technologies. For oil sands technologies, there have been steady patent applications, since the first patent was applied in 1969. The number of patents applied appeared to be affected by the variation of world oil price. The portion of patents applied in US and Canada was about 90% of the overall patents and it means 05 and Canada have led oil sands technologies. Mining and in-situ technologies, and extraction have been developed actively and occupied more than 77% of the overall patents. However, the number of patents applied for mining and in-situ technologies, and extraction has been constant or started to decrease since 2000. The number of patents applied for upgrading technologies increases recently and it shows the development of upgrading technologies is active now.
Development of Triboelectrostatic Separation Technique for Material Separation of EVA & PET Mixture Plastic Wastes

A research on material separation of EVA and PET mixture plastic waste using a triboelectrostatic separator has been carried out. It was found that PP was the best charging material to give the highest charge on the surface of EVA and PET mixture plastics with an opposite polarity. Therefore, a charger of pipe line type using PP material was manufactured for separation of EVA and PET mixture plastic waste. At optimum test conditions that used PP cyclone charger developed in this study, we could separate out PET with a glade of 98.7% and a recovery of 89.7%.
Study on Incineration Behavior of Heavy Oil Fly Ash for Valuable Metal Recovery

To design and construct a moving bed stoker incinerator for incineration treatment of the domestic oil fly ash, operating condition and moving bed area of incinerator were determined by performing incinerate experiment of the oil fly ash in the muffle furnace which simulates moving bed stoker incinerator in all conditions. Incineration process of the oil fly ash could be divided into 3 stages, every stage needs the appropriate operating condition for effective incineration. The optimum content of water in the heavy oil fly ash was found to be 20 wt% to prevent the ash from flying and reduce the volume. Binderless Consolidation of Fine Poly-Si Powders for the Application as Photovoltaic Feedstock

The chemical pretreatment using the HF solution was observed to be effective for the improvement of the compactability of the silicon powder and the density ratio and the strength of the silicon powder compacts. The yield of the binder-free consolidation process increased by 20% under a vacuum condition. In as-received state, the silicon powder were not pure enough to be used as solar grade feed-stock material. After the dry chemical treatments, a sufficiently high purity above solar-grade was able to be achieved.
A study on Shock Absorption Performance of Reused Bumper for Passenger Cars

The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of shock absorption of recycled bumper applied to the standard of shock absorption for newly-developed bumper. For the experiment, two different passenger cars which have different types of bumper were selected. In this work, two kinds of reused bumpers were tested in accordance with an automotive safety regulation to verify exterior bumpers' impact energy absorption performance. The performance results of reused bumper test show that the shock absorption performance indicated the almost same performance and similar characteristics of 2.5 miles bumper test compared to the absorption performance of new bumper of test vehicles.
Current Status on the Recycling of Domestic Nonferrous Metal Scraps

Since there are many kinds of non-ferrous metal, it is difficult to investigate the current status on the recycling of non-ferrous metals. Therefore, the survey is confined to some commercially important non-ferrous metals such as copper, lead, zinc, aluminum, nickel and magnesium in this article. Domestic demand and production in recent years and current status on the recycling of the scraps of these non-ferrous metals are introduced briefly here.
Trend on the Recycling Technologies for the waste stripper solution by the Patent Analysis

The annual requirement of domestic waste photoresist stripper solution is about 1 trillion won level (50,000 tons) depends entirely on imports for its supplies. Nevertheless, there waste strippers which contain the impurities have been recycled or incinerated to a low level of recycle. These days the recycling technologies of the waste stripper solution has been widely studied from the view points of economy and efficiency. In this paper, the recycling technologies on patent of the waste stripper solution were analyzed. The range of search was limited within the open patents of USA (US), European Union (EP), Japan (JP), and Korea (KR) up to september, 2007. Patents have been collected using key-words searching and filtered by filtering criteria. The trends of the patents was analyzed by the years, countries, companies, and technologies.
