Recovery of Indium from Secondary Resources by Hydrometallurgical Method

Indium is one of the rare metals, and it has been used mainly for preparation of indium tin oxide (ITO). This review investigated the process parameters and the merits and demerits of several methods to recover indium from the leaching solution of secondary resources, such as solvent extraction, ion exchange, and precipitation. D2EHPA has been used mostly as a cationic extractant for indium extraction in moderate acid solutions, while amine extractants are used in strong hydrochloric acid solution. Since the loading capacity of resins for indium is generally small, ion exchange has some advantage over solvent extraction only when the concentration of indium is low.

The recycling technology of carbon residue produced from the process of oil recovery in waste tire pyrolysis is significant in environmental and economical aspects. This study was done to figure out the recycling possibility of carbon residue to activated carbon. A Study on Effect of Plasma Treatment for Waste Wood Application

In this study, surface modification of wood powder by atmospheric pressure plasma treatment was investigated. The composites were manufactured using wood powder and polypropylene(wood powder : PP = 55 wt% : 45 wt%). Atmospheric pressure plasma was treated as condition of 3KV,
KHz, 2 g/min. Helium was used as carrier gas and monomer such as hexamethyl-disiloxane(HMDSO) was used to modify surface property by plasma polymerization. The tensile strength of untreated waste wood powder(W3) and homogeneous wood powder(H3) were about 18.5 MPa, 21.5 MPa while the tensile strength of plasma treated waste wood powder(PW3) and homogeneous wood powder(PH3) were about 21.2 MPa, 23.4 MPa, respectively. And tensile strength of W3 and H3 were improved by 14.6% and 8.8%, respectively. From the results for mechanical property, morphological analysis, we obtained improved interfacial bonding of polypropylene and wood powder modified by plasma treatment.
Removal of Fe, Si from Silicon Carbide Sludge Generated in the Silicon Wafer Cutting Process

In the present study, the possibility of recovering and recycling the silicon carbide(SiC) from a silicon sludge by removing Fe and Si impurities was investigated. Si and SiC were separated from the silicon sludge using centrifugation. The separated SiC concentrate consisted of Fe, Si and SiC, in which Fe and Si were removed to recover the pure SiC. Leaching with acid/alkali solution was compared with the vapor-phase chlorination. The Fe concentration removed in the SiC was 49 ppm, and it was separated by leaching with 1 M HCl solution at
for 1 h. The Si concentration removed in the SiC was 860 ppm, and it was separated by leaching with 1M NaOH solution at
for 1 h. The SiC concentrate was chlorinated in a tubular reactor, 2.4 cm in diameter and 32 cm in length. The boat filled with SiC concentrate was located at the midpoint of the alumina tube, then, the chlorine and nitrogen gas mixture was introduced. The Fe and Si concentration removed in the SiC were 48 ppm and 405 ppm, respectively, at
reactor temperature, 4 h reaction time, 300 cc/min gas flow rate, and 10%
gas mole fraction.
Disassembly and Compositional Analysis of Waste LCD Displays

Although Korean domestic production of flat panel displays totalled more than 48 trillion KRW in 2007, most of the flat panel display wastes have been land-filled or incinerated, which greatly overshadows Korean national prestige as a world leading producer and developer of flat panel display devices. Countries such as Japan or EU possess quite limited land-fill capability and have sought ways to dispose of WEEEs from environment-friendly perspective rather than recovery of valuable materials from the wastes. Considering relatively short cycle of about 5 years for flat panel display devices, it is estimated that more than 5 million units will be accumulated as wastes by 2015. Urban mining is a most suitable countermeasures against China's monopoly of rare and rare earth metals, which are contained in flat panel display wastes. Therefore, materials recycling of waste LCD units has to be developed and commercialized soon enough for economic and environment-friendly recovery of valuable resources hidden in LCD wastes.
Manufacturing of 3N Grade Silica by Thermal Oxidation using the Recovered Silicon from the Diamond Wire Sawing Sludge

Unlike the conventional slurry type wire sawing, the diamond wire sawing method adopts diamond plated wire as sawing media instead of slurry consisted of both silicon carbide and oil. Wafering with diamond plated wire leaves solid element of the sludge mostly made up of silicon, and it is not difficult to recover 95% or more of silicon by a simple separation process of oil from the sludge. In this study, silicon was recovered from the sludge by drying process and organic and metal impurities were removed by sintering process. As result 3N grade silica was obtained successfully by thermal processing utilized the fact that the recovered silicon readily combines with oxygen due to fine particle size.
A Study on the Bioleaching of Cobalt and Copper from Cobalt Concentrate by Aspergillus niger strains

Bioleaching behavior of metal ions for recovery of cobalt and copper from cobalt concentrate was investigated by employing three Aspergillus niger strains. Various factors, such as organic acid generation with fungi type, pH of the culture and pulp density were studied. The results showed that the best fungi for organic acid(citric acid and oxalic acid) generation was A. niger KCTC 6144 using Malt Extract Broth culture at initial pH 3.5. But A. niger KCTC 6985 was more effective for the leaching of cobalt and copper from cobalt concentrate. Our results showed that 82% cobalt and 98% copper was dissolved by A. niger KCTC 6985 at 10g/L pulp density, at pH 3.5 and
after 15 days incubation.
Trend on the Recycling Technologies for Waste Catalyst by the Patent and Paper Analysis

Since the 2000s, to start inducement of SCR(Selective Catalytic Reduction) denitrification facility by large scale companies which are emitted large amount of nitrogen oxides such as power plants, combined heat and power plant, incinerators and chemical plants due to take effect the regulation of stationary sources of nitrogen oxide(NOx), and the total amount of discharged pollutants, such as regulatory gradually emissions regulations are being strengthened and the expanded coverage due to the use of SCR denitrification catalyst is a growing trend. Since 2010 due to the new catalysts to replace the already installed power plants and incinerators due to inactive, and catalytic denitrification SCR waste catalyst waste as a resource rather than the development of technologies for recycling situation is urgently needed. In this study, analyzed paper and patent for recycling technologies of waste catalyst. The range of search was limited in the open patents of USA (US), European Union (EP), Japan (JP), Korea (KR) and SCI journals from 1975 to 2012. Patents and journals were collected using key-words searching and filtered by filtering criteria. The trends of the patents and journals was analyzed by the years, countries, companies, and technologies.
Investigation of Sectional Force on Increasing of Dead Load with Bridge Deck Overlay using Electric Arc Furnace Slag Sand

Electric arc furnace slag is made in ironworks during steel refining, it is been increasing chemical and physical resistibility using ageing method of unstable state of melting steel slag for using concrete's fine aggregates. Which is been changing stable molecular structure of aggregates, it restrains moving of ion and molecule. In Korea, KS F 4571 has been prepared for using the electric arc furnace slag to concrete aggregates. In this study, Electric arc furnace slag is used in the PMC(Polymer Modified Concrete) which is applied a bridge pavement of rehabilitation, largely. In that case, this study evaluates the structural safety about increasing the specific weight. The 4-type bridges(RC slab bridge, RC rigid-frame bridge, PSC Beam bridge, Steel box girder bridge) pavement's increasing the total dead load is in 1 ~ 2%. Design moments in a load combination are increased less then 2%. safety factor is decreased less than 3%. Therefore, the structural safety has no problem for applying the electric arc furnace slag within PMC in bridge.
Technical Trends in the Patents and Papers for the Recycling of Organic Residues from Waste Printed Circuit Boards

Electronic products such as appliances, computers, and cellular phones have printed circuit boards (PCBs) in common and the PCBs in the waste electronic products contain valuable metals and organic resins. In Korea, recovery and recycling of the organic resins as well as the valuable metallics from the wastes are required indeed as the most of resources are being imported from abroad. In this article, the patents and papers for the recycling of organic residues from the waste PCBs were collected and analyzed. The open patents of USA (US), European Union (EP), Japan (JP), and Korea (KR) and SCI journals from 1979 to 2012 were investigated. The patents and journals were collected using key-words and filtered by the definition of the technology. The patents and journals were analyzed by the years, countries, companies, and technologies and the technical trends were discussed in this paper. It is showed sluggish relatively activity of published papers and patent applications for polymer manufacturing technology in local and abroad.
