Park, Kyung-Ho ; Nam, Chul-Woo ; Kim, Hyun-Ho ;
Journal of the Korean Institute of Resources Recycling, volume 24, issue 1, 2015, Pages 3~11
DOI : 10.7844/kirr.2015.24.1.3
Soluble silica generated from acid leaching process is very difficult to filter and deceases the purity of products, and thus becomes one of hot issues in hydrometallurgy. This paper reviewed the dissolution and reactivities of silicates in acid solution, and the methods for treatment of soluble silica. Removal of silica with alkaline pre-treatment, crystallization to
and precipitation behaviour of silica with coagulation under acid conditions were briefly described.

Journal of the Korean Institute of Resources Recycling, volume 24, issue 1, 2015, Pages 12~20
DOI : 10.7844/kirr.2015.24.1.12
In this study, change of hydration property with contents and type of gypsum in ternary natural hydraulic lime containing blast furnace slag and gypsum was investigated. Anhydrite, hemihydrate and dihydrate were added 3 % and 10 %, respectively in natural hydraulic lime adding blast furnace slag 20 %. Hydration and physical behavior due to solubility and reactivity of different types of gypsum were analyzed in early hydration. As a result of analysis of hydration properties, in all samples, hydrates such as ettringite and C-S-H were produced in early hydration, and amount of hydrates with increase of hydration time was increased. In the case of compressive strength, when contents of gypsum are 3 %, it was higher compressive strength than other specimens. At hydration 28 days, for addition of anhydrite and hemihydrate, compressive strength was more than adding dihydrate.

Journal of the Korean Institute of Resources Recycling, volume 24, issue 1, 2015, Pages 21~27
DOI : 10.7844/kirr.2015.24.1.21
The present study describes the process of producing low oxygen content alloy powder from Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V (AMS 4972) alloy scraps using hydrogenation-dehydrogenation (HDH) and deoxidation in solid state (DOSS) processes. Each prepared powder was deoxidized with Ca contact and non-contact method to compare the deoxidation capability. It is known that the non-contact deoxidation method, using Ca vapor above the melting temperature
of Ca, has greater deoxidation capability. However, Oxygen contents in Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V powder after non-contact deoxidation method were higher than those after contact deoxidation method. Therefore, we investigate the effect of Al - the richest alloy element in theses Ti based metals - on the deoxidation processes.
A Study on the Improvement of Property of Concrete using Copper Slag and Fly ash
Kim, Chun Ho ; Lee, Won Goo ; Kim, Nam Wook ;
Journal of the Korean Institute of Resources Recycling, volume 24, issue 1, 2015, Pages 28~34
DOI : 10.7844/kirr.2015.24.1.28
Generally, when using copper slag mixed into the concrete, due to higher weight of copper slag, a reduction in the compressive strength and durability of the hardened concrete to increased bleeding is caused. In this study, hence copper slag, a kind of by-product was used as an alternative to the fine aggregate, it was carried out in combination with the use of fly ash in eliminating disadvantage and recycling aspects. As a result of this study, the mixing of fly ash is decreased in the 50% of bleeding, 5% of drying shrinkage, 30% of carbonation test and improvement of 10% of compressive strength than that of copper slag only at most.
Distribution Behavior of Ni between CaO-SiO
-MgO Slag and Cu-Ni Alloy
Han, Bo-Ram ; Sohn, Ho-Sang ;
Journal of the Korean Institute of Resources Recycling, volume 24, issue 1, 2015, Pages 35~42
DOI : 10.7844/kirr.2015.24.1.35
To obtain the fundamental information on the dissolution of nickel into the slag in the pyrometallurgical processes for treatment of wasted PCB, the distribution ratios of nickel between CaO-
-MgO slag and copper-5 wt%Ni alloy were measured at 1623 K to 1823 K under a controlled
-CO atmosphere. The distribution ratio of Ni increased linearly with increasing oxygen partial pressure. Therefore, the dissolution reaction of nickel into the slags could be described by the following equation;
The distribution ratio of Ni increased linearly with increasing content of basic oxides(CaO and MgO) in slag. However, the distribution ratio of Ni decreased linearly with increasing temperature. From these results, the empirical equation of distribution ratio of Ni was obtained by the following equation from the analysis of experimental conditions by multiple regression.
Economic and Technological Feasibility Study on Pre- and Post-Consumer Recycling of Disposable Diaper in Korea
Ahn, JoongWoo ; Kim, YoungSil ;
Journal of the Korean Institute of Resources Recycling, volume 24, issue 1, 2015, Pages 43~50
DOI : 10.7844/kirr.2015.24.1.43
An extensive literature survey and personal communication with relevant experts made it possible to understand economic and technical feasibility of disposable diaper recycling. Commercial level of soiled diaper recycling technology is currently available from a Dutch company, Knowaste Co., who owns a proprietary separation technology of the pulps, plastics and super absorbing polymer (SAP). In Korea, on the other hand, pre-consumer diaper recycling technology without material separation at its infancy converts manufacturing scraps into refuse plastic fuel (RPF), container/truck cargo boards or automobile boards/sheets. Although previous studies on feasibility of post-consumer recycling in Korea showed mutually contradictory implication, it was found out in this research that significantly positive economic feasibility can be obtained with pre-consumer diaper recycling. Subsequent recycling R&D including pre-consumer scrap and policy support may expedite 'Establishment of Sustainable Society.

The glass has been used continuously since ancient period up to the present day. The smart glass industry in which the advanced technology is added is developing. The life cycle of the smart glass is faster than traditional glass. Therefore, the basic and core technology development is needed for recycling of smart glass according to the replace period. Among the smart glass the recycling development of the automobile industry is the most needed areas. At the end of life of the automobile, the amount of the smart glass is expected to be over 23,000 tons per year. In this paper, the current status of domestic Korean automobile glass has been comprehensively investigated. Finally, Korean domestic smart glass recycling technology is also briefly introduced.

Although Korea is a top market sharing and world leading producer and developer of flat panel display devices, relevant recycling technology is not up to her prestigious status. Besides, most of the waste glass arising from flat panel displays is currently land-filled. The present paper mainly reviews on development of recycling systems for waste TFT-LCD glass from end-of-life LCD TVs and monitors and TFT-LCD process waste of crushed glass particles with target end uses of raw material for high strength concrete pile and glass fibers, respectively. Waste LCD glass was recycled to fabricate ingredients for high strength concrete piles with enhanced physical properties and spherical foam products. The waste LCD glass recycling technology is already developed to fabricate long and short fibers at commercial level. In view of these, future R & D on waste LCD glass materials is to be directed toward implementation of commercial materials recycling system therefrom.

Various waste PCBs arose during disassembly of LCD TVs and monitors in which they originally functioned for transmission of imaging signal, power supply, and imaging control. In those functional PCBs, gold and copper are contained at far more acceptable level, exceeding mining grade ores. Those valuable metals and their contents widely vary with functionality and end use of PCBs. Therefore, compositional analysis of individual waste PCBs from disassembled LCD TVs and monitors were performed in the present study to classify them into three categories: high gold yield and low gold yield PCBs and those without gold contents. Besides, additional chemical analysis was made to reveal gold and copper contents in the waste PCBs arising from actual disassembly/separation of end-of-life LCD TVs and monitors.
