A Model for Production Planning in a Multi-item Production System -Multi-item Parametric Decision Rule-

This paper explores a quantitative decision-making system for planning production, inventories and work-force in a multi-item production system. The Multi-item Parametric Decision Rule (MPDR) model, which assumes the existence of two types of linear feed-back rules, one for work-force level and one for production rates, is basically an extension of the existing method of Parametric Production Planning (PPP) proposed by C.H. Jones. The MPDR model, however, explicitly considers the effect of manufacturing progress and other factors such as employee turn-over, difference in work-days between month etc., and it also provides decision rules for production rates of individual items. First, the cost relations of the production system are estimated in terms of mathematical functions, and then decision rules for work-force level and production rates of individual items are establised based upon the estimated objective cost function. Finally, a direct search technique is used to find a set of parameters which minimizes the total cost of the objective function over a specified planning horizon, given estimates of future demands and initial values of inventories and work-force level. As a case problem, a hypothetical decision rule is developed for a particular firm (truck assembly factory).
A Study on the Optimal Location of Physical Distribution Centers

The problem treated is that of locating distribution centers(depot) in a network, so as to minimize the total cost which is the sum of transportation cost, (from factory to centers and from centers to demand points), construction cost, inventory cost and traffic increasing cost. This problem is mathematically an integer program and a non-linear model. This study avoids various inefficient aspects, which many studies have shown, by introducing a matrix notation, node and link function. An algorithm, for determining the optimal location of distribution center which has zone in which demand points are located at some node of a network, is presented. Finally this paper describes a numerical example and discusses its results.
A Computer Program for System Reliability Prediction

A computer program for computing complex system reliability is described. The program is composed of three phases : Phase I program reduces all series, parallel and series-parallel components and subsequently obtains an irreducible non-series-parallel system. Phase II program enumerates all the possible paths from the source to the sink of the graph. Phase III program then computes system reliability based on the information obtained by the Phase II program. The program is based on a modified version of the algorithm published in . An example of the use of the computer program is given.
An Application of the Inventory Models to the Intravenous Fluids Subsystem

Life and death often depend upon the efficiency of the hospital operations. By applying the inventory models to the Intravenous fluids subsystem, the Intravenous finds inventory operation can be systemized and made to run with less management effort and with far greater precision. And most important of all, this more precise form of control can help assure a greater degree of availability of critically needed items of the Intravenous fluids.
A Model to Determine the Appropriate Monetary Redress for Accidents Involving Compensable Injury to Person

A System of evaluation is developed which determines a uniform and individualized monetary redress. It can be applied not only to permanent disability but to temporary disability cases and considers all factors affecting monetary redress in determining process. As objects of compensation this model considers five factors, the degree of injury, the change of earning capacity, medical fee, job suspension and the degree of contributory negligence. For each object is defined a subfunction measuring its magnitude. Then by assigning reasonable weighted values to these five subfunctions according to their relative importance, we get main function which determines appropriate monetary redress.
An Improved Branch-and-Bound Algorithm for Scheduling Jobs on Identical Machines

In an earlier paper ('Scheduling Jobs on a Number of Identical Machines' by Elmaghraby and Park, March 1974, AIIE Transactions) a branch-and-bound algorithm was developed for the sequencing problem when all jobs are available to process at time zero and are independet (i.e., there are not a priori precedence relationships among jobs.). However, the amount of computation required by the algorithm was not considered to be short if more than 50 jobs were processed. As an effort to improve the algorithm, the present paper modifies the implicit enumeration procedure in the algorithm so that moderately large problems can be treated with what appears to be a short computational time. Mainly this paper is concerned with improving the lower bound in the implicit enumeration procedure. The computational experiences with this new branch-and-bound algorithm are given.
