An Inventory Policy for Partial Backorders Case with Interest Rate

In this paper, a deterministic EOQ model with interest rate in which a proportion (
) of the demand is backlogged and the rest (1-
) is lost. The optimal order quantity is derived and the corresponding average cost is obtained, Sensitivity analysis is performed to sec the influence of interest rate on the optimal order quantity and the average cost. Finally a numerical example is given in which optimum quantities of the model developed in this study and those of the conventional EOQ model are compared.
Optimal Workforce Size and Day-off Scheduling with Variable Demands

This paper develops an optimal manpower scheduling algorithm that gives an optimal workforce size and day-off scheduling required to satisfy following conditions. First, everyone is to have two consecutive day-off per cycle in a continuous operating environment. Second, everyone is to have at least A weekends off in a cycle of B Weeks. The model addressed is under the circumstance that the demands can vary from day to day in a weekly cycle. The proposed algorithm makes it possible to minimize the maximum workstretch and to maximize the number of weekends off. It is also possible to minimize the variance of idle manpower distribution in order that idle manpower may be utilized in case of emergency.
Traffic Capacity Analysis of the Digital Switching System

Modern telecommunication switching systems are SPC (Stored Program Control) machines handling voice, data and other kinds of traffic, in an environment which tends to be fully digital switching and transmission. The throughput of such systems is determined by the real time capacity of its centralized or distributed control processors and by the traffic capacity of the switching network. Designers must verify the traffic and call processing capacity of the switching system and check its performance under traffic load before it is put into service. Verification of traffic and call processing capacity of switching systems is one of the problems treated by teletraffic studies; teletraffic studies are based on stochastic process, queueing theory, simulations and other quantitative methods of decision making. This paper reviews the general methodologies to evaluate the throughput and performance of the digital switching system. TDX-10, which is a fully digital switching system under development in ETRI, is employed to give illustrative examples of the methodologies discussed in this paper.
Heuristic Procedure on Minimizing Makespan for Preemptive Sequence Dependent Job Scheduling with Parallel Identical Machines

To minimize makespan for preemptive sequence dependent job scheduling with parallel identical processors, fundamental results, as the basis of new algorithm to be presented, such as McNauton's algorithm for independent jobs, Hu's characterization for dependent jobs, and Muntz-Coffman's algorithm, were first introduced. Then a huristic procedure was presented applying those concepts of zoning of assembly line balancing and of resource leveling on CPM network scheduling with two or more of parallel machines in general. New procedure has eliminated presumative machine assignment using

A Software Design Methodology for Designing APS (Activity Planning System)

The main purpose of this paper is to design a simple interactive software system for planning activities, called APS. We discuss the importance of informal and formal specifications of the system design, and survey a number of promissing design methodologies. To design APS, we present a methodology based upon the hierarchical decomposition of the system, and illustrate the methodology as applied to the design of an activity planning system.
Optimal Replacement Policy for Stepdown Warrantied System with Minimal Repair

An age replacement policy is considered for a system under a stepdown warranty. It is assumed that only minimal repairs are performed for failures occurred before age T.A unique optimal value of T which minimiges the expected cost rate is obtained. The cases of the free replacement warranty, prorata warranty and hybrid warranty are also considered and some numerical examples are given.
Congested Market Equilibrium Analysis

Congestion occurs whenever users interfere with each other, while competing for scarce resources. In a congested market, such as a telecommunication service market, users of telecommunication services incur costs in using the service in addition to the price. The user's own time costs involved in learning to use the service, waiting for the service, and making use of the service are typically greater than the price of telecommunication services. A market equilibrium analysis is performed in which a method for user demand aggregation is developed. The effects of price changes on user demands and market demands for congested services are examined. It is found that total market demands may increase as the price for less-congested services increase under certain demand conditions. This suggests that a nonuniform pricing scheme for a congested service may improve the utilization of the congested system. The sign of price cross-elasticity for congested services is show to vary with demand conditions. A possible complementary property of congested services is found and the implication of such a property is discussed. It is argued that such a complementary property may lead to a cross subsidy in a market with congestion. Finally, comparisons between uniform pricing and nonuniform pricing policies are made. A specific numerical example is given to show that a nonuniform pricing policy may be Pareto superior to a uniform pricing policy.
A Measure of Reliability Importance in the Network and its Computational Algorithm

A unified reliability importance of the component in the network is considered. A measure is presented by considering the traffic between vertex pairs. An algrithm for this measure is also presented by using the factoring algorithm.
Closest Open Location Rule in AS/RS

This article deals with the expected travel distances under Closest Open Location rule. In this paper it is shown that uniform distribution assumption over a rack, which is usually used when modeling randomized storage, is not valid under COL rule, where arrival loads follow Poisson process and duration times are independent of each other and have finite mean. We give both exact and approximate methods for the expected travel distances. Warehouse sizing problem is also included.
The Effect of Short Production Runs on the Average Outgoing Quality of Skip-Lot Sampling Plan

Skip-Lot sampling plan is formulated in terms of renewal process. This approach facilitates studying the average outgoing quality in a short production run of length t, AOQ (t). By numerical studies it is found that the long-run average outgoing quality (AOQ) greatly overestimates AOQ (t) for short runs.
A Study On the Simulation Model of the Transformation of Random Variables Using FBI (Fortran Based Interpreter)

Although there are many theoretical methods for the transformation of random variables. it is difficult to find probability density functions for the new random variables because of the complexity in mathematics. The author developed a simulation model solving the above difficulties using FBI (Fortran Based Interpreter) routines. The FBI is a kind of language Interpreter analyzing the arithmetic statement in character data forms. In this paper. the FBI routines will be explained and the structure and applications of simulation model will be also demonstrated. Polynomial curve fitting method is applied to define the probability density function which can not be defined by well-known pdf. This program can also be used for instructing mathematical statistics and identifying distribution of the simulated data.
A Literature Survey on Economic Justification of Flexible Manufacturing Systems

A major problem in the adoption of advanced manufacturing systems such as F.M.S. (Flexible Manufacturing Systems) is the prerequisite economic justification process because of high investment needed for the acquisition and installation of F.M.S. While some of the benefits expected are readily quantifiable, others are very difficult or even impossible, using conventional method. Thus the investment in F.M.S. should be considered as a strategic decision rather than a tactical decision which concerns with only financial implications. In this paper we review papers on major justification techniques developed during thelast decade and identify the benefits of F.M.S. and describe the considerations in the justification of F.M.S. Also, we deal with the current and future research directions in justifying F.M.S.
A Human Reliability Analysis(HRA) for Nuclear Powder Plant Safety

The possibility of human error in operation of nuclear power plant has been proved to be one of the most important factors for safety analysis. This study established the HRA methodology according to THERP steps for performing PRA(probabilistic risk assessment) of nuclear power plants and made two sample calculations : Availibility of auxiliary diesel generator, possibility of Davis-Bess #1 accident in 1985.
