A Biodynamic Simulation under High Gravity Maneuvering

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the dynamic situation of the biomechanical responses of a pilot that occur before the black out during high gravity maneuvering. The computer biodynamic simulations using the Articulated Total Body(ATB) model show the following results : 1) the center of gravity(c. g) offsets of a helmet have significant effects on the head deflection angle which is closely connected with the head down : 2) the average and maximum gravity forces are smaller in the curvilinear type of an acceleration than in the straight type of the acceleration, and it is applied to the case of the head deflection angle. We suggest that the new concept of protective device should be necessary to prevent the head down during high gravity maneuvering.
A Study on Efficient Image Processing and CAD-Vision System Interface

Up to now, most researches on production automation have concentrated on local automation, e. g. CAD, CAM, robotics, etc. However, to achieve total automation it is required to link each local modules such as CAD, CAM into a unified and integrated system. One such missing link is between CAD and computer vision system. This thesis is an attempt to link the gap between CAD and computer vision system. In this paper, we propose algorithms that carry out edge detection, thinning and pruning from the image data of manufactured parts, which are obtained from video camera and then transmitted to computer. We also propose a feature extraction and surface determination algorithm which extract informations from the image data. The informations are compatible to IGES CAD data. In addition, we suggest a methodology to reduce search efforts for CAD data bases. The methodology is based on graph submatching algorithm in GEFG(Generalized Edge Face Graph) representation for each part.
The Storage Space Versus Expected Travel Time of Storage Assignment Rules in Automated Warehousing System

To compute the expected travel time of storage and retrieval (S/R) machine in automated warehousing systems most of the previous studies assumed that equal number of rack openings are required regardless of the nature of storage assignment rules. It is known that randomized storage assignment rule usually needs less storage to space than needed for full turnover-based assignment rule. The objective of this paper is compute the expected travel time of each assignment rule more equitably by taking into account the storage space required for each rule. First, the rack storage space is determined which satisfies a given service level. Then based on the standard Economic Ordering Quantity model, trade-off analysis is carried out which relates the storage space to the expected travel time of the S/R machine. Finally, example problems are solved to compare the performance of each assignment rule under varying conditions of demand pattern and service level.
Realizing FMS Through Distributed Simulation

This paper introduces a distuibuted simulation scheme that is useful in the top-down FMS building approach. In the scheme, we first introduce "FMS Shell" that contains basic functions and structure of FMS's. To test a proposed FMS, appropriate features of the proposed FMS are added to the shell, then distributed simulation is performed with the resulting software. This runs like a real system only without hardware devices. An real application case is stated at later part of this paper.
An Algorithm for the Edge Coloring Problem

Edge coloring problem is to find a minimum cardinality coloring of the edges of a graph so that any pair of edges incident to a common node do not have the same colors. Edge coloring problem is NP-hard, hence it is unlikely that there exists a polynomial time algorithm. We formulate the problem as a covering of the edges by matchings and find valid inequalities for the convex hull of feasible solutions. We show that adding the valid inequalities to the linear programming relaxation is enough to determine the minimum coloring number(chromatic index). We also propose a method to use the valid inequalities as cutting planes and do the branch and bound search implicitly. An example is given to show how the method works.
A Study on the New Product Forecasting Methodology

It is commonly accepted that the demand forecasting data play a vital role in deciding strategic variables such as the optimal market entry time, the price structure and the production capacity etc. In case of the new product, however, it is hard to apply the well known regression-type methodologies. In this study, we survey the characteristics of various types of new product demand forecasting(NPDF) methodologies which are useful in case the historical data are not available. Further, we explore the possibility of incorporating the NPDF methodologies and develope the unified infra-structure of the NPDF methodologies. Finally we propose an integrated prototype of the NPDF model.
A Performance Evaluation Model of AGV systems under First-Come-First-Served Rule

We present an approximate analytical model to estimate throughput capacity and expected waiting times for move requests of an Automated Guided Vehicle System(AGVS) used in manufacturing. This analytical model considers an empty vehicle dispatching rule, namely, the First-Come-First-Served(FCFS) rule. The performance of the analytical model is tested extensively through simulation. Using this model one can rapidly evaluate a wide range of handling and layout alternatives for given flow data. Hence, the model would be most effective when used early in the design phase to narrow down the set of alternative handling systems and configurations prior to simulation.
A Study on Seam Tracking for Robotic Arc Welding Using Snapshot Visual Data

A new approach, to seam tracking for robotic are welding is proposed. In this approach, the weld model is a snapshot image and the acquired image is analyzed and compared to the welding database which contains CAD data, weld positions, weld parameters, etc. This paper presents a fast and robust algorithm for the Hough Transform. This modified Hough Transform(MHT) algorithm uses the least-squares regression analysis method in order to approximate the edge lines more precisely, and leads to a significant reduction in both computation and storage. In comparison with the conventional seam tracking methods, this new approach has the advantages of low cost, continuous welding, and various type welding.
A Simulation-Based Expert System Paradigm

Both simulation and expert systems are popular ways to solve complex and hard problems. However, the results of the simulation, which include a large amount of valuable information as a good knowledge source, are not used efficiently. Furthermore, the development of the expert systems can fail because there is no expert or an expert is not available. A new Simulation-Based Expert System(SIMBES) paradigm has been constructed to overcome these problems. It consists of simulator, feature extractor, machine learning system, performance evaluator and Knowledge-Based Expert System(KBES). A SIMBES was implemented for an existing schedule-based MRP system in Smalltalk/V to show how this paradigm works and experimented for a large number of jobs. The KBES and the existing system produced better schedules for 72 percent and 28 percent of the jobs, respectively.
Optimization of Layout Design in an AS/RS for Maximizing its Throughput Rate

In this paper, we address a layout design problem for determining a K-class-based dedicated storage layout in an automated storage retrieval system. K-class-based dedicated storage employs K zones in which lots from a class of products are stored randomly. Zones form a partition of storage locations. Our objective function is to minimize the expected single command travel time, which is expressed as a set function of space requirements for zones, average demand rates from classes, and one-way travel times from the pickup/deposit station to locations. We construct a heuristic algorithm based on analytical results and a local search method, the methodology deveolped can be used with easily-available data by warehouse planners to improve the throughput capacity of a conventional warehouse as well as an AS/RS.
An Algorithm for Grouping the Machines & Parts in FMS

The group formation problem of the machine and part in Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) is a very important issue in planning stage of FMS. This paper discusses the problem of machine-part group formation. The purpose of the study is to develop a heuristic algorithm, which can handle more realistic machine-part group formation problem by considering manufacturing factors. A new similarity coeffecient has been developed to solve more realistic machine-part group formation problem. For the purpose of illustations, a numerical example is presented.
Development of control system for High performance Industrial Robots using Visual Sensor

The purpose of this study is to improve the performance of robot by providing visual function with robot and developing high-functioned controller and control program. The developed high-functioned controller and software have the better accuracy and flexibility in the movement of robot by complementing the existing robot controller and software problems. To provide visual function to robot, camera calibration, thresholding and contouring tools are also developed and applied in this study. These tools help robot recognize the central points and orientations of objects on work-bench.
Heuristic Aspects of the Branch and Bound Procedure for a Job Scheduling Problem

This article evaluates the efficiency of three branch-and-bound heuristics for a job scheduling problem that minimizes the sum of absolute deviations of completion times from a common due date. To improve the performance of the branch-and-bound procedure, Algorithm SA is presented for the initial feasible schedule and three heuristics : breadth-first, depth-first and best-first search are investigated depending on the candidate selection procedure. For the three heuristics the CPU time, memory space, and the number of nodes generated are computed and tested with nine small examples (6
4). Medium sized random problems (10
30) are also generated and examined. The computational results are compared and discussed for the three heuristics.
