Automatic Generation of Assembly Sequences

It is well known that an assembly operation is usually constrained by the geometric interference between parts. These constraints are normally presented as AND/OR precedence relationships. To find a feasible assembly sequence which satisfies the geometric constraints is not an easy task because of the TSP(Traveling Salesman Problem) nature with precedence constraints. In this paper, we developed an automated system based on Neural Network for generating feasible assembly sequences. Modified Hopfield and Tank network is used to solve the problem of AND/OR precedence-constrained assembly sequences. An economic assembly sequence can be also obtained by applying the cost matrix that contains cost-reducing factors. To evaluate the performance and effectiveness of the developed system, a case of automobile generator is tested. The results show that the developed system can provide a "good" planning tool for an assembly planner within a reasonable computation time period.
Correlated Assignment Strategy in Miniload AS/RS

The problem of clustering stock-keeping-units to assign storage locations is treated. Firstly, a construction heuristic algorithm is developed to cluster items considering demand dependencies(correlated assignment) for the case that the maximum number or the maximum volume(weight) of items per tray is constrained by the capacity of tray. Secondly, inventory-related cost as well as material handling cost is considered to determine the space requirement and the storage location of each item simultaneously.
A Study on the development of facility layout using practical constraints

This paper presents a possible methodology to develop a facility layout using practical constraints. Those factors considered in the system are not only used for the evaluation of layout but also for the search to solution on the design process. Necessarily, this method develops practically feasible solutions with less iterations since the infeasible alternative layouts are rejected by the practical constraints before evolutions. The suggested method is implemented in FORTRAN for experimental purposes and the results are discussed in detail.
Development of a Criterion for Assessing the Influence of the Measurement Errors in the Independent Variables on Prediction

In developing a multiple regression relationship, independent variables are frequently measured with error. For these situations the problem of estimating unknown parameters has been extensively discussed in the literature while little attention has been given to the prediction problem. In this paper a criterion is developed for assessing the severeness of measurement errors in each independent variable on the predicted values. Using the developed criterion we can present a guideline as to which measurement error should be controlled for a more accurate prediction. Proposed methods are illustrated with a standard data system in work measurement.
A Probabilistic Model for the Comparison of Various ATM Switching System

Recently, Broadband ISDN(B-ISDN) has received increased attention as a communication architecture which can support multimedia applications. Also, Asynchronous Transfer Mode(ATM) is considered as a promising technique to transfer and switch various kinds of media, such as telephone speech, data and motion video. Comparisons among a variety of ATM switching systems which have already been proposed will provide quite useful information for the new ATM switching system design. To facilitate the comparison, we introduce the design requirements and classification criteria for the ATM switch, and propose a performance analysis model for the Banyan network which is the basic switching fabric of most multi-stage ATM switching systems. The model is based on the standard discrete-time Markov chain analysis and can be conveniently used for extensive Banyan network analysis. The computational results are also presented.
Simulation Efficiency for Estimation of System Parameters in Computer Simulation

We focus on a way of combining the Monte Calro methods of antithetic variates and control variates to reduce the variance of the estimator of the mean response in a simulation experiment. Combined Method applies antithetic variates (partially) for driving approiate stochastic model components to reduce the vaiance of estimator and utilizes the correlations between the response and control variates. We obtain the variance of the estimator for the response analytically and compare Combined Method with control variates method. We explore the efficiency of this method in reducing the variance of the estimator through the port operations model. Combined Method shows a better performance in reducing the variance of estimator than methods of antithetic variates and control variates in the range from 6% to 8%. The marginal efficiency gain of this method is modest for the example considered. When the effective set of control variates is small, the marginal efficiency gain may increase. Though these results are from the limited experiments, Combined Method could profitably be applied to large-scale simulation models.
An Economic Order Quantity Model under Random Life Cycle

This paper considers an Economic Order Quantity Model under random life cycle. It is assumed that the life cycle of the product is unknown; a random variable. Three cost parameters are considered; ordering cost, inventory carrying cost and salvage cost. Expected total cost is the optimization criterion. We show that the optimal cycle length is unique and finite, and present a simple line search method to find an optimal cycle length.
