An MILP Approach to a Nonlinear Pattern Classification of Data
Kim, Kwangsoo ; Ryoo, Hong Seo ;
Journal of Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers, volume 32, issue 2, 2006, Pages 74~81
In this paper, we deal with the separation of data by concurrently determined, piecewise nonlinear discriminant functions. Toward the end, we develop a new
-distance norm error metric and cast the problem as a mixed 0-1 integer and linear programming (MILP) model. Given a finite number of discriminant functions as an input, the proposed model considers the synergy as well as the individual role of the functions involved and implements a simplest nonlinear decision surface that best separates the data on hand. Hence, exploiting powerful MILP solvers, the model efficiently analyzes any given data set for its piecewise nonlinear separability. The classification of four sets of artificial data demonstrates the aforementioned strength of the proposed model. Classification results on five machine learning benchmark databases prove that the data separation via the proposed MILP model is an effective supervised learning methodology that compares quite favorably to well-established learning methodologies.

Hong, Dongphyo ; Seo, Yoonho ;
Journal of Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers, volume 32, issue 2, 2006, Pages 82~90
Reconfigurability of machine tools is one of the critical factors to realize the responsive manufacturing systems to satisfy the mass customization production. This paper presents the methods to model the reconfigurable machine tools (RMTs) on Internet in response to change in the machining requirements. Specifically, the structure and motion model of machine tools using module combination rules and connectivity graph are developed. And we developed Internet-based simulator for designing of RMTs (ISD-RMT). In response to the user requirements, various structures of RMTs can be derived using the module combination rules and connectivity graph relationships. In addition, the user can verify generating structures through the control and simulation procedures.
Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows considering Outsourcing Vehicles
Seong, June ; Moon, Il-Kyeong ;
Journal of Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers, volume 32, issue 2, 2006, Pages 91~97
The vehicle routing problem with time windows (VRPTW) is an important problem in third party logistics and supply chain management. We extend the VRPTW to the VRPTW with overtime and outsourcing vehicles (VRPTWOV) which allows the overtime of drivers and the possibility of using outsourcing vehicles. This problem can be applied to third party logistics companies for managing central distributor-local distributors, local distributor-retailers (or customers), and a manufacturer. We develop a mixed integer programming model and a genetic algorithm. Computational results demonstrate the efficiency of the developed genetic algorithm. We also develop a decision support system based on this genetic algorithm.
A Simulated Annealing Algorithm for the Capacitated Lot-sizing and Scheduling problem under Sequence-Dependent Setup Costs and Setup Times
Jung, Jiyoung ; Park, Sungsoo ;
Journal of Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers, volume 32, issue 2, 2006, Pages 98~103
In this research, the single machine capacitated lot-sizing and scheduling problem with sequence- dependent setup costs and setup times (CLSPSD) is considered. This problem is the extension of capacitated lot-sizing and scheduling problem (CLSP) with an additional assumption on sequence-dependent setup costs and setup times. The objective of the problem is minimizing the sum of production costs, inventory holding costs and setup costs satisfying customers' demands. It is known that the CLSPSD is NP-hard. In this paper, the MIP formulation is presented. To handle the problem more efficiently, a conceptual model is suggested, and one of the well-known meta-heuristics, the simulated annealing approach is applied. To illustrate the performance of this approach, various instances are tested and the results of this algorithm are compared with those of the CLPEX. Computational results show that this approach generates optimal or nearly optimal solutions.
A Cost-Effective Simulation Procedure for Achieving Target Throughput of New Production Lines
Kim, Seung-Nam ; Rim, Suk-Chul ;
Journal of Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers, volume 32, issue 2, 2006, Pages 104~110
When a new facility such as automobile assembly line is designed, computer simulation is often used to estimate its actual throughput level. If it falls short of the target throughput level, then the design must be modified to increase the throughput capacity. For complex facilities having parallel processes and network of material flows, the modification procedure is not trivial. Even if the capacity of a particular bottleneck process is increased, the target throughput may not be achieved because the bottleneck may move to another process. Furthermore, each process has a different set of options with different cost to increase the capacity. In this study, we present a systematic procedure of determining the cost-effective set of options which achieves the target throughput.
Development of a Usability Checklist for Mobile PhoneUser Interface Developers
Park, Jun Ho ; Yun, Myung Hwan ;
Journal of Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers, volume 32, issue 2, 2006, Pages 111~119
In the last decade, the research of the usability of mobile phones has been a newly evolving area with few established methodologies and realistic practices that ensure capturing usability in evaluation. Thus, there exists a growing demand to explore appropriate evaluation methodologies that evaluate the usability of mobile phones quickly as well as comprehensively. This study aims to develop a task-based usability checklist based on heuristic evaluation in views of mobile phone UI practitioners. A hierarchical structure of UI design elements and usability principles related to mobile phones were developed and then utilized to develop the checklist. In order to demonstrate the practical effectiveness of the proposed checklist, comparative experiments were conducted on the usability checklist and usability testing. A majority of usability problems found by usability testing and additional problems were discovered by the proposed checklist. It is expected that the usability checklist proposed in this study could be used quickly and efficiently by usability practitioners to evaluate the mobile phone UI in the middle of the mobile phone development process.
Competing Risk Model for Mobile Phone Service
Lee, Jae Kang ; Sohn, So Young ;
Journal of Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers, volume 32, issue 2, 2006, Pages 120~125
Since Korean government has implemented the "Number Portability System" in the domestic mobile communications market, mobile communication companies have been striving to hold onto existing customers and at the same time to attract new customers. This paper presents a competing risk model that considers the characteristics of a customer in order to predict the customer's life under the "Number Portability System." Three competing risks considered are pricing policy, quality of communication, and usefulness of service. It was observed that the customers who pay more are less sensitive on pricing policy younger people are less sensitive than older people to the quality of communication and women are more sensitive than men to the degree of usefulness of service. We expect that the result of this study can be used as a guideline for effective management of mobile phone customers under the Number Portability System.
Version Management of Business Processes Managed by BPM
Cho, Eunmi ; Bae, Hyerim ;
Journal of Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers, volume 32, issue 2, 2006, Pages 126~132
Recently, business environments have been changing quickly. To establish competitive advantage, most enterprises have been using information systems such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM). Many consider Business Process Management (BPM) a new innovative solution for enterprise-wide processes. As the BPM system is used more widely and matures, new techniques and functions will be developed by commercial vendors. However, they mainly focus on correctly executing process models, and user convenience has not been considered. In this paper, we have developed a new method of designing business processes, which provides users with an easy modeling interface. The method is based on version management. Version management of a process enables a history of the process model to be recorded. In order to prevent wasted storage, not all of the process versions are stored. An initial version and changes to each process are stored by automatically detecting changes. Our method enhances the convenience of the modeling business processes and thus helps the process designer. A prototype system is presented to verify the effectiveness of our method.
A Wavelet based Feature Selection Method to Improve Classification of Large Signal-type Data
Jang, Woosung ; Chang, Woojin ;
Journal of Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers, volume 32, issue 2, 2006, Pages 133~140
Large signal type data sets are difficult to classify, especially if the data sets are non-stationary. In this paper, large signal type and non-stationary data sets are wavelet transformed so that distinct features of the data are extracted in wavelet domain rather than time domain. For the classification of the data, a few wavelet coefficients representing class properties are employed for statistical classification methods : Linear Discriminant Analysis, Quadratic Discriminant Analysis, Neural Network etc. The application of our wavelet-based feature selection method to a mass spectrometry data set for ovarian cancer diagnosis resulted in 100% classification accuracy.
A Bayesian Decision Model for a Deteriorating Repairable System
Kim, Taeksang ; Ahn, Suneung ;
Journal of Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers, volume 32, issue 2, 2006, Pages 141~152
This paper presents the development of a decision model to examine the optimal repair action for a deteriorating system. In order to make a reasonable decision, it is necessary to perform an analysis of the uncertainties embedded in deterioration and to evaluate the repair actions based on the expected future cost. Focusing on the power law failure model, the uncertainties related to deterioration are analyzed based on the Bayesian approach. In addition, we develop a decision model for the optimal repair action by applying a repair cost function. A case study is given to illustrate a decision-making process by analyzing the loss incurred due to deterioration.
A Study on the Family Restaurant Customers' Needs by Kano Model & Potential Customer Satisfaction Improvement Index : Based on Female Customers
Yun, Ho Cheol ; Ree, Sang Bok ;
Journal of Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers, volume 32, issue 2, 2006, Pages 153~162
Customer satisfaction is an ever-growing concern of management throughout the world. To find the way to increase customer satisfaction, we must understand customer requirements. Kano distinguishes between three types of product requirements (must-be, one-dimensional, attractive requirement) which influence customer satisfaction in different ways when met. In this paper, potential customer satisfaction improvement (PCSI) index was developed using Kano model and CS coefficient. Timko has developed customer satisfaction (CS) coefficient based on Kano model. The PCSI index represents how much a service feature can increase the degree of customer satisfaction when the service feature is fully fulfilled. In order to explain the meaning of PCSI index, a case syudy of a Family Restaurant is done. It is also discussed how to use the index strategically.
