Order Picking Performance : Strategies, Issues, and Measures

This paper is to review and organize performance strategies, issues, and measures for the efficient operation of order picking function. Order picking is the process of retrieving items from storage to meet a specific customer order, which is known to be the most labor-intensive and costly function among all the warehouse functions. This function is also important in that it has a critical impact on downstream customer service. For understanding the background of order picking and related performance issues, we will briefly introduce warehousing functions. Then we will introduce material handling within a warehouse and order picking strategies. Lastly, we will discuss about performance issues and measures in the domain of order picking operations. Productive and quality measures will be reviewed in more detail.
Development of Web-based Simulator for Supply Chain Network with Reconfigurable Manufacturing System and Multi-layered Distribution Center

The past researches focused on the supply chain network that consists of factories, distribution centers and retailers for single product type. This research is required because the factory for single product type is advanced to reconfigurable type in order to produce various products, according to customers' various purchase forms and time. This research is also required because in the past researches, the material flows from factories to distribution centers and from distribution centers to retailers, but recently, there are material flows between distribution centers. The supply chain network in this research consists of reconfigurable manufacturing system, multi-layered distribution centers, and retailers. A simulator is developed to analyze the material flow on the supply chain network. The developed simulator is web-based designed by using Java Server Page and MS-SQL, so as to maximize the convenience for users.
Pallet Consolidation Problems in Distribution Centers

In most distribution centers, products are received from the suppliers in units of pallet, stored in a rack, moved to the picking area for replenishment, picked according to customer orders, and shipped to customers. In some distribution centers, however, replenishment is made in not a whole pallet but only a portion of a pallet load, mainly due to the limited space in the order-picking area; as a result, partially loaded pallets occupy cells in the rack. As the number of slow-moving items increases, more cells are occupied by partially loaded pallets so that fewer empty cells are available for storing full, incoming pallets. This will necessitate the construction or leasing of additional storage space, which will entail significant cost. As an alternative, we propose pallet consolidation, which involves moving a partial load to another partially-loaded pallet in order to create one empty cell in the rack. In this paper, we define three pallet consolidation problems; formulate each problem as a binary integer programming model; and present heuristic algorithms for the problems. The average performance of each of the proposed heuristics is evaluated using simulation.
Forecasting Model of Container Transshipment Traffic Volume in Northeast Asia

Major ports in Northeastern Asia engage in fierce competition to attract transshipment traffic volume. Existing time series analyses for analyzing port competition relationships examine the types of competition and relations through the signs of coefficients in cointegration equations using the transshipment traffic volume results. However, there are cases for which analyzing competing relationships is not possible based on the results of the transshipment traffic volume data differences and limitations in the forecasting of traffic volume. Accordingly, we used the Lotka-Volterra (L-V) model,also known as the ecosystem competitive relation model, to analyze port competition relations for the long-term forecast of South Korean transshipment traffic volume.
Compromised Network Design Model for the Strategic Alliance of Service Centers and Consolidation Terminals in Express Courier Services

The express courier business in Korea has been recognized as one of promising business sectors with the annual growth rate of over 10 percent since 2001. As such many domestic and foreign companies have been established and are fiercely competing to extend their own market share. The severe competition has forced them to focus on achieving cost competitiveness and high level of customer service. Small and medium-sized enterprises( SMEs) with relatively poor network infrastructure in particular are facing tougher challenges to cost reduction and efficiency improvement in their logistics networks. Strategic alliances among SMEs may be an effective way to cope with these challenges. Therefore this study proposes an integer programming model for compromised network design and its solution procedure based on maxmin and maxsum criteria for strategic alliances. The applicability and efficiency of the proposed model are demonstrated through an illustrative numerical example.
A Study on Distinguished Alliance Network of Global Logistics Market : The Focus on Our Country's Small and Medium Sized International Logistics Firms

The core of this research studies the strategic alliance of airlines, container shipping liners, and port operators that have shown successful results through the recent differentiated strategic Alliance Network, although a difference of scale exists between these firms and the small and mid-sized International Logistics firms, but because of the worldwide traditional Alliance Network of International Logistics firms, HTFN's(High Tech Forwarder Network) half hearted attitude and the small scale alliance of the small and mid-sized International Logistics firms organized in 1998 cannot breakthrough the present strenuous situation. And these results, creating an attempt to save our country's International Logistics Industry which have fallen into depression, suggests an awakening of a new strategy based on specialized nationals innovative IT-which does not exist in the world market-by categorizing our country's small and mid-sized International Logistics firms which are active worldwide.
Framework for Self-reconfigurable and Collaborative Supply Chains and Revenue Sharing Strategy based on Trust Models of Enterprises

Globalization of market and diversification of customers' needs make enterprises to collaboration of participants in supply chain. To establish collaboration, supply chain must have the flexibility and reconfigurability, which are supported by fractal based supply chain management (FrSCM). In this paper, base on the FrSCM, formulation of trust model among the enterprises in the supply chain, and development of profit sharing strategies in the supply chain based on the trust model are investigated. To evaluate trust model, generation of enterprise's goal and its description, extraction and systematic composition of trust factors and trust evaluation are investigated. Based on the developed model, we developed the fuzzy inference engine to evaluate the trust value in terms of numerical value. And then revenue sharing strategies are developed based on the fractal concept and trust model for the collaborative SCM. The fractal concept is used to obtain the optimal production and transportation plans. In addition, the trust model will be integrated into the RS model. In such an RS model, the supply chain will obtain the maximum total profit and profit of each participant depends on its trust value.
An Adaptive Genetic Algorithm for a Dynamic Lot-sizing and Dispatching Problem with Multiple Vehicle Types and Delivery Time Windows

This paper considers an inbound lot-sizing and outbound dispatching problem for a single product in a thirdparty logistics (3PL) distribution center. Demands are dynamic and finite over the discrete time horizon, and moreover, each demand has a delivery time window which is the time interval with the dates between the earliest and the latest delivery dates All the product amounts must be delivered to the customer in the time window. Ordered products are shipped by multiple vehicle types and the freight cost is proportional to the vehicle-types and the number of vehicles used. First, we formulate a mixed integer programming model. Since it is difficult to solve the model as the size of real problem being very large, we design a conventional genetic algorithm with a local search heuristic (HGA) and an improved genetic algorithm called adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA). AGA spontaneously adjusts crossover and mutation rate depending upon the status of current population. Finally, we conduct some computational experiments to evaluate the performance of AGA with HGA.
Inbound and Outbound Truck Scheduling to Minimize the Number of Items Unable to Ship in Cross Docking Terminals with a Time Window

This paper considers the inbound and outbound truck scheduling problem in a cross docking terminal. The unloading process from inbound trucks and loading process to outbound trucks are assumed to be performed within a time window. If some items are not able to be loaded to their scheduled outbound trucks within the time window, they are stored in the terminal and shipped using the truck visiting the next time window. The objective of this paper is to schedule inbound and outbound trucks to minimize the number of items unable to ship within the time window. A mathematical model for an optimal solution is derived, and a rule-based local search heuristic algorithm and genetic algorithm (GA) are proposed. The performance of the algorithms are evaluated using randomly generated several examples.
Measure the Productivity of Airports in Korea Considering Environment Factor : An Application of DEA

In the recent, it is gradually important for airport to consider environmental aspects as sustainable development is emerged. ICAO, FAA and individual countries has tried to reduce airport noise and pollution. Thus, the effort is needed to incorporate environmental factor into productivity indicator of airport. Our paper use DEA method with the non-parametric directional output distance function(DDF) to assess productivity of 14 airports in Korea during 2008~2010. In addition to three inputs, two conventional outputs, two undesirable outputs have been considered : noise and air pollution. Results are compared from models that do not include undesirable outputs. Inclusion in the analysis of the undesirable effects of airport operations leads to greater and closer airport's efficiency scores.
Multi-Criteria ABC Inventory Classification Using the Cross-Efficiency Method in DEA

Multi-criteria ABC inventory classification, which aims to classify inventory items by considering more than one criterion, is one of the most widely employed techniques for inventory control. The weighted linear optimization (WLO) model proposed by Ramanathan (2006) solves the problem of multi-criteria ABC inventory classification by generating a set of criterion weights for each inventory item and assigning a normalized score to the item for ABC analysis. However, the WLO model has some limitations. First, many inventory items can share the same optimal score, which can hinder a precise classification of inventory items. Second, the model allows too much flexibility in weighting multiple criteria; each item is allowed to choose its own weights so that it can maximize its score. As a result, if an item dominates the others in terms of a certain criterion, it may be classified into a higher class regardless of other criteria by assigning an overwhelming weight to the criterion. Consequently, an item with a high value in an unimportant criterion and low values in others may be inappropriately classified as class A, leading to an inaccurate classification of inventory items. To overcome these shortcomings, we extend the WLO model by using the cross-efficiency method in data envelopment analysis. We claim that the proposed model can provide a more reasonable and accurate classification of inventory items by mitigating the adverse effect of flexibility in the choice of weights and yielding a unique ordering of inventory items.
Dispatching to Minimize Flow Time for Production Efficiency in Non-Identical Parallel Machines Environment with Rework

Reducing waste for the efficiency of production is becoming more important because of the rapidly changing market circumstances and the rising material and oil prices. The dispatching also has to consider the characteristic of production circumstance for the efficiency. The production circumstance has the non-identical parallel machines with rework rate since machines have different capabilities and deterioration levels in the real manufacturing field. This paper proposes a dispatching method, FTLR (Flow Time Loss Index with Rework Rate) for production efficiency. The goal of FTLR is to minimize flow time based on such production environments. FTLR predicts the flow time with rework rate. After assessing dominant position of expected flow time per each machine, FTLR performs dispatching to minimize flow time. Experiments compare various dispatch methods for evaluating FTLR with mean flow time, mean tardiness and max tardiness in queue.
Efficient Scheduling for Salesperson Monitoring System

Salesperson Monitoring System (SMS) is geographic based information system that supports business auditing, sales area coordinating and customer management for each salesperson. Conventional SMSs focus mainly on the monitoring or logging functions, i.e., a salesperson locating or moving trail tracking. However, the schedules have been planned by human planner, and they have rarely been managed with a software system like SMS. In this paper, a mixed integer programming model for a salesperson routing schedule is provided. Then, 2-phase Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed to make salesperson routing schedule. Experimental results show a validity of the proposed method.
Optimal Preventive Maintenance Period in Complex Systems in Considering Components Reliability Characteristic

Generally the life-cycle cost of complex systems composed of several sub systems or equipments such as train, aircraft weapon systems is spent much more during operation and maintenance phase than development phase. The maintenance cost for maintaining the availability and extending the life span of systems comprise a large proportion of systems operation cost. The cycle of preventive maintenance affects operation and maintenance cost a lot. In this study we introduce a way minimizing life-cycle cost of systems by calculating more reliable preventive maintenance period than the results of previous study using systems reliability data considered the reliability and failure effect ratio of sub-systems or components. We can solve the preventive maintenance period problem known as NP-Hard as quick as possible by using modified genetic algorithm than using other models introduced in previous study.
Adjusted Direct Orthogonal Signal Correction For High-Dimensional Spectral Data

Modeling and analysis of high-dimensional spectral data provide an opportunity to uncover inherent patterns in various information-rich data. Orthogonal signal correction (OSC) a preprocessing technique has been widely used to remove unwanted variations of spectral data that do not contribute to prediction or classification. In the present study we propose a novel OSC algorithm called adjusted direct OSC to improve visualization and the ability of classification. Experimental results with real mass spectral data from condom lubricants demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
Performance Analysis of Local Optimization Algorithms in Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem

The objective of this paper is to define local optimization algorithms (LOA) to solve Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) and analyze the performance of these algorithms. By representing solutions with activity list, three primitive LOAs, i.e. forward and backward improvement-based, exchange-based, and relocation-based LOAs are defined. Also, combined LOAs integrating two primitive LOAs are developed. From the experiments with standard test set J120 generated using ProGen, the FBI-based LOA demonstrates to be an efficient algorithm. Moreover, algorithms combined with FBI-based LOA and other LOA generate good solutions in general. Among the considered algorithms, the combined algorithm of FBI-based and exchangebased shows best performance in terms of solution quality and computation time.
Configuration Design of Multi Purpose Snow Removal System

Snow removal system is named for machinery which manages roads for passing of pedestrians and automobiles when snow is piled up on the road. This paper studies configuration design of snow removal system that has several functions-melting snow in the street without moving it to other place, transferring snow to the melter and cleaning road by spraying water for cleaning road. These sorts of functions are analyzed by function decomposition method of Kirshman and Fadel and, based upon which, machine parts are selected. Layout design would follow functional design to testify if the selected component satisfies space which is allowed by constraints.
