Technology Opportunity Discovery Based on Firms' Technologies and Products

Technology opportunity discovery (TOD) based on technological capability is a process which identifies new product and technology items that can be developed by utilizing or improving a firm's existing products or technologies. By taking into consideration the investment risk of R&D and its practicality, developing technological capability-based TOD methodology is considered to be important for both business and research. To this end, we propose a technological capability-based TOD method and its system using TOD knowledge base. The method can support four types of TOD cases, which are based on a firm's existing technologies and products, and TOD knowledge base is developed by using function information extracted from patent documents. In this paper, we introduce the overall framework of the method and provide application examples on the four TOD cases using the prototype system.
Issues and Efforts for Technology-Humanities Convergence : Empirical Analysis of Korean SMEs

This paper analyzed the degree of perception and performance of technology-humanities convergence in Korean SMEs. First, the meaning and activities of technology-humanities convergence were defined. Second, a survey data was collected from 277 Korean SMEs and analyzed from two perspectives-degree of performance and degree of perceived importance. Finally, based on the results, this paper signposted the important points to activate the technology-humanities convergence in SMEs.
A Comparative Study of the Effect of University Competence on Technology Transfer and Commercialization and Start-ups

The Korean government has been implementing diverse policies with programs to generate better outcomes and results of university-industry collaboration since 1990s. In this paper, we analyze the effect of universities' competency factors on the performance of technology commercialization and start-ups respectively. We employ multiple regression models using 154 data sets from university information posting system of the Korean Council for University Education. Through conducting statistical analyses with diverse data manipulations, we obtained a high degree of significance on hypotheses, and also could compare mutual differences between the effects of university competence on technology commercialization and start-ups. The technology transfer and commercialization specifically depends on professors' patent applications and technology holding company, while start-ups does professionals in industry-university cooperation. We suggest government to spur on the ongoing customization of university-industry collaboration policy, and university to properly cope with global atmosphere changing from ivory tower to academic capitalism and start-ups promotion.
A Note on the Stochastic Comparison in Production Yield Management

The single-period production inventory control problem under random yield is considered to analyze the impact of the yield characteristics on the firm's profit. We use the stochastic comparison as a main vehicle to compare the profits resulted under different random yields. Commonly used stochastic orderings are addressed with an analysis of their implications on the firm's profit. Moreover, a distribution-free bound on the profit is derived.
A Simulation Based Study on Increasing Production Capacity in a Crankshaft Line Considering Limited Budget and Space

In this paper, we discussed a problem for improving the throughput of a crankshaft manufacturing line in an automotive factory in which the budget for purchasing new machines and installing additional buffers is limited. We also considered the constraint of available space for both of machine and buffer. Although this problem seems like a kind of buffer allocation problem, it is different from buffer allocation problem because additional machines are also considered. Thus, it is not easy to calculate the throughput by mathematical model, and therefore simulation model was developed using
for estimating throughput. To determine the investment plan, a modified Arrow Assignment Rule under some constraints was suggested and it was applied to the real case.
A Data-Driven Activity Monitoring Method for Abnormal Sales Behavior Detection

Activity monitoring has been widely recognized as important and critical tools in system monitoring for detection of abnormal behavior. In this research, we propose a data-driven activity monitoring method to measure relative sales performance which is not sensitive to special event which frequently occur in marketing area. Moreover, the proposed method can automatically updates the monitoring threshold that accommodates a drastically changing business environment. The results from simulation and practical case study from sales of electronic devices demonstrate the usefulness and applicability of the proposed activity monitoring method.
An Empirical Study on the Advantages of LTE First Movers in Mobile Telecommunications Service

An explosive expansion of the use of smart devices such as smart phones and tablet PCs in mobile telecommunications service is bringing about a steep increase of mobile traffic volumes. Mobile network operators or telcos are introducing the
generation LTE network, which handles traffics more efficiently, to respond such enormously increasing traffics. Meanwhile, it is wondered how LTE contributes to raising a competitive edge of telcos. This paper aims at empirically testing whether the first mover of LTE acquired its competitive advantages. In this paper, we analyzed a number of telcos of 10 major countries. As a result, it turned out that there is no first mover's advantages, that is, the first mover did not have any competitive advantages in market share, profitability, and so on.
Optimal Frame Aggregation Level for Connectivity-Based Multipolling Protocol in IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs

When the PCF (Point Coordinated Function) MAC protocol is combined with the frame aggregation method to enhance the MAC performance in IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs, the formulae for the optimal frame aggregation level for best PCF MAC performance were derived in our previous study. We extend the formulae for the PCF protocol to derive the optimal frame aggregation level for the connectivity-based multipolling MAC protocol in IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. By simulations, we compare the performances of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs with the optimal and random frame aggregation levels. Compared with the random frame aggregation level, the optimal frame aggregation level significantly improves the performance of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs.
