Analyzing Technology-Service Convergence Using Smartphone Application Services

Recently, the emergence of smartphone foster the technological convergence. This convergence no longer takes place within technologies only. Rather, convergence phenomena happen as a form of embodied services. However, previous research on convergence has been subject to the technology-oriented studies, including suggesting patent-based indexes or analyzing technological characteristics. However, investigating technology-service convergence is critical since most of new smart services are technology-based convergence services. Therefore, we analyze the pattern of technology-service convergence which occurs in the smartphone application services. We divided the smatphone application services into four categories, and employ a network analysis to represent the convergence phenomena of each category. Our study is expected to provide meaningful implication in new service development practice.
Reliability Analysis for One-Shot Systems with Periodic Inspection

This paper considers one-shot systems such as missiles, air bags of automobiles that are stored for a long time and are used at most once. One shot systems are inspected periodically to detect system failures and repair the system because we do not know whether the system will work or not on demand. Thus, we can keep high availability of the system by periodic inspection. Martinez (1984) obtained the system reliability approximately. In this paper, we obtain the exact system reliability under periodic inspection. Finally, we compare the system reliability from our formula with one of Martinez (1984) by numerical examples.
Analysis of BMAP
Type Queueing System Operating in Random Environment

A multi-server queueing system with an infinite buffer and impatient customers is analyzed. The system operates in the finite state Markovian random environment. The number of available servers, the parameters of the batch Markovian arrival process, the rate of customers' service, and the impatience intensity depend on the current state of the random environment and immediately change their values at the moments of jumps of the random environment. Dynamics of the system is described by the multi-dimensional asymptotically quasi-Toeplitz Markov chain. The ergodicity condition is derived. The main performance measures of the system are calculated. Numerical results are presented.
A Solution for Sourcing Decisions under Supply Capacity Risk

This paper proposes a mathematical model-based solution for sourcing decisions with an objective of minimizing the manufacturer's total cost in the two-echelon supply chain with supply capacity risk. The risk impact is represented by uniform, beta, and triangular distributions. For the mathematical model, the probability vector of normal, risk, and recovery statuses are developed by using the status transition probability matrix and the equations for estimating the supply capacity under risk and recovery statuses are derived for each of the three probability distributions. Those formulas derived are validated using the sampling method. The results of the simulation study on the test problem show that the sourcing decisions using the proposed solution reduce the total cost by 1.6~3.7%, compared with the ones without a consideration of supply capacity risk. The total cost reduction increases approximately in a linear fashion as the probability of risk occurrence or reduction rate of supply capacity due to risk events is increased.
Integration of Social Media with Product Data Management for Collaborative Product Design

Social media (SM) for expressing thoughts and opinions of people in network communities can support collaboration among stakeholders in business activities. To enhance collaboration for product design, this study integrates SM with a product data management (PDM) system that manages main product development processes and data in manufacturing companies. This study proposes a text messaging SM model that shares core components of PDM systems and uses product structures in PDM systems as networks for SM broadcasting. The SM model is implemented with a research purpose PDM system and applied to product design experiments to show feasibility of the proposed SM model in PDM systems.
Comparison of Soft Keyboard Types for Stylus Pen and Finger-based Interaction on Tablet PCs

Pen-based interaction is universally available on smart devices and especially on Tablet PCs. Previous studies compared various input methods like fingers, a mouse or a stylus pen on PCs or on a touchscreen based devices such as smart phones. At the same time, various soft keyboard applications are being developed on application stores of smart devices. However, these previous studies did not suggest which one is a suitable keyboard application for Tablet PCs when users perform a certain interaction as input type. In this study, we compared two types of input methods (finger and pen) and three types of soft keyboard applications (QWERTY, Gesture and Swype) in a Tablet PC using performance measurements (accuracy and input speed) and discussed what types of applications showed better performance with each interaction on tablet PC. From these results, recommendations for the keyboard types depending on the input methods on tablet PCs were developed.
Markov Decision Process for Curling Strategies

Curling is compared to the Chess because of variety and importance of strategies. For winning the Curling game, selecting optimal strategies at decision making points are important. However, there is lack of research on optimal strategies for Curling. 'Aggressive' and 'Conservative' strategies are common strategies of Curling; nevertheless, even those two strategies have never been studied before. In this study, Markov Decision Process would be applied for Curling strategy analysis. Those two strategies are defined as actions of Markov Decision Process. By solving the model, the optimal strategy could be found at any in-game states.
An Investigation into the Measured Values of Driver's Subjective and Objective Sensibility Response Stimulated by Different Car Noises

The purpose of this study is to understand human sensory and emotional response according to car noise. This study investigated human stress levels from car noise based on the data of electro-encephalogram (EEG) and subjective evaluation analysis data. Since there are few previous works on the effect of car noise on human's reaction, more profound research about the effect of car noise on driver's emotion would be worth performing. Subjects were exposed to five different kinds of car noises. EEG data were collected while the subject was exposed to noise. In order to process EEG data, FFT analysis was used to separate the collected EEG data into
-wave. Also, survey was performed to carry out subjective evaluation. The results of the subjective evaluation were closely correlated to those found in the EEG signal analysis. The results from this study may provide useful information for mitigating car noise induced stress.
