A new method for a multi-dimensional Knapsack problem

The objective of this paper is to present a new method for the multi-dimensional Knapsack problem. Toyoda method and Loulou and Michaelides method are well known for this problem. The new method introduces a new penalty factor for fast convergence and a branching technique for accurate solutions. The method is tested at IBM370 and shows that the method is slower than Toyoda method, but more accurate than other two methods.
Representability Analysis of Graphic Models for Production Control

This paper analyses and represents the various static and dynamical aspects of the production management problems by graphical methods. For this, eight graphical formal models are investigated and compared in terms of their ability to express twelve typical features for the structure of production planning.
A Study on the Measures of Performance of M/M/s Queues Where Customers Demanding Multiple Channel Use

Applying the matrix method for the two dimensional Markovian queues, this paper offers a procedure to calculate the exact values of measures of performance of M/M/s queues where customers demand multiple number of servers. A method of obtaining steady state probabilities is illustrated as well. An example problem is also presented.
A Study of Group Scheduling in Multi-Stage Manufacturing Systems

A group scheduling problem, which is production scheduling problem associated with the concept of group technology, is studied under due date constraints in multi-stage manufacturing systems. The purpose of this paper is to develop and evaluate a practical heuristic procedure for determining group sequence and job sequence within each group to minimize total tardiness in multi-stage manufacturing systems. A heuristic algorithm has been developed by introducing the concept of relative measures of job tardiness and group tardiness for job sequencing and group sequencing, respectively. A numerical example is shown to illustrate the proposed procedure. The heuristic algoirthm is tested by comparisons with problems with known optimal solutions and also with random group schedules for a set of large-size problems. Results indicate that the proposed heuristic algorithm provides good solutions with small computational requirements, and thus is viable for large size problems in practice.
A GENERAL METHODOLOGY FOR ESTABLISHING OPTIMAL INSPECTION POLICY IN A COMPLEX SYSTEM

This paper develops a general methodology for evaluating inspection (mainly, safety inspection) policies, standard and regulations in a complex system with lots of components. Based on practically available data, this methodology enable planners and regulators to estimate the costs and effectiveness of different inspection policies when applied under different system working conditions. As main tools, the concepts of detection probability and earliness of detection are developed in this paper.
