A Tactical Model for the Economic Justification of Flexible Manufacturing System Installation

A justification methodology which evaluates the tactical aspects of an FMS project is proposed. For evaluation of quantifiable tactical costs/savings a method of internal rate of return on incremental investment is developed while for the tactical ones which are difficult to quantify a weighted factor scoring model is proposed.

Various models usable for finding desired configuration of FMSs are presented. Extensions on reported models are made and new models are also introduced. Usages and solution algorithms of each model are discussed.
A Simulation Support System for Optimal Design of FMS

Simulation is known to be a valuable tool for design and operation of Flexible Manufacturing Systems(FMSs) under study. However, in order for simulation to be useful, lots of knowledges about the behavior of system to be designed, statistics for output analysis, modeling techniques and a specific simulation language are required by the simulationist. In this paper a way to build simulation support system for nonexperts at simulation will be described and a simulation support system for FMS design and operation developed by the authors will be demonstrated.
A Heuristic Unloading Scheduling for the Raw-Material-Carrying Vessels

The purpose of this paper is to prepare an unloading schedule of the raw-material-carrying vessels at Pohang port so as to minimize the total demurrages. A mixed integer programming(MIP) model was constructed, in which only three berths were considered. For the feasible application of the model an approximation approach was employed. The results of the test run of the model based on the past four-month's real data of P company revealed the company could have saved a considerable amount of demurrages, if the model had been applied during the same period. In addition, all the processes were computerized for the clerk-in-charge not only to utilize the results of this study easily but also to rearrange the schedule in quick response to any possible changes.
A Center Location Problem on a Telecommunication Network

Telecommunication networks include repeaters that serve to monitor the condition of each line within the network, and a center that dispatches repairmen to fix broken repeaters. In such a set-up, however, a problem arises : where is the most effective location for the center? First of all, we consider the network problem in which the nodes are the telephone offices and the arcs are the transmission lines. Here we deal with the center location problem in which the center must be located at a node and calls for service are assumed to occur on the arcs. This thesis proposes to prove that this problem can be transformed into a 1-median problem. Furthermore, the transformed problem will be proven to be equivalent to the center location problem that minimizes the sum of the distances weighted by the degrees of each node.
Technological Forecasting of ISDN using Delphi method

This study was carried out to investigate TF(Technological Forecasting) of ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) by Delphi method. Since the technology of science has been developed rapidly, the necessity of TF, which can predict the future direction and intensities of technological progress, has been gradually recognized in various fields. Therefore the purpose of this study was to explore the normative statistical data so that our business or nation may have better decision-making with the TF of ISDN which will be come into in the 21st century, presenting the appropriate methodology to the application of methods.
A Study on the Failure Definition for the MTBF Evaluation

MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) is one of the measures to express the reliability for a repairable system, especially for a military weapon system. But MTBF is meaningless without a clear definition of the system failures. In this paper we discuss two failure definitions, one is defined by US Army Training and Doctrine Command jointly with US Army Materiel Command and the other one is used to M1 Tank.
The Study on the Ralationships between Productivity and Job Satisfaction in Small Group Activities -Korea and Japan Comparison-

This paper studied on the relationships between productivity and job satisfaction in small group activities. The researches were practiced with the same method which prof. Rao of Babson university et al.(1987) did on autonomous work groups in U.S.A.. The researcher divided companies of Korea and Japan into similar small groups such as high productive groups and low productive groups in each country and analyzed their degree of job satisfaction. According to the result, high productive groups indicated higher degree of job satisfaction than low productive groups. In the case of Korea, besides activating QC circle activity, it is also necessary to equalize the difficulty of the works, or to set up the pay system taken the difficulty of the works into consideration. In the case of Japan, it is important to encourage good human relationships and member's cooperation and unity.
