IE interfaces, volume 10, issue 2, 1997, Pages 1~13
The problem of the formation of machine-part cells in FMS is a very important issue at the planning and operating stages of FMS. This problem is inherently a combinatorial optimization problem, proven to be NP-complete(or, NP-hard). Among the several kinds of approaches which have been applied to solve the combinatorial optimization problems, the Simulated Annealing(SA) algorithm, a technique of random search type with a flexibility in generating alternatives, is a powerful problem solving tool. In this paper, the SA algorithm is used to solve machine cell-part family formation problems. The primary purpose of the study is to find the near-optimal solution of machine cell-part family formation problem, whare the product volume and number of operations are prespecified, that can minimize the total material handling cost caused by exceptional elements and intercell moves as much as possible. The results show that the SA algorithm is able to find a near-optimal solution for practical problems of the machine cell-part family formation.

IE interfaces, volume 10, issue 2, 1997, Pages 15~28
Knowledge acquisition has been a major bottleneck in building expert systems. To ease the problems arising in knowledge acquisition, analog concept learning systems(ACLS) has been used. In this paper, in order to avoid the overfitting problem and secure a good performance, we propose the revised ACLS, which pruning methods -cost complexity, reduced error, pessimistic pruning and production rule- are incorporated into and apply them to the credit evaluation for Korean companies. The performances of the revised ACLS are evaluated in light of the prediction accuracy. To check the effect of the training data sampling on the performance, experiments are conducted using the different proportion of the training data. Experimental results show that the revised ACLS of combining cost complexity pruning with reduced error pruning performs best among original ACLS and other methods.
An Assignment Rule for Balancing Two-sided Assembly Lines
Lee, Tae-Ok ; Kim, Yeo-Keun ;
IE interfaces, volume 10, issue 2, 1997, Pages 29~40
This paper considers two-sided (left and right side) assembly lines which are often used, especially in assembling large-sized products such as trucks and buses. A large number of exact algorithms and heuristics have been proposed to balance one-sided lines. However, little attention has been paid to balancing two-sided assembly lines. This paper presents an efficient assignment rule for balancing two-sided assembly lines. The rule involves maximizing relatedness and slackness between works. We first investigate the characteristics of two-sided line balancing and devise new measures for the balancing. We in this rule assign workstations a set of tasks rather than an unit task at a time. a priority rule of assigning the sets is proposed. Extensive computational experiments are carried out to make the performance comparison between the proposed rule and existing ones. The computational results show that our rule is promising in solution quality.
Reliability Analysis system For Network with Dependent Components
Yun, Won-Young ; Ha, Young-Ju ;
IE interfaces, volume 10, issue 2, 1997, Pages 41~50
This paper considers the reliability computation of the network with dependent components and a software system is developed for supporting the reliability analysis and improvement of the system reliability. At first, We propose the common cause failure and load sharing models as the typical models considering the dynamic behaviors of networks with dependent components. Secondly, the algorithm is proposed to obtain the network reliability and reliability importance of component. The software, Delphi, is used to develop the our reliability analysis system.
Mixed Model Assembly Sequencing using Neural Net
Won, Young-Cheol ; Koh, Jae-Moon ;
IE interfaces, volume 10, issue 2, 1997, Pages 51~56
This paper concerns with the problem of mixed model assembly sequencing using neural net. In recent years, because of two characteristics of it, massive parallelism and learning capability, neural nets have emerged to solve the problems for which more conventional computational approaches have proven ineffective. This paper proposes a method using neural net that can consider line balancing and grouping problems simultaneously. In order to solve the mixed model assembly sequencing of the motor industry, this paper uses the modified ART1 algorithm.
Dynamic Production Scheduling for JIT Delivery in a Welding Shop Adopting Batch-Production
Moon, Dug-Hee ;
IE interfaces, volume 10, issue 2, 1997, Pages 57~67
This paper is a report of a simulation study that investigates a dynamic approach to scheduling jobs in a conventional shop floor, especially in an assemoly-type welding process. We consider both JIT arrival and JIT delivery. Various dispatching rules are tested for the following performance measures; mean flow time, rate of tardy jobs, mean tardiness, sum of mean tardiness and mean earliness. The results indicate that SPT rule is the best for the mean flow time. MSLACK that we suggest in this paper, is the best for the mean tardiness and the sum of mean tardiness and mean earliness. However, it is not clear that which rule is the best for the rate of tardy jobs.

Cho, Chi-Woon ; Park, Sung-Won ;
IE interfaces, volume 10, issue 2, 1997, Pages 69~77
Material handling equipment such as container cranes and transtainer cranes have made larger and faster to improve the efficiency of container handling. As conditions of use in container terminal have become severe, and also the automation level required has become higher. For the high level automation for transtainer crane, the following characteristics have to be developed 1) Container Terminal Operation & Planning System with high efficiency. 2)Autosteering System of transtainer crane with precise position sensing system using image processing and feedback control system. 3)Automatic Position Identification System with transponder. We have developed an AGSS(Automatic Gantry Steering System) of transtainer crane with image processing technology preferentially. In this paper, the system will be introduced.
The Engineering Change Document Management using SGML in PDM
Kim, Joon-Oh ; Kim, Sunn-Ho ;
IE interfaces, volume 10, issue 2, 1997, Pages 79~90
Documents in a traditional PDM(Product Data Management) system have been managed in a form of scanned document files or electronic documents developed by specific tools. Though each tool manages documents with its own systematical methods, it has drawbacks in data search, data integration and interchange, etc. For this reason, in this research we propose an efficient document management system for PDM by using the SGML(Standard Generalized Markup Language), one of CALS and ISO standards for document interchanges. Among documents to be managed in PDM, the engineering change notification (ECN) is taken into account. The DTD (Document Type Definition) has been constucted based on the logical analysis of the documents format, In addition, based on the DTD, DB classes have been designed by object-oriented paradigms and a prototype for document input/output and search has been developed using UniSQL ORDBMS (Object-Relational DBMS) and PowerBuilder under the client/server environment.
A Holonic Manufacturing Oriented System
Park, Hong-Seok ;
IE interfaces, volume 10, issue 2, 1997, Pages 91~97
A mass production system was implemented to reduce a manufacturing cost in a way of copying with a strong world market competition. However customer's demands are changing so rapidly and the mass production system is no longer competitive to meet the demands. FMS(Flexible Manufacturing System) has been introduced as a replacement for the mass production system, but it still does not meet system's requirements. A new manufacturing system, called a holonic manufacturing system (HMS), is emerging. This paper is giving a first approach of a HMS for a multirobot cooperative process.
Characteristics and Causes of Industrial Accidents in Korean Industry
Jeong, Byung-Yong ;
IE interfaces, volume 10, issue 2, 1997, Pages 99~107
The purpose of accident analysis is to obtain accurate and objective information about the causes of accidents in order to prevent accidents from reoccurring. This study investigated the characteristics and causes of occupational accidents in Korean industry by comparison with those of Japan and U.S.A The results show that there are some characteristics in the accidents of Korean industry; (1)larger companies tend to have lower accident rates than the smaller ones; (2) inexperience is related to high accident rates; (3) 'awkward or sudden movement' and 'caught in and between object' represents the leading accident type; (4) the body sites most vulnerable to injury are the hands and fingers; and (5) 'fractures' is the leading injury type. These findings identified in this study can be used to prevent the industrial accidents.
Optimal Design of Tire Tread Pattern Using Quality Engineering
Jeon, Tae-Joon ; Kim, Soo-Dong ; Park, Sung-Ho ;
IE interfaces, volume 10, issue 2, 1997, Pages 109~114
The tread pattern of tire is represented by a great number of design factors, such as groove breadth of circumference direction, breadth direction, rib breadth, block length, kerfs, tread breadth and tread radius, etc. It is not efficient in time and cost to analyze the rolling resistance for a great number of real tread pattern, because It requires lots of pattern forming handwork. In order to optimize tread pattern for rolling resistance, the experiment is planed and analyzed by Taguchi's robust design methods. We identified the important design factors for Rolling Resistance, determined the optimal condition and calculated prediction value which is related. Using the experiment data and the analyzed data, we developed the program which could predict Rolling Resistance. It is expected that time and cost may be reduced in designing and developing new tire tread pattern.
Applications of the Time Study to Establish Standard Times for a Small-Sized Manufacturing Company
Kee, Do-Hyung ; Ko, Hyun-Jeung ; Lee, Dae-Joo ;
IE interfaces, volume 10, issue 2, 1997, Pages 115~125
The main purpose of this study is to establish standard times of several manufacturing processes in a small-sized manufacturing company located in Taegu. This company produces two types of products; single parts and part assemblies of bicycles. Due to lack of the standards on daily or hourly production volumes, the production manager could not assign workers daily production volume at the start of production, and could not exercise tight supervision. The standard times established in this study were much less than the average production times found in the daily production report. Based on these standard times, we calculated the number of machines that a worker can operate properly without bringing overload on him, and established a line balanced production system in each manufacturing process to minimize work-in-process inventory.
