A Study on the Application of Resource Leveling Heuristic for Ship Erection Scheduling

In this paper, resource leveling heuristics are developed for ship erection scheduling. The heuristics, which enable scheduling with limited resources, are composed of the gradual resource limit decrease anti the resource allocation. At first, earliest start(ES) schedule is derived by PERT to get initial resource limit. And then, the heuristics lower the resource limits by a given increment and derive a new schedule from day-by-day resource allocation procedure. The procedure is repeated until the project duration reaches at the given ship erection duration, called dock cycle. Through the application of the heuristics for real world ship erection projects, wc can observe significant improvement in resource leveling.
Resource Constrained Dynamic Multi-Projects Scheduling Based by Constraint Programming

Resource Constrained Dynamic Multi-Projects Scheduling (RCDMPS) is intended to schedule activities of two or more projects sequentially arriving at die shop under restricted resources. The aim of this paper is to develop a new problem solving method for RCDMPS to make an effect schedule based by constraint programming. The constraint-based scheduling method employs ILOG Solver which is C++ constraint reasoning library for solving complex resource management problems and ILOG Schedule which is a add-on library to ILOG Solver dedicated to solving scheduling problems. And this method interfaces with ILOG Views so that the result of scheduling displays with Gantt chart. The scheduling method suggested in this paper was applied to a company scheduling problem and compared with the other heuristic methods, and then it shows that the new scheduling system has more preference.
Development of the DNC System for SFC/POP

In this paper, we propose an architecture of the DNC system for Shop Floor Control/Point of Production(SFC/POP). The DNC system to be presented this paper retrieves line-up sheets which include the drawing information, making a index database for line-up sheets, NC programs and tool adjustment data. And it is interface with a raw material, jig and tool information. Also, the DNC system transmits operation information to real workers rapidly, and supports realtime monitoring by collecting the state information of machines directly. In the analysis and design phases, this paper models realtime events using the state transition diagrams. In the implementation phase, we use the ORACLE DBMS(Database Management System) as the DBMS and Developer 2000 and Microsoft Visual C++ 5.0 as the programming tools.
A Study on The Diffusion Factors and Policies of Advanced Manufacturing Technology

Recently the strategic importance of Advanced Manufacturing Technology(AMT) has been increased. This paper focuses on the modelling of diffusion process of AMT from the benefit-cost analytic perspective. The mechanism of AMT diffusion includes the decision-making process of individual firms. By using the model, we can forecast the AMT diffusion level.
Standardization of Terminology in Engineering Economy

It is confusing in Korean Society of Engineering Economy that terminologies of interest formula in Korean were defined differently literature by literature. In this paper, we proposed a rationale for standardization of interest formula by analyzing and comparing them from American, Japan, and Korean literatures. Twenty formulas of interest were interpreted into Korean language so that ones can identify by knowing their title.
Bay and Machine Selection for the Parts Fabrication of Ship Hull Construction

Shipbuilding process is composed of hull construction, in which the structural body of a ship is formed, and outfitting, in which all the non-structural parts such as pipes, derricks, engines, machinery, electrical cable, etc. are manufactured, added and assembled. Hull construction can be classified into parts fabrication, block assembly and hull erection. Among them, the parts fabrication is the first manufacturing stage that produces components or zones needed for block assembly and hull construction. More specifically, the parts fabrication is performed through machining processes including marking, cutting, pressing, and/or forming. When material is entering into the parts fabrication stage, it is important for achieving the total efficiency of production to select one of production division, so-called 'bay,' as well as machine tools on which the part is fabricated. In this paper, given production quantities of parts in the fabrication stage, the problem is to optimally select machine tools and production division, such that the total flow-time is minimized as well as the workload among machines is balanced. Specifically, three mathematical models for flow-time minimization, load balance, and simultaneously considering both objectives, and a numerical example are analyzed and presented.
Spatial Distribution of Mobiles in Cellular Communication Network

We present a simulation model to generate the spatial distribution of mobiles in cellular communication network. Three types of spatial distributions are considered; biased, random, and ratio-based distributions. This study also points out and corrects the critical errors performed by Das and Morgera(1997) in getting random location of mobiles. By applying a simple path loss model, the effects of our correction on the signal-to-interference(SIR) ratio are discussed. The numerical results indicate that the variation of SIR in the Das's biased distribution is larger than that of other distributions. As compared with the random distribution, the average SIR error of the biased distribution is 91.1%.
An International Comparative Analysis on the Product & Process Innovation -With an Emphasis on the Korean, Japanese and German Chemical Industry-

In this study, we analyzed the innovation pattern of product and process between Korean, Japanese and German chemical firms. To do this study, a mail survey was chosen as the data collection method. For the empirical study, 36 Korean, 35 Japanese and 50 German chemical firms were analyzed. The major results are indicated as follows: (1) The Korean and Japanese firms have focused more on the process innovation, while the German firm have focused more on the product innovation. (2) The Korean and Japanese firms have oriented more to cost saving, while the German firms have oriented more market share. Based on these findings, the Korean firms have no purse simultaneously product and process innovation for strengthening of international. competitiveness, but the direction of the innovation patterns depends on the situations of the nation, industry and company.
An Effect Analysis of Lead Time Changes on Investment Evaluation of a Nuclear Power Plant Construction : A Trade-Off Analysis Between a Construction Cost and Lead Time

A nuclear power plant requires a huge amount of initial investment and long construction lead time. As we expect that there may exist a relationship between investment and construction lead time, a number of researchers have reported that nearly a half of investments is incurred due to time factors such as the time value of money and inflation or escalation rates. Therefore, we investigated in this paper a relationship between the initial investment and the construction lead time of a nuclear power plant construction, and proposed a method for a trade-off analysis between the annual equivalent worth and the investment alternatives to reduce the construction lead time. Finally, we presented a real case to numerically explain the steps of the method presented in this paper.
Production Scheduling employing ERP in the make-to-order manufacturing system

Due to environmental change in market, delivery satisfaction to customers and reduction of lead time are critical in the make-to-order manufacturing system. A case of production scheduling process restructuring is studied for one company which employed ERP system. Based on the standard module ERP package provided, they modified and added several functions for their specific processes, and implemented it in production scheduling. The ratio of delivery satisfaction has been improved from 51.1% to 60.8%, and manufacturing lead time has been reduced from 43 days to 30 days in average during 10 months. Moreover, they achieved several side effects such as real time production scheduling and workload analysis, information sharing over all departments, and improving flexibility in receiving orders.
Scheduling Simulator for Semiconductor Fabrication Line

Modeling and system development for the fabrication process in the semiconductor manufacturing is presented in this paper. Maximization of wafer production can be achieved by the wafer flow balance under high utilization of bottleneck machines. Relatively simpler model is developed for the fabrication line by considering main characteristics of logistics. Simulation system is developed to evaluate the line performance such as balance rate, utilization, WIP amount and wafer production. Scheduling rules and input rules are suggested, and tested on the simulation system. We have shown that there exists good combination of scheduling and input rules.
Reliability Analysis of Degradation Data Based on Accelerated Model -With Photointerrupter Used in Home VCR(Video Cassette Recorder)-

Accelerated degradation is concerned with models and data analyses for degradation of product performance over time at overstress and design conditions. Although there have been numerous studies with accelerated degradation theory in reliability, very few actually apply to parametric statistical analyses. This paper shows how to analyze degradation data, provides tests for how well the assumptions hold. Reel sensors, a sort of photointerrupters in home VCR, hive been tested, and least-square analyses are used to illustrate our approach. Tests for linearity of the performance-time relationship, dependence of the lognormal distribution, and the standard deviation on time are performed. The mean life of tested sensors is assessed at about 414,000 hours, and the Arrhenius activation energy of this reaction is concluded to be 0.39 eV as results.
Multi-Attribute Robust Parameter Design to Improve White Board Paper Quality

In this paper, we analyze the calendaring operation in the process of paper manufacturing. Controllable parameters involved in the calendaring operation are the calendar material, temperature and pressure. Main objective of this paper is to find the robust design of these parameters which would provide consistent quality of paper in terms of the thickness, brightness, and roughness. We first use a split-plot design in the context of a central composit design for a preliminary analysis to find the proper calendar material. Next, response surfaces for the mean and variance of each quality attribute are fitted as functions of calender temperature and pressure. Bootstrap resampling approach is used to find the robust parameter design.
A Case-Study of Implementing Lean Production System in Manufacturing Electronic Components

Lean production system can be defined as customer(product)-oriented production system with small lot size and flow-shop layout based on the JIT(Just-in-time) principles. In this paper, we introduce a case example of implementation of the Lean product ion system for manufacturing line of electronic component which has both machine processes and manual jobs. We also investigate the issues of implementing the Lean production system with the viewpoints of layout design scheme and JIT management rules. In the layout design, we propose the cell-line which has flow-shop layout with small lot size. In the management rules, the superior cell rule is applied in order to boost the needs of kaisen up. As the results of implementing the Lean production system, production lead time is decreased from 5 days to 1.5 days and also productivity and quality level arc surprisingly increased.
A Study on Implementation of 3D CAD Library for Injection Mold Base and Mold Components

Mold base design is one of the most critical steps in production of plastic parts. This paper presents an efficient method for generating a 3D CAD library for injection mold base and mold components. In this paper, a new description language (DL)formats are proposed. These DL formats can represent the geometric feature, the variable dimensions and the assembly structures of mold base and its components. And the processes of adding the mold components and creating the mold assemblies can be performed very easily and efficiently by using DL scripts. Proposed method has been tested by implementation of 3D library with DL scripts and DL-interpreter with C language. The DL and interpreter are independent of CAD system. They were applied to the automatic mold base designing system which works on Unigraphics V15. The system is developed with UG API function under Windows-NT environment.
