A Study on the Erection Scheduling for Shipbuilding Considering Resource Constraints

Scheduling for shipbuilding processes has many alternative solutions since it has long time horizon and handles many jobs. This requests the scheduling system to generate and search feasible alternative solutions in short period of time. Among shipbuilding schedules, the ship erection schedule in a dock is the most important since the dock is the most critical resource in shipyard. In this research, we model the erection scheduling problem for shipbuilding and develop a new problem solving method using CST(Constraint Satisfaction Technique) and ILOG Scheduler. Experimental results show that the proposed scheduling method outperforms the existing manual scheduling methods in terms of schedule performance and required time.
Development of Evolution Program for Dynamic Channel Assignment in Wireless Telecommunication Network

There is a rapidly growing demand for wireless telecommunication. However, the number of usable channel is very limited. Therefore, the problem of channel assignment becomes more and more important to use channels as efficiently as possible. The objective of this paper is to develop an evolution program (EP) to find an efficient dynamic channel assignment method for minimum interference among the channels within reasonable time. The series of specific channel number is used as a representation of chromosome. The only changed chromosomes by crossover and mutation are evaluated in each generation to save computation time and memory for the progress of improved EP. We can easily differentiate the fitness value of each chromosome using proposed evaluation function. We also control the weighting factor of the mutation rate and the used number of elitist chromosomes for the speed of convergence to the optimal solution.
Tools, Joint Practices, and Performance Outcomes of Customer-Supplier Partnerships

The purpose of the study is to identify specific tools and joint practices used in customer-supplier partnerships and to investigate performance outcomes resulting from using the identified tools and joint practices. To achieve the purpose, related literatures in the area of marketing, purchasing, and management systems engineering are reviewed. Successful and world-class supply and/or supplier management cases are examined in-depth as well. Before addressing the purpose of this study, quality experts' assertions on and historical perspective of Supply Chain Management(SCM) and general issues on customer-supplier partnerships are also mentioned.
Development of DSI(Delivery Sequence Information) Database Prototype

As current postal automation is limited to dispatch and arrival sorting, delivery sequence sorting is performed manually by each postman. It not only acts as a bottleneck process in the overall mailing process but is expensive operation. To cope with this problem effectively, delivery sequence sorting automation is required. The important components of delivery sequence sorting automation system are sequence sorter and Hangul OCR which function is to extract the address of delivery point. DSI database will be interfaced to both Hangul OCR and sequence sorter for finding the accurate delivery sequence number and stacker number. The objectives of this research are to develop DSI(Delivery Sequence Information) database prototype and client application for managing information effectively. For database requirements collection and analysis, we draw all possible sorting plans, and apply the AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) method to determine the optimal one. And then, we design DSI database schema based on the optimal one and implement it using Oracle RDBMS. In addition, as address information in DIS database consist of hierarchical structure which has its correspondence sequence number, so it is important to reorganize sequence information accurately when address information is inserted, deleted or updated. To increase delivery accuracy, we reflect this point in writing application.
Redistribution and Replenishment Policy of Empty Containers on Ocean Transportation Network

Containerization of cargo transportation has been norm in the word wide maritime services, but containerized trades are typically unbalanced in terms of the number of inbound and outbound containers. Therefore it is critical for shipping companies to find operating policy such as the repositioning of empty containers or replenishing of short-term leasing containers from leasing companies to satisfy the freighter's demands of containers. This paper develops a simulation model using ARENA to establish shipping company's operational policy to relocate and replenish empty containers. Furthermore, this study proposes simple and heuristic empty container repositioning rules to minimize the relevant cost in terms of leasing, repositioning, and inventory holding costs.
Performance Analysis of Forwarding Engine in MPLS Network

MPLS LER is located at the boundary of MPLS domain as an ingress or an egress router and plays a role in connecting with the existing Internet. Among the components of the MPLS LER, forwarding engine(FE) is a key device which assigns a label to an IP packet by analyzing the destination address of its header in order to enter the MPLS domain, or restructures the cells from MPLS domain into IP packet by reversely processing. In this paper, we investigate the design of FE by analyzing the traffic performance of its components and estimate the IP packet processing capacity of a FE using queueing model and simulation. It is found that the maximum IP packet processing capacity of the Forwarding Engine is about 150,000 packets/sec.
A Study on the Characteristics of the Imperfect Maintenance Models

Proper maintenance techniques have been emphasized in recent years due to increased safety and reliability requirements of systems, increased complexity, and rising costs of material and labor. In the related literature, most studies assume that the system after cm or pm is 'as good as new'(perfect maintenance) or 'as bad as old'(minimal maintenance). But many maintenance activities may not result in these two extreme situations but in a complicated intermediate one. Therefore, perfect maintenance and minimal maintenance are not practical in many actual instances and so realistic imperfect maintenance should be modeled. For this study, various imperfect preventive maintenance models are investigated and analyzed. From the analysis of the imperfect maintenance models modeling methods and maintenance policies are arranged and presented some tables providing informations to the maintenance managers.
Determining the Proper Level of Concurrent Spare Parts under Budget Constraint

This paper addresses the problem of determining the proper level of concurrent spare parts(CSP) for a system consisting of multi-item parts under an available budget constraint. Initial provisioning of spare parts plays a major role in the acquisition of a new equipment system. Therefore, the proper level of spare parts should be on hand to maintain the availability of the system. This paper proposes a new CSP model and solution procedure that determines the proper level of spare parts satisfying the item priority and simultaneously available budget constraint.
The Study on the Automobile License Plate for the improvement of Readability in Korea

The focus of this study is to redesign the Korean license plate by comparing the USA's plate with European plate formed by 1-line system in order to increase a read rate of Korea license plate. And we have compared the read rate of the new design license plate with that of the present license plate and that of the license plate studied so far. As an experimental method (used in a precedent research), we use three kinds of methods that are the measurement of the read-distance, the measurement reading-rate under the short-term exposure and the measurement of the reading-rate when driving. First, three kinds of measurements for plates of five nations are performed. Then we redesign the new Korean license plate under the base of read rates obtained by five nation's plate. As alternatives, we choose five license plates. Those alternatives are the redesigned license plate, the present license plate, the license plate studied so far, and two types of eternity license plates made by the Korea Transport Institute. When we compare results of the read-distance, there is no significant in term of different the read-distance between the alternatives. But there is a significant difference in term of the misreading-rate and the read-rate when diving. Therefore, it is necessary to redesign the present license plates because of a high misreading-rate.
Movement Compatibility of ON/OFF Controls

Direction-of-motion stereotypes between ON/OFF controls were tested using a paper-and-pencil test and interview method. One hundred and forty eight subjects of both genders and from a wide range of ages were asked to indicate the control movement they would make to turn on the light. Stereotypes were obtained for nine types of ON/OFF controls in two different planes. The results show that stereotype for left-right power switches is right for on, and stereotype for up-down switches is up. And, a strong stereotype was found in the case of left-right switches than up-down switches. Some stereotypes are significantly different between genders and age groups. These findings identified in this study can be used to design the ON/OFF switches of the facilities and equipments.
A Study on the Decision Making for Evaluating the Outworn Facility Replacement in Shipbuilding

The purpose of this study is to investigate and to develop a decision support system for supporting the outworn facility replacement analysis in shipbuilding. This paper also provides an information system which can be effectively applied to various criteria in decision making. The modelbase of decision support system uses the concepts of the analytic hierarchy process along with an appropriate scoring methods. The AHP represents an improvement over other well-known scoring approaches since the criteria weights of priorities established by the AHP are not based on arbitrary scales, but use a ratio scale for human judgements. The proposed methodology in this research enables the decision maker to evaluate the investment alternatives based on qualitative data and quantitative data in a systematic way.
An Investment Cost Analysis of the IMT-2000 Mobile Communications Industry

In this paper, we estimate the investment cost for the IMT-2000 services in Korea. The network elements for the IMT-2000 system are drawn out and the required number of base stations(Node-B) is predicted by using the coverage of the base station. With the assumption of the 2-generation mobile communications network configuration, the number of radio network controllers(RNC's) and core network facilities is estimated. We also setup different scenarios by considering the utilization of the transmission facilities between base stations, RNC's and switching systems, and then evaluate the investment cost for each scenario.
An Empirical Analysis on the Relationships Between Marker Environments and Technology Strategy

The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the relationships between market environments and technology strategy using the data gathered from Korean manufacturing firms. As the significant environmental factors influencing company's technology strategy, two sorts of market aspects are considered; market competition factor and technological dynamics factor. And companies are categorized with respect to the characteristics of market environments they are facing with. Then we seek to find the differences in the contents of technology strategy among the companies in different types of environments through statistical analysis. As a result, it is found that there exist significant relationships between the companies' technology strategy and the environments facing firms.
