A Study on Warning Messages of Child Toy for Product Liability

Recent reports studied that injuries or deaths frequently occurred in consumer product accidents by product defects. Broadly speaking, product liability is liability which is imposed upon a manufacturer or other seller for personal injury, death, property damage and/or commercial loss arising with respect to a product or service provided by it. In this study, we want to search a method of prevention against appling PL laws. The way was researching on the level of appreciation of PL law, warning messages's means and design criteria for seller or consumer of child toys. As a result, most people didn't understand PL laws. Although they read them before purchasing child toy, many consumers didn't differentiate means of "Notice", "Warning", and "Danger" in warning messages. In addition, they considered important factors in warning messages as notice warning, safety mark(UL, etc), age recommendation and color in order. This study will be effective to search a method of prevention against PL laws.
A Systematic Approach to Accident Scenario Analysis: Child Safety Seat Case Study

The objective of this paper is to describe a systematic accident scenario analysis method(SASA) adept at creating accident scenarios for the design of safer products. This approach was inspired by the Quality Function Deployment(QFD) method, which is conventionally used in quality management. In this study, the QFD provides a formal and systematic scheme to devise accident scenarios while maintaining objectivity. SASA consists of three key stages to be broken down into a series of consecutive steps:(1) developing an accident analysis tableau,(2) devising the accident scenarios using the accident analysis tableau,(3) performing a feasibility test, a clustering process and a patterning process, and finally(4) performing quantitative evaluation of each accident scenario. The SASA was applied to a case study of child safety seats. The accident analysis tableau devised 2828(maximum) accident scenarios from all possible relationships between the hazard factors and situation characteristics. Among them, 270 scenarios were devised through the feasibility test and the clustering process. The patterning process reduced them to 29 patterns representative of all accident scenarios. Based on an intensive analysis of the accident patterns, design guidelines for a safer child safety seat were recommended. The implications of the study on the child safety seat case were then discussed.
A Study on Expert Testimony in Product Liability Litigations

The objective of this study is to provide guidelines for expert witness in product liability lawsuits. The expert testimony is one of the powerful methods to mitigate the burden of the proof in product liability litigations. However, it has been seldomly accepted as a reliable evidence by trial judges because the expert's testimony has sometimes turned out to be illogical and unreliable. In order for the expert testimony to be admittable in the court, the expert should have a thorough understanding of his/her role as an expert witness and follow scientific methodology whose soundness has been generally accepted by both industries and academy.
A Study on the Product Liability for Product Safety

In July 2002, law of product liability will be established in Korea. Therefore, prevention for product liability(PL) will be immediately needed for many companies. So, in this paper, following topics will be discussed: 1) what are product liability and product safety, 2) why they are needed, 3) why important, 4) what's the difference between considering PL and not considering PL for companies, 5 ) what are risk management methods and risk evaluation system, 6) what is SASA(Systematic Approach to Accident Scenario Analysis) method for applying PL, 7) providing a final conclusion and discussion for future PL law.
Development of a Dedicated CAM System for Human Bust Machining

Presented in this paper is a prototype of dedicated CAM system for a human bust, not a relief, machining. The input of this system is a STL file which comes from measuring machine, and the output is machining data for a 3-axis CNC milling machine with an index table. The system consists of three main modules, which are shape import and transformation, modeling of jig and fixture, and calculation of machining area. Proposed system architecture and the main modules are briefly described. To get machining region for semi-finish and finish machining stages, two concepts of machining area, machinable and scannable, were tried. Machinable area was suitable for the purpose.
Study on Architecture of ATM LSR Supporting VC Merging and Traffic Engineering over It

The explosive growth of the internet traffic in the last few years has imposed tremendous stress on today's routers, particularly in the core network. Recently, ATM LSRs(Label Switching Router) are potentially capable of providing the highest forwarding capacity in the backbone Internet network. VC merging is a mechanism in an ATM LSR that allows many IP routes to be mapped to the same VC label, and provides a scalable mapping method that can support thousands of destinations. VC merging requires reassembly buffers so that cells belonging to different packets intended for the same destination do not interleave with each other. In this study, we propose an architecture of the ATM LSR which supports VC merging. We propose traffic control scheme called APD(Active Packet Discard) algorithm so that predicts and controls the congestion of the Internet traffic effectively. We study the performance of this algorithm using simulation.
Development of Data Warehouse Systems to Support Cost Analysis in the Ship Production

Data Warehouses integrate data from multiple heterogeneous information sources and transform them into a multidimensional representation for decision support applications. Data warehousing has emerged as one of the most powerful tools in delivering information to users. Most previous researches have focused on marketing, customer service, financing, and insurance industry. Further, relatively less research has been done on data warehouse systems in the complex manufacturing industry such as ship production, which is characterized complex product structures and production processes. In the ship production, data warehouse systems is a requisite for effective cost analysis because collecting and analysis of diverse and large of cost-related(material/production cost, productivity) data in its operational systems, was becoming increasingly cumbersome and time consuming. This paper proposes architecture of the data warehouse systems to support cost analysis in the ship production. Also, in order to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed architecture, the prototype system is designed and implemented with the object of the enterprise of producing a large-scale ship.
Development of a Management Support System for Customer Satisfaction in a City Gas Company

Customer satisfaction is undoubtedly one of the top strategic issues in the new decade. Today, many organizations are rushing to become more customer focused. A key component of many initiatives is the implementation of customer satisfaction software. In this paper, we provide a case study for customer satisfaction management in a city gas company. The three issues include the plan for giving premiums and the development of a happycall system and a web-based measurement system for customer satisfaction.
An Effective Clustering Procedure for Quantitative Data and Its Application for the Grouping of the Reusable Nuclear Fuel

Clustering is widely used in various fields in order to investigate structural characteristics of the given data. One of the main tasks of clustering is to partition a set of objects into homogeneous groups for the purpose of data reduction. In this paper a simple but computationally efficient clustering procedure is devised and some statistical techniques to validate its clustered results are discussed. In the given procedure, the proper number of clusters and the clustered groups can be determined simultaneously. The whole procedure is applied to a practical clustering problem for the classification of reusable fuels in nuclear power plants.
A Robust Design of Simulated Annealing Approach : Mixed-Model Sequencing Problem

Simulated Annealing(SA) approach has been successfully applied to the combinatorial optimization problems with NP-hard complexity. To apply an SA algorithm to specific problems, generic parameters as well as problem-specific parameters must be determined. To overcome the embedded nature of SA, long computational time, some studies suggested the parameter design methods of determining SA related parameters. In this study, we propose a new parameter design approach based on robust design method. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, the extensive computation experiments are conducted on the mixed-model sequencing problems.
A Study of Measurement on the Head and Face for Korean Adults

This study was performed to measure the various dimensions of the head and face for Korean adults. Three hundred and eighteen males and two hundred and sixty females, age ranged 18 to 60, participated for this study. Thirty-six dimensions were selected to measure. Subjects were divided into three age groups - 18 to 29, 30 to 39, and 40 to 60 - for each sex. The data were analyzed ta see the differences between the age groups and sex using SAS program. Also, the results of this study were compared to the data of Japanese and US. army. The results showed that the 'ear length', 'bigonial breadth' and 'bitragion submandibular arc' increased as the age increased(p<0.01). However, not much of differences were shown between the age groups in most of other dimensions. Males were significantly bigger than females in every dimensions. The comparison between Korea and Japanese showed significant differences in many dimensions. Due to this reason, it is considered that more caution has to be exercised in using Japanese data for the Korean. The Americans showed to be significantly bigger than Korean in most dimensions. It showed that Koreans have more roundish face and wider nose ridge than Americans. The results of this study can be used to design the products that related to the head and face.
Evaluation Method of Quality of Service in Telecommunications Using Logit Model

Quality of Service(QoS) in the telecommunications can be evaluated by analyzing the opinion data which result from the surveyed opinions of respondents and quantify subjective satisfaction on the QoS from the customers' viewpoints. For analyzing the opinion data, MOS(mean opinion score) method and Cumulative Probability Curve method are often used. The methods are based on the scoring method, and therefore, have the intrinsic deficiency due to the assignment of arbitrary scores. In this paper, we propose an analysis method of the opinion data using logit models which can be used to analyze the ordinal categorical data without assigning arbitrary scores to customers' opinion, and develop an analysis procedure considering the usage of procedures provided by SAS(Statistical Analysis System) statistical package. By the proposed method, we can estimate the relationship between customer satisfaction and network performance parameters, and provide guidelines for network planning. In addition, the proposed method is compared with Cumulative Probability Curve method with respect to prediction errors.
