IE interfaces, volume 18, issue 4, 2005, Pages 361~369
Postal address information is basis for customer contact channel as well as for the postal logistics such as sorting and dispatching, and the management system has been prepared. It should manage not only address itself but also information of delivery districts and sequences. It is necessary to consider geographic information system (GIS) to be included for intuitive and efficient manipulation. In order to construct a integrative system that could manage and utilize the standardized postal address information, we analyze various user requirements, define required GIS information, and present some results of data and process modeling. In addition, we explain several main functions with screen-shots of the implemented system. The GIS-enabled system, which is constructed after this study, is planned to be used to build and manage a database of nationwide postal addresses. It would make it possible to present other postal information systems with the address information and to provide various customer services.

IE interfaces, volume 18, issue 4, 2005, Pages 370~381
This study is concerned with seeking the optimal allocation(disposition) for maximizing utility of consolidating old fashioned and new air defense weapon system like SAM-X(Patriot missile) and developing efficient solution algorithm based on simulated annealing(SA) algorithm. The SED(selection by effectiveness degree) procedure is implemented with an enhanced SA algorithm in which neighboring solutions could be generated only within the optimal feasible region by using a specially designed PERTURB function. Computational results conducted on the problem sets with a variety of size and parameters shows the significant efficiency of our SED algorithm over existing methods in terms of both the computation time and the solution quality.

IE interfaces, volume 18, issue 4, 2005, Pages 382~389
Location management is very important issue in wireless communication system to trace mobile users' exact location. In this study, we propose a dynamic location area management scheme which determines the size of dynamic location area considering each user's characteristics. In determining the optimal location area size, we consider the measurement data as well as the historical data, which contains call arrival rate and average speed of each mobile user. In this mixture of data, the weight of historical data is derived by linear searching method which guarantees the minimal cost of location management. We also introduce the regularity index which can be calculated by using the autocorrelation of historical data itself. Statistical validation shows that the regularity index is the same as the weight of measurement data. As a result, the regularity index is utilized to incorporate the historical data into the measurement data. By applying the proposed scheme, the location management cost is shown to decrease. Numerical examples illustrate such an aspect of the proposed scheme.

Jeong, Keun-Chae ;
IE interfaces, volume 18, issue 4, 2005, Pages 390~401
In this paper, we propose an efficient internet-based logistics brokerage concept which can overcome the weakness of the traditional off-line method to intermediate between vehicle owners and shippers for matching empty vehicles and freights. For defining a business model based on the new concept and implementing an information system, it is necessary to analyze the business process for the internet-based logistics brokerage using a modeling methodology. In this paper, we analyze the logistics brokerage process using the UN/CEFACT Modeling Methodology (UMM) being utilized as a standard modeling methodology in the area of electronic commerce. After analyzing the business process, we can expect that the UMM can be used as a useful tool for modeling the business process of electronic commerce in which the description of the collaborative work is very important.
An Optimum Design of Secondary Battery using Design of Experiments with Mixture
Kim, Seong-Jun ; Park, Jong-In ;
IE interfaces, volume 18, issue 4, 2005, Pages 402~411
Secondary batteries with high performance are essential in widespread use of modern portable devices such as cellular phones and laptop computers. High energy density, long cycle life, and safety are some of important requirements for secondary battery. To achieve such characteristics, a mixing proportion of electrolyte solution ingredients in the battery should be carefully chosen. In this paper, using statistical design of mixture experiments (DOME), we attempt to find an optimum condition of designing the secondary battery. DOME has a distinct feature in that the experimental region is represented by simplex, rather than hypercube, because the sum of blend proportions should be unity. Several designs based upon this point have been proposed for mixture experiments. Among them, an extreme vertices design is employed in this paper because there are a couple of blend constraints to be considered. In order to investigate how the mixing proportion interacts with other manufacturing factors, a fractional factorial design is also included across the extreme vertices design. As a result, we find that the blend proportion of solution ingredients has a significant effect on battery performances. By simultaneously optimizing two battery capacities, this paper proposes an optimum blend proportion according to process factor settings.

IE interfaces, volume 18, issue 4, 2005, Pages 418~430
We establish an efficient strategy for construction and operation of data consolidation center for multi-organization in public sector. First, we introduce important concepts on data consolidation center in public sector, and draw some success factors by analyzing several foreign and domestic cases. Second, we construct all the possible logical operational models of the center and investigate the properties and feasibility of the models. Third, we suggest a virtual operational environment for the two representative models selected by feasibility criteria among the possible logical models, and compare the two models in terms of operational cost. We also utilize AHP methodology to evaluate qualitative opinions on the two models from several experts in public information systems. As a result, we find the best alternative is the case in which all infrastructure and facilities for the center are provided by government, and common essential IT operations are integrated, associated data are consolidated and the whole operational work are outsourced to specialized IT operations service providers.

This paper describes a web-based system called DESIGNER for the analysis and design for automated material handling equipment(MHE) applications in manufacturing. DESIGNER models the processes for system integration, economic analysis, performance analysis, and automated storage/retrieval system(AS/RS) design. Based on the information specified by users, the various analysis modules are invoked to meet the needs of the material handling applications. The results of the analyses provide system users with useful data for material handling system design and decision on investment in automated MHE. Example problems are also presented to demonstrate the use of the system.
A Study of Gage R&R Analysis Considering the Variations of Between-Within Group and Within Part
Lee, Seung-Hoon ; Lee, Chang-Woo ;
IE interfaces, volume 18, issue 4, 2005, Pages 444~453
The purpose of the Gage R&R study is to determine whether a measurement system is adequate for monitoring a process. If the measurement system variation is small relative to the process variation, then the measurement system is deemed "adequate". The sources of variation associated with the measurement system are compared using an analysis of variance (ANOVA) model, in general. A typical ANOVA model used in a standard Gage R&R study is the two-factor random effect model. Then, the ANOVA partitions the total variation into three categories: repeatability, reproducibility, part variation. However, if the process variation possesses the between group variation, within group variation, and within part variation, these variations can cause the measurement system evaluation to provide misleading results. That is, in the standard Gage R&R study these variations affect the estimate of repeatability, reproducibility, or both. This paper presents a four-factor nested factorial ANOVA model which explicitly considers these variations for the Gage R&R study. The variance component estimators are derived by setting the EMS equations equal to the corresponding mean square from the ANOVA table and solving. And the proposed model is compared with the standard Gage R&R model.

IE interfaces, volume 18, issue 4, 2005, Pages 454~464
In Postal logistics, the efficient design and operation of transportation network is very important issue. But, it is hard to operate the postal transportation network flexibly according to the change of mail volume. In Korea post, a transportation plan is pre-determined and the transportation of mail is performed through the routes in the plan. When the routes cannot transport all mail, temporary vehicles are used. In the postal transportation, it is important to make a good transportation plan and to manage the plan efficiently. But the change of transportation plan is not a simple work because hundreds of vehicles and persons are related to the plan. So, a methodology to check the effect of the change of the transportation plan in advance is required. In this paper, we develop a simulation model to evaluate the performance of a postal transportation plan. We implement the simulation model and develop an information system including user interface for managing data and simulation results. We apply our simulation model and system to the real change of transportation plan.

IE interfaces, volume 18, issue 4, 2005, Pages 465~476
Evolutionary operation is a useful tool for improving full-scale manufacturing process by systematically changing the levels of the process variables without jeopardizing the product. This paper presents a system design for the evolutionary operation software called 'evolutionary optimizer'. Evolutionary optimizer consists of four modules: factorial design, many variables, mixture, and mean/dispersion. Context diagram, data flow diagram and entity-relationship modelling are used to systematically design the evolutionary optimizer system.

Han, Seok-Youn ; Hong, Soon-Ki ; Ha, Chen-Soo ;
IE interfaces, volume 18, issue 4, 2005, Pages 477~484
This paper is concerned with the life-cycle cost(LCC) of the urban transit system which was developed by KRRI and is now under test in Gyeongsan, Korea. Its reliability, availability and maintainability(RAM) were analyzed. LCC is the core part of analyzing the total cost of acquisition and ownership of a system. LCC analysis of a system is the most effective when it is applied in the it's early design phase. In this paper, we present IEC 60300-3-3(Life Cycle Costing) in detail and propose how to apply LCC in assessing the urban transit system according to RAM process. This case study demonstrates that reliability management system is very effective in reducing the operating cost of subway corporations in Korea.

Shin, Hyun-Bong ; Jung, Kwang-Tae ;
IE interfaces, volume 18, issue 4, 2005, Pages 485~493
In this study, a method that can objectively and systematically design the layout of user interface components was developed. In order to explain its application method, the method was applied to the layout design of facsimile. In particular, in order to validate the suitability of the method, comparison tests were performed for the case of facsimile. Computer simulators for layout design were made using Micromedia Flash and comparison evaluation for an existing layout and a new layout was performed in three aspects. The first comparison method was to measure and compare its movement distance when carrying out a task in two layout models. The second one was to measure and compare users' performance. The last one was to measure and compare users' subjective satisfaction after using two models. As the result, new layout design was better than the existing design in all comparison tests. The movement distance of the new layout design model was shorter than the existing model. And, its performance including task completion time and error frequency was better and users' satisfaction was higher than the existing. In conclusion, the method that was developed in this study can be very effectively used in the layout design of user interface components.
Performance Analysis of the Multiplexer for Shaped Video Traffic Sources
Lee, S.C. ; Hong, J.W. ; Kim, C.S. ;
IE interfaces, volume 18, issue 4, 2005, Pages 494~503
This paper considers the problem of performance analysis for the multiplexer, when homogeneous periodic on-off sources are statistically multiplexed. Periodic on-off source model is defined that on-period and off-period are repeated by once in a deterministic periodic time and in on-period, cell arrives with deterministic time interval. In order to reflect periodicity of source model, we consider two multiplexing situation, such as random multiplexing and synchronized multiplexing. In both case, we obtain the overload-period distribution in the multiplexer, and an approximate method using the overload period distribution is suggested for obtaining the CLP(Cell Loss Probability) in the buffer of the multiplexer. A numerical example using MPEG-I real traffic samples and the results are also presented.
Hybrid Genetic and Local Search (HGLS) Algorithm for Channel Assignment in FDMA Wireless Communication Network
Kim, Sung-Soo ; Min, Seung-Ki ;
IE interfaces, volume 18, issue 4, 2005, Pages 504~511
The NP-hard channel assignment problem becomes more and more important to use channels as efficiently as possible because there is a rapidly growing demand and the number of usable channel is very limited. The hybrid genetic and local search (HGLS) method in this paper is a hybrid method of genetic algorithm with no interference channel assignment (NICA) in clustering stage for diversified search and local search in tuning stage when the step of search is near convergence for minimizing blocking calls. The new representation of solution is also proposed for effective search and computation for channel assignment.
