IE interfaces, volume 19, issue 3, 2006, Pages 174~180
This paper deals with the robot system of recognizing human's expression from a detected human's face and then showing human's emotion. A face detection method is as follows. First, change RGB color space to CIElab color space. Second, extract skin candidate territory. Third, detect a face through facial geometrical interrelation by face filter. Then, the position of eyes, a nose and a mouth which are used as the preliminary data of expression, he uses eyebrows, eyes and a mouth. In this paper, the change of eyebrows and are sent to a robot through serial communication. Then the robot operates a motor that is installed and shows human's expression. Experimental results on 10 Persons show 78.15% accuracy.
RFID Applications in Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)
Jun, Hong-Bae ;
IE interfaces, volume 19, issue 3, 2006, Pages 181~189
This study introduces an overall framework for RFID applications in product lifecycle management(PLM). PLM is a new strategic approach to manage product related information efficiently over the whole product lifecycle. Recently, with emerging technologies such as radio frequency identification(RFID), global positioning system(GPS), and wireless communication, PLM provides a new environment that enables us to gather and analyze product lifecycle information, and make decisions on several issues without spatial and temporal constrains. However, a PLM system just provides us with new opportunities to gain the PLM system, first and foremost, it is necessary to look into its overall framework in the viewpoint of hardware, software, and business model. For this purpose, in this study, first, we introduce the technical framework of the new PLM environment with the concept of extended RFID system, called product embedded information device(PEID). Then, for each lifecycle phase such as beginning of life(BOL), middle of life(MOL), and end of life(EOL), we explore several research problems that become highlighted under the new PLM environment.

With the rapid growth in the demand and supply of web service, the search for superior services has become a prominent issue. Furthermore, much emphasis and attention are being placed on composite web services, where individual services are combined together to form a single workflow to satisfy the demand of the customers. In today's era of excessive expansion of web services, this study intends to propose the execution plan architecture for composite web services to accomplish the following three goals. The first goal is to derive a feasible plan which maximize user satisfaction for composite web services by implementing an execution plan architecture that reflects the Quality of Service criteria. Secondly, this study also aims at analyzing and selecting the indexes that adequately reflects its quality and its nonfunctional property. Finally, this study intends to apply the concept of constraint satisfaction problem and heuristics to reduce the execution duration of the process.

IE interfaces, volume 19, issue 3, 2006, Pages 202~213
In this paper, we develop a planning system for the routing and scheduling of vehicles in pickup and delivery service such as door-to-door parcel service. Efficient routing and scheduling of vehicles is very important in pickup and delivery service. The routing and scheduling problem is a variation of vehicle routing problem which has various realistic constraints. We develop a heuristic algorithm based on tabu search to solve the routing and scheduling problem. We develop a routing and scheduling system installed the algorithm as a planning engine. The system manage the basic data and uses GIS data to make a realistic route plan.
Evaluation Models for the Container Handling Times of the Automated Transfer Crane in Container Terminals
Kim, Ki-Young ;
IE interfaces, volume 19, issue 3, 2006, Pages 214~224
The container handling times of automated transfer cranes(ATCs) significantly affect the productivity of container terminals. In this paper, evaluation models for the container handling times of ATCs are suggested for import container blocks with different transfer point configurations. Firstly, evaluation models for various motion times of stacking and retrieving operations of ATC are suggested for two basic alternatives of import container blocks. In addition, in considering the space allocation, evaluation methods for the container handling times of ATC are suggested. Finally, the container handling times for each case are compared with each other in order to analyze how the block shape and the transfer point locations affect the container handling times of ATC.
Buyer Category-Based Intelligent e-Commerce Meta-Search Engine
Kim, Kyung-Pil ; Woo, Sang-Hoon ; Kim, Chang-Ouk ;
IE interfaces, volume 19, issue 3, 2006, Pages 225~235
In this paper, we propose an intelligent e-commerce meta-search engine which integrates distributed e-commerce sites and provides a unified search to the sites. The meta-search engine performs the following functions: (1) the user is able to create a category-based user query, (2) by using the WordNet, the query is semantically refined for increasing search accuracy, and (3) the meta-search engine recommends an e-commerce site which has the closest product information to the user’s search intention by matching the user query with the product catalogs in the e-commerce sites linked to the meta-search engine. An experiment shows that the performance of our model is better than that of general keyword-based search.

Postal code is essential for improving efficiency of mail sorting. The Korean postal code, which is introduced in 1970 and had been reformed two times, has controversial issues because of changed postal environments such as modification of administrative districts and logistical transformation into a hub-and-spokes structure. In this study, we propose several improvement and evaluation methods in order to prepare an alternative plan of postal code system. After performing status analysis, we define the customers of postal code and analyze the requirements of them. The 6 proposed new postal code systems are based on each customer groups’ requirements. To evaluate the new systems, we develop several quantitative and qualitative indexes and make a survey of postal experts. Besides, we evaluate the influence of them to the postal environments including delivery sequence sorting process.

IE interfaces, volume 19, issue 3, 2006, Pages 245~254
Equipments in container terminal have a lot of parts, and an equipment breakdown affects the productivity of terminal. In this paper, we develop a maintenance management system for improving reliability, availability and maintainability of equipments in container terminals. The developed system consists of five modules : equipment structure module, equipment operation management module, maintenance control module, spare part control module and data analysis module. The system supports reliability engineers to manage and improve RAM of equipments in container terminals. For example, FMEA, failure state analysis and life distribution parameters estimation are easily or automatically done by the system. This system also provides optimal preventive maintenance intervals by simulation and optimal yearly PM schedules for equipments in container terminal are recommended.

IE interfaces, volume 19, issue 3, 2006, Pages 255~269
Digital manufacturing(DM) is the ability to describe every aspect of the design-to-manufacture process digitally-using tools that include digital design, CAD, office documents, PLM(Product Life-cycle Management) systems, analysis software, simulation, CAM software and so on. The major automotive companies are already deeply invested in DM with almost every process being digital rather than paper-based. But it has taken a long time for the digital process to mature into something usable and there have been some major barriers that have prevented from the DM becoming a reality. Thus many companies hesitate to make a decision of implementing the DM. This paper deals with a study investigating which factors are important for implementing the DM to industries successfully. The extended technology acceptance model (ETAM) is used as the relation model of cause and effect. The quality of hardware, the quality of software, the range of collaboration among companies and the preference of the user are defined as the external factors. Interview method is used for gathering input data, and the results are analyzed with SPSS. The results indicate that four external factors are effective on the successful implementation of DM, and the perceived usefulness is most important.
