A Study on the Optimization of Stowage Planning for Container Terminal Considered by Hatch
Lee, Sang-Heon ; Kim, Moon-Gyu ; Ahn, Tae-Ho ;
IE interfaces, volume 19, issue 4, 2006, Pages 270~280
The shipping plan for an efficient augmentation of terminal is NP-hard problem which is subordinate to a shipping quantity. The load location problem and stowage planning problem are two important tactical problems for the efficient operations of container terminals. This paper is concerned with reduction of feasible region in constraints for stowage planning. After designing model which minimizes the number of shifting and the travel distance of the transfer crane, the simulated annealing algorithm is employed to search optimal solution quickly and accurately. In order to apply more realistic approach, the partial restriction through adding hatch is complemented to stowage planning decision problem applied in cluster. A variety of numerical experiments demonstrated that solutions by simulated annealing algorithm are useful and applicable in practice.
Transition Structure to Changes in Efficiency and Pattern of Technological Progress by Industries through Development of Patent Mapping Model
Park, Joon-Ho ; Kwon, Cheol-Shin ;
IE interfaces, volume 19, issue 4, 2006, Pages 281~290
The main objective of this study is to analyze the structure of efficiency of R&D input variables and the attributes of patent information as output of R&D activities in the major manufacturing industries (electric & electronics, machinery, chemical, textile) from the mid-1970s to the late-1990s by the development of "mapping technique". To attain this objective we first have examined the attribute of time-lag which depends on the absolute, and the cumulative values between input and output. And on the basis of this result, we have made an analysis on the impact to extract the main variables affecting patent by industries. Moreover, according to time trend of the impact variables, we have analyzed the structure of R&D efficiency, and of technological progress which will be changed with time by patent information. It has been aimed at constructing technological progress patterns in the Korea industry.
Assessment of Ammunition Companies Using the IDEA Model

IE interfaces, volume 19, issue 4, 2006, Pages 291~299
In order to enhance sustainable war fighting capabilities, it is important to maintain a good ammunition support system. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of ammunition companies using Imprecise Data Envelopment Analysis (IDEA)-BCC and IDEA-Additive model, which can deal with imprecise data in DEA. The input variables of IDEA models were selected by stepwise multiple regression analysis. With the regression model, we could choose the number of soldiers, officers, and ammunition warehouses as input variables that have significant effects on the output performance. Then, we applied the IDEA-BCC model with the concept of potential efficiency. The results of the model indicate that 8 out of 16 ammunition companies are efficient, 7 are inefficient, and 1 is potentially efficient. We could also identify the possible input excesses and output shortfalls to reach the efficient frontier using the IDEA-Additive model.

IE interfaces, volume 19, issue 4, 2006, Pages 300~305
The problem of assigning customers to satellite channels is considered in this paper. Finding an optimal allocation of customers to satellite channels is a difficult combinatorial optimization problem and is shown to be NP-complete in an earlier study. We propose a genetic algorithm (GA) approach to search for the best/optimal assignment of customers to satellite channels. Various issues related to genetic algorithms such as solution representation, selection methods, genetic operators and repair of invalid solutions are presented. A comparison of GA with CPLEX8.1 is presented to show the advantages of this approach in terms of computation time and solution quality.
The Analysis of the Level of Technological Maturity for the u-Learning of Public Education by Mobile Phone
Lee, Jae-Won ; Na, Eun-Gu ; Song, Gil-Ju ;
IE interfaces, volume 19, issue 4, 2006, Pages 306~315
In this paper we analyze whether we can use the mobile phone having been highly distributed into young generation as a device for the u-learning in Korean public education. For this purpose we deal with the technical maturity in three axes. Firstly, we examine the authoring nature of mobile internet-based contents such as both text and motion picture for the contents developers in the public education. As a research result the authoring of text has almost no difficulty, but that of the motion picture shows some problems. Secondly, we deal with whether u-learners can easily get and use u-contents on both mobile phone and PC respectively. After analysing this factor, we found that the downloading of motion picture contents into mobile phone is very limited. Therfore we talk about the usability and problem of various PC Sync tools and propose their standardization. Finally, the needs of the introduction of the ubiquitous SCORM which could enable to reuse u-contents among different Korean telco’s mobile phones are discussed. Here we describe some functionality of both ubiquitous SCORM and u-LMS. Our study looks like almost the first work examining the technological maturity for the introduction of u-learning with mobile phone in Korean public education and it could be used as a reference for the study of any other wireless telecommunication-based u-learning other than mobile telecommunication.
An Analysis of Grinding Effects and Economic Life of Cutting Tool with Proportional Age Reduction Model

IE interfaces, volume 19, issue 4, 2006, Pages 316~323
In this study, based on Weibull proportional age reduction model and age replacement policy, we analyze economic life of cutting tool which allows re-grinding. Re-grinding task, usually for high-priced machining tools(e.g., broaching tool), is a kind of preventive maintenance activities to extend tool life at the completion of a lot production. The numerical results are also presented. Among the parameters of Weibull proportional age reduction model, the re-grinding effect parameter and Weibull shape parameter have a strong effect on economic tool life, and in the cost parameters, shortage cost is most sensitive. With further study on the parameter estimation of tool life process and cost function, this study can be expected to give more practical contribution to management of general machining tools.

IE interfaces, volume 19, issue 4, 2006, Pages 324~332
It is believed that each learner has a preferred method to acquire and manage knowledge according to her/his learning style which influences learning achievement directly. The purpose of this paper is to statistically analyze relationships among individual learning styles, tutoring functions, and learning achievement in an e-learning environment. 524 survey results from participants of enterprise e-learning classes are classified into total group and superior group. T-Test and ANOVA analyses are carried between learning style and learning achievement and between learning style and preferred tutoring functions. The analysis results show that individual learning styles do not contribute to learning achievement while they are strongly related to preferences for some of tutoring functions. These results can be used to identify limitation of current e-learning practice and design better e-learning systems, especially, supporting appropriate tutoring functions for different types of learners.

IE interfaces, volume 19, issue 4, 2006, Pages 333~341
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a technology that can input identification information to microchip and make goods, animals, persons recognized, chased, and managed using radio frequency, and is founded on the core technology of ubiquitous environment of the future. In this paper, we propose a RFID integrated system designed to manage the lifecycle of an individual product efficiently. The proposed system can enable traceability and visibility of items through their entire life by integrating distribution and banking information on the basis of EPCglobal Network. It may provide the infra of Digital Manufacturing and RTE (Real Time Enterprise) and effective information sharing structure with existing legacy system (ERP, CRM, SCM) by real time.
Cost Estimation for the Marine Engine's Factory using Association Rule
Oh, Kyung-Mo ; Park, Chang-Kwon ;
IE interfaces, volume 19, issue 4, 2006, Pages 342~354
The purpose of this thesis is to develop the schemes of supporting estimate for marine engines’ factories which are in a general make-to-order style. The marine engines’ factories currently use the method which depends on the past data and experiences handled by the responsible person, which causes inefficiency and inaccuracy in dealing with a huge amount of data. We apply association rule to solving the problems mentioned above. Critical data for analysis is filtered among materials that have been using actual records of performance so far. Secondly, relation with each part of marine engines through filtered data so that the company can estimate cost promptly and precisely if customers with similar components as requested. By proposed method of study estimate support efficient and supported exactly.
