Setup Planning for Computer Aided Fixture Planning System

This paper deals with the development of setup planning for Automated FIXture planning system(AFIX) which selects setups, setup sequence and operation sequence in each setup according to the machining mode. In AFIX, part type considered is prismatic workpiece that use the 3-2-1 locating system as the general structure of the fixture. The heuristic algorithms selecting setup and setup sequence are based on DDR(Degree of Dimensional Relationship), AMV(Admissible Misalignment Value) and machining sterategy and feature attributes. A case example is given to illustrate the performance fo AFIX.
Inter-Process Inspection System Suitable for Unattended Turning Cells

In a transfer line with mass production capability, calibration systems are included in the process as a separate dedicated station. However, this method is not appropriate in an unattended FMC with flexibility. As the FMC produces vesatile parts with small batch sizes, more flexible calibration systems are required. In this paper, a calibration/inspection system suitable for an unattended turning cell is introduced. The system has functions of dimensional calibration of parts by touch probes, tool wear compensation, and quality monitoring of parts. Furthermore, characteristics of errors in the system are identified and corresponding compensation methodology is suggested. An operation software is developed for efficient use of the system.
A Parameter Design Approach to Solve Some Inherent Problems of a Pilot Cola Machine

A study to analyze and solve inherent problems of a pilot cola machine has been presented in this paper. The product considered in this study involves at least 16 variables(factors) which simultaneously affect the product performance. For this multi-variate statistical problem, we first carefully examined their relationships and selected four variables considered as the most important. We have taken Taguchi's parameter design approach, specifically the
orthogonal array, and determined the optimal levels of the selected variables through the analysis of the experimental results. Finally, we conclude this study with providing general comments drawn from the analysis and verification experiments.
Material Handling System Improvement Analysis Applying Simulation Technique

This paper deals with analysis of material handling system efficiency of a heat-exchanger manufacturing line. This line is a typical flow shop type assembly line which consists of 10 steps of assembly stations. Each station have one or two workers who assemble and move components for the job, and no special transporters for component's movement. Therfore, all the workers are involoved in unnecessary moving activities which decrease overall production efficiencies of the line. To improve productivities, production outputs and worker's job performances for this assembly line, the several alternatives are considered such as installing new conveyor lines and automatic guided vehicle(AGV) system. Analyzing economic feasibilities and responses of the system alternatives, an experimental simulation model is built suing SIMAN Ver. 3. 5 simulation language with CINEMA package for animation of the process flow. Through this animation process a vivid picturial analysis could performed on the process flow.
Demand Forecast of Industrial Research and Development Manpower

Korean government plans to expand R & D expenditures to 39.8 billion dollars (5 percent of GNP) and to secure 150,000 R & D manpower (30 per 10,000 population) until 2001. This paper deals with industrial research and development manpower and is to forecast the demand of science and technology manpower to keep pace with the economic development goals which includes advancement of science and technology. This is composed of two parts. The first part is the review of the basic concepts of this research while the second one projects and overall future demand of science and technology manpower.
An Empirical Study on the Impact of the R&D Investment in Korean Firms

Recognizing the lack of empirical studies on the returns to R & D investment in Korean firms, this paper analyzes the relationships between R & D investment and corporate performances measured by sales growth rate, profit rate and PER. The data used here are from 167 firms in 8 different industries covering the period from 1985 to 1989. The results show that the profit rate is strongly correlated with R & D investment. But unlike the results of most studies previously done in the U.S., R & D investment only weakly and insignificantly correlated with sales growth and PER.
