A Rule-Based Expert System for NC Part Programming
Seo, Young-Gon ; Park, Yang-Byung ;
IE interfaces, volume 6, issue 2, 1993, Pages 3~17
Traditionally, programs for NC machine tools have been created using either a maunual method or a computer-assisted method. However, both methods are known to be complex, time-consuming and error-prone. This paper presents an intelligent system, called "INPPC" which is interfaced with a CAD system to generate APT NC part program automatically. The INPPC is developed by using VP-Expert rule-based expert system development tool, and obtains the information about the part shape by searching the CAD database, about the process by asking the related questions to the user, and about the machine tooling by searching the tool database. The INPPC is implemented on an IBM compatible PC/AT under MS-DOS, and its performance is demonstrated by consulting a simple example problem.

Cho, Kyu-Kab ; Ha, Jae-Woo ; Cha, Dong-Kyun ;
IE interfaces, volume 6, issue 2, 1993, Pages 19~35
This paper presents the development of a knowledge-based expert system to assist for designer in the process of designing products for easier assembly. The developed expert system for supporting assembly-oriented product design, which is named as DFA-MASTER, consists of two subsystems such as "Assembly Method Selection System" which provides feasible assembly methods to designer and "DFA-Analysis System" which provides guidelines to improve assemblability of products in the early stage of product design. The developed system is interfaced with AutoCAD system and can be run under PC environments. By using DFA-MASTER, designer can obtain feasible assembly methods which have high assemblability under the given asssembly conditions and also evaluate the assemblability of part feature or product structure.
A Study of Determination on Usage Life of Production Facilities for Economic LCC
Yoo, Il-Geon ; Park, Won-Jun ;
IE interfaces, volume 6, issue 2, 1993, Pages 37~51
This paper studies the economic replacement method for production facilities which requires huge investment but are necessary for higher productivity and competability of products. That is, the general models for the decision of economic life of properties which minimizes the total costs throughout the usage life(Life cycle costs) are generated. Main factors which make influences for the decision of econmic life can be divided by three. These are the change of salvage value, repair and maintenance costs, and availability of production facilities with the passage of usage time. In this paper, the real world data for these three factors are collected and analyzed for the extraction of representative standard forms with the passage of time. And general models for economic replacement methods and optimal usage terms are presented through tables with the combination of the standard forms of these three main factors.
Development of an Operation Software for the ASRI-FMS/CIM
Park, Chan-Kwon ; Park, Jin-Woo ; Kang, Suk-Ho ;
IE interfaces, volume 6, issue 2, 1993, Pages 53~65
This paper deals with the development of a software module for production planning and scheduling activities of an existing Flexible Machining and Assembly System (FMAS). The Production Planning Module uses the hierarchical and sequential scheme based on "divide and conquer" philosophy. In this module, routes are determined based on the production order, orders are screened, tools are allocated, and order adjustments are executed according to the allocated tools. The Scheduling Module allocates the resources, determines the task priority and the start and completion times of tasks. Re-scheduling can be done to handle unforeseen situations such as lumpy demands and machine breakdowns. Since all modules are integrated with a central database and they interface independently, it is easy to append new modules or update the existing modules. The result of this study is used for operating the real FMAS consisting of a machining cell with 2 domestic NC machines and a part feeding robot, an assembly cell with a conveyor and 3 robots, an inspection cell, an AGV, an AS/RS, and a central control computer.
Fuzzy Sets Application to System Reliability Analysis
Yun, Won-Young ; Heo, Gil-Hwan ;
IE interfaces, volume 6, issue 2, 1993, Pages 67~78
In this paper, we deal with the application of the fuzzy sets theory to evaluate and estimate the system reliability under the fault tree analysis. We formulate the uncertainty of component reliability to fuzzy sets, and propose a procedure for obtaining the system reliability in case the system structure is described by fault tree. An importance measure of each component is proposed. Computer program for fuzzy fault tree analysis(FFTA) is developed using C language to obtain the system reliability and the component‘s fuzzy importance.
Predicting Nuclear Power Plant Accidents in Korea
Yang, Hee-Joong ;
IE interfaces, volume 6, issue 2, 1993, Pages 79~89
We develop a statistical model to describe nuclear power plant accidents and predict time to next accident of various levels. We adopt Bayesian approach to obtain posterior and predictive distributions for the time to next accident. We also derive an approximation method to solve many dimensional numerical integration problems that we often encounter in a Bayesian approach. We introduce Influence Diagrams in modeling, and parameter updating, thereby the dependency or independency among model parameters are clearly shown. Also Separable Updating Theorem is utilized to easily obtain the posterior distributions.
Development of A Standard Time Data for Shirt Sewing Operations
Kim, Dong-Won ; Kang, Mi-Young ;
IE interfaces, volume 6, issue 2, 1993, Pages 91~101
Developed in this paper is a standard time data for shirt sewing operations in the apparel-making industry. Since this data is made of formula developed for each unit operation and includes the formula for the machine time calculation, users could use it for obtaining the normal or standard time without any special efforts. In addition, this data handles the variations due to the design changes of a shirt through the parameters in the formula. compared with the MTM-1. The standard time data developed is shown to be easier and faster in determining the standard time with acceptable accuracy.

Kim, Jong-Kyu ; Yong, Se-Jung ; Rim, Suk-Chul ;
IE interfaces, volume 6, issue 2, 1993, Pages 103~115
In dies manufacturing industry, quality, cost, and production leadtime are very important. In this study, we describe the current status and characteristics of dies industry in Korea. AS a case study, we introduce a CIM system implemented in a leading dies manufacturer and describe its components and functions. Subsequently, we analyze the effectiveness of the CIM system by using the real data between 1987 and 1992 from the company. It is indicated that the most significant impact of CIM is the reduced cost, followed by increased sales, reduced leadtime, and improved quality of dies. All these four variables show positive correlations with one another. However, the data indicate that the number of employees are not directly related with other variables : probably because additional personnel are required for operating new technology such as CAD/CAM and information network.

IE interfaces, volume 6, issue 2, 1993, Pages 117~131
A job sequencing model is developed and its computer system is tested for processing cold-rolled coils in Tandem Cold Mills(TCM) at the Pohang Iron and Steel Company. Given coils waiting to be processed, this system generates a sequence of jobs satisfying operational constraints for the TCM process. We formulate the problem as a constraint satisfaction problem and employ the backtracking technique combined with looking ahead features in order to generate a feasible solution within a reasonable time. Our system is implemented in C language on 80486-based IBM PC. Some tests based on the real data show that our system is adequate with respect to search time and that it consistantly generates a good feasible solution.

Jeon, Tae-Bo ; Kim, Young-Hui ; Ma, Sang-Hyeog ;
IE interfaces, volume 6, issue 2, 1993, Pages 133~150
Recent industrial efforts are directed toward the development of CIM(Computer integrated Manufacturing) system. It is often the case that the analysis of the system dynamic behaviour is overlooked, even if it is important for both the economic justification and system performance evaluation. The main purpose of this study is to present a n approach of system performance evaluation for PCB(Printed Circuit Board) manufacturing, especially the inner layer manufacturing processes, using simulation. The general overview of the PCB manufacturing environment has first been discussed. Then a computer simulation program which can consider the diverse dynamic environmental changes has been developed. Extensive system analyses have been performed based on the program developed and the three measures proposed. The results obtained in this study provide valuable guidelines for practical concerns and some recommendations for future extensions.
Stochastic Dominance and Distributional Inequality
Lee, Dae-Joo ;
IE interfaces, volume 6, issue 2, 1993, Pages 151~169
In this research, we proposed "coefficient of inequality" as a measure of distributional inequality for an alternative, which is defined as the area between the diagonal line from 0 to 1 and the Lorenz curve of the given alternative. Next, we showed theoretical relationship between stochastic dominance and the coefficient of inequality as a means to determine the preferred alternative when decision is made with incomplete information about decision maker's utility function. Then, two experiments were performed to test subject‘s attitude toward risk. The results of the experiments support the idea that when a decision maker is risk averse or risk prone, he/she can use the coefficient of inequality as a decision rule to choose the preferred alternative instead of using stochastic dominance. Thus, according to decision maker’s attitude toward risk, the decision rule proposed here can be used as a valuable aid in decision making under uncertainty with incomplete information.

IE interfaces, volume 6, issue 2, 1993, Pages 171~181
In this study, a process management system is designed that can automatically control the heat treating atmosphere, and a managment software is developed to monitor and control continously the heat treating process using a n interface device. Especially, a communication protocol is developed to control and monitor atmosphere condition, temperature, surrounding gas, and time. The developed interface device, called COMPORT SELECTOR is to send and receive information from PID controllers and PLC via RS-232C communication. This system will reduce manufacturing cost and cycle time, and improve the effectiveness of working process and quality.
