ISO 9000 Series Standards and Quality System Requirements

ISO 9000 is a series of several standards(ISO 8402, 9000, 9001, 9002, 9003, 9004,...). ISO 9000 is a standard explaining fundamental concepts, defining important terms, and providing guidance for selecting among the other standards. ISO 9001, the most comprehensive standard to ensure quality in design, development, production, installation, and servicing. ISO 9002 is used to assure conformance to specification, installation and servicing. ISO 9003 has the least requirement among three standards and applies to inspection and final testing. ISO 9004 is a standard developed for internal use only and not applicabe to contractual arrangements. In this paper, quality system requirements for ISO 9000 series are also specified.

With the increasing competitions and globalization of markets, quality has become rather crucial. Because of the significance of the quality, ISO 9000 quality standards has been used in Korea companies. It is difficult to understand ISO 9000 series since the expressions used in the series are not specific, but comprehensive. It is even more difficult to implement the quality system. This paper describes the problems found during the implementation and maintenance of the ISO 9000 standards in companies.
A Production Schedule for Load Leveling in a Block Assembly Shop

This paper presents a production scheduling model in a block assembly shop in shipbuilding industry. In a block assembly shop, the most important performance criterion is load leveling, which balances manpower and work area utilization through the planning horizon. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming(MINLP) problem of which objective function is to optimize load leveling. The developed MINLP problem can not be solvable due to computational complexity. The MINLP problem is decomposed into two stage mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problems to obtain a good solution, but the decomposed MILP problems are still computationally intractable because of combinatorial complexity. Therfore, a heuristic method using linear programming is proposed to solve two stage MILP problems sequentially. The proposed heuristic generates a good production schedule within a reasonable computation time, and it is easily applicable for establishing the production schedule in a block assembly shop in shipbuilding industry.
Design of the Simulation-Based Vehicle Distribution Planning System for Logistics

Many vehicle routing methods have been suggested, which minimize the routing distances of vehicles to reduce the total transportation cost. But the more considerations the method takes, the higher complexites are involved in a large number of practical situations. The purpose of this paper is to develop a vehicle distribution planning system using heuristic algorithms and simulation techniques for home electronics companies. The vehicle distribution planning system developed by this study involves such complicated and stochastic conditions as one depot, multiple nodes(demand points), multiple vehicle types, multiple order items, and other many restrictions for operating vehicles. The proposed system is compared with the nearest neighbor method of the current system in terms of total logistics cost and driving time. This heuristics algorithm and simulation based distribution planning system is efficient in computational complexity, and give improved solutions with respect to the cost as well as the time. This method constructs a route with a minimum number of vehicles for a given demand.

The Artificial Intelligence Lab of Industrial Engineering Department, Korea University is continuing to develop expert systems for quality control methods such as acceptance control, process control and reliability analysis. As a series of these efforts, The Artificial Intelligence Lab of Industrial Engineering Department, Korea University is continuing to develop expert systems for quality control methods such as acceptance control, process control and reliability analysis. As a series of these efforts, this paper concerns an expert system for design of experiment. The system includes factorial experiments, response surface methodology and Taguchi method. PROLOG is used as a language with dBASE III＋ for the data base management system and C for calculations and graphics. This system selecting the appropriate method and analyzing the data obtained can be implemented on an IBM PC 386 or a higher level machine.
Scheduling of Machining Shop Composed of Machining Center and Multiple Pallets

This study introduces a scheduling policy to achieve unmanned operations in machining shops representing the feature of both FMS and machining centers. The proposed policy considers the practical constraints in the machining shops such as lot sizes, multiple pallets, and jig/fixtures. In addition, rescheduling to cope with extraordinary events(eg., arrival of high-priority jobs and breakdown of machines) is included. Basically, the scheduling policy consists of four procedures; (1) selection of a job according to dispatching rule, (2) selection of a machine, (3) assignment of jobs to a multiple pallet for the unmanned operation during a certain shift, and (4) prevention of unexpected machine idle caused by constraints on jig/fixture.
The Effect of the Peculiarity of the Problem-solving Process on the Problem-solving Time

Despite extensive research on various factors affecting the effectiveness of decision support systems (DSS), considerable ambiguity still exists regarding the role and influence of the experience on the given task and the decision support system. Although researchers have advocated DSS effectiveness as a multi-dimensional construct, specific results regarding the effect of the familiarity in the task and the DSS on the problem-solving time is still lacking. The study reported here attempts to find the effect of the peculiarity of the problem-solving process on the problem-solving time. The results of the study highlight that the expertise in both the task and the DSS have made the shortage of the problem-solving time. However, more research about the generalized performance measure on the DSS is required.
An Analysis of Personal Computer Productivity Improvement through Factory Automation

The problem of productivity improvement is one of the most challenging problems facing the world economy. This paper studies an analysis of improving personal-computer(PC) company productivity through factory automation. It attempts to analyze value added productivity at the company level. The index measured will effectively help managers supervise their companys. This study justifies that the proposed approach will stimulate manager's profit-motivation by providing them with value-oriented management instead of quantity-oriented method.
Handling of Polyethylene Sheet Plate in Press Process

In this paper, we analyzed weak points of press process with the rolled thin flexible plate. The problems which are caused by the adhesion of blank on the surface of die and the separation of blank from scrap during its transportation after blanking were solved by the redesign of the structure of die and the development of special equipment for material handling. It is our purpose to make better the automation of blanking process and the safety for worker by the improvement of flexible material handling.
