CIM Implementation through JIT and MRP Integration

A CIM implementation case is introduced in this paper. It is accomplished through the integration of two fundamental approaches to production planning and control; JIT and MRP. The resultant system is a hybrid where some JIT methodologies prevail, but the benefits of the MRP are also required. A new BOM structure called 'Family-BOM' is designed for the load leveled production with small lot size and the synchronized production. The overall production planning concept is described with actual data.

In this paper, we develop a real-time manufacturing control and information management(POP) system that can support realization of CIM and information network of manufacturing system. The POP system systematically collect informal data that is originated from working area and make an offer collected information to planning side. Especially, this study designs a modular POP terminal that directly extract and process momentary information from field source and provide it to control system on real-time. In addition, we apply developed POP system with open architecture to flexibly and optimally operate the manufacturing system based on CIM.
Approaches to Concurrent Engineering and A Case Study

Recently, it has been widely conceived that Concurrent Enginering (CE) can provide a competitive edge for companies that have confronted with rapidly changing market requirements, such as shortening of product life-cycles, high quality and low cost products, diversity of customer demand, and so on. CE is generally recognized as a practice to bridge the gap between designing a product and other various life-cycle activities, such as manufacturing, assembly, testing, and maintenance, at an early stage of design. In this paper the concepts of CE is first overviewed, and many of its supporting tools are discussed. It is then proposed an architecture of a CE support system that can provide a unifying view of the tools. Finally, a case that has successfully implemented the concepts is presented.

This thesis reports the development of a Computer-Aided Process Planning system for rotational parts. The developed system ultimately generates process plans for rotational parts through a knowledge-base. The knowledge-base and decision-making algorithms are represented by Pascal computer programming language. We have developed a process planning system which adjusts the sequence of processes by itself to ensure the quality of the parts. This system generates more detailed job sequence and descriptions than other well-known process planning systems. We present realistic and efficient process plans through the integration of process planning and scheduling. This system optimizes flow time of parts by decreasing the number of machine set-ups.

Real-time Tool Condition Monitoring for Machining Operations

In computer integrated manufacturing environment, tool management plays an important role in controlling tool performance for machining operations. Knowledge of tool behavior during the cutting process and effective tool-behavior prediction contribute to controlling machine costs by avioding production delays and off-target parts due to tool failure. The purpose of this paper is to review and develop the tool condition monitoring scheme for drilling operation to assure a fast corrective response to minimize the damage if tool failures occur. If one desires to maximize system through-put and product quality as well as tooling resources, within an economic environment, real-time tool sensing system and information processing system can be coupled to provide the necessary information for the effective tool management. The example is demonstrated as to drilling operation when the aluminum composites are drilled with carbide-tipped HSS drill bits. The example above is limited to the situation that the tool failure mode of drill bits is wear.
A JIT Production Scheduling in Multi-Level Parallel Machine Flow Shops

Defined is a Multi-level Parallel Machine Flow-Shop (MPMFS) which reflects some real world manufacturing situations. Just-In-Time (JIT) philosophy is applied to the MPMFS scheduling in order to achieve lowering work-in-process inventory level as well as meeting due dates. A schedule generating simulator is developed. The latest start time of each operation is determined by a backward simulation followed by another forward simulation to analyze the schedule feasibility and actual inventory level. Reasonable schedules are available through adjusting some parameters for allowance factors such as set-up times of machines and other environmental changes. The SLAMSYSTEM under Window is employed for this processing with some input/output data handling processes devised under DOS.
Automatic Conversion of Machining Data by the Feature Recognition of Press Mold

This paper presents an automatic conversion of machining data from the orthographic views of press mold by feature recognition rule. The system includes following 6 modules : separation of views, function support, dimension text check and feature processing modules. The characteristic of this system is that with minimum user intervention, it recognizes basic features such as holes, slots, pockets and clamping parts and thus automatically converts CAD drawing details of press mold into machining data using 2D CAD system instead of using an expensive 3D Modeler. The system is developed by using IBM-PC in the environment of AutoCAD R12, AutoLISP and MetaWare High C. Performance of the system is verified as a good interfacing of CAD and CAM when applied to a lot of sample drawing.
Sensitivity Analysis on the Degenerate Tree Solution of the Minimum Cost Flow Problem

The purpose of this paper is to develop a method of the sensitivity analysis that can be applicable to a degenerate tree solution of the minimum cost flow problem. First, we introduce two types of sensitivity analysis. A sensitivity analysis of Type 1 is the well known method applicable to a spanning tree solution. However, this method have some difficulties in case of being applied to a degenerate tree solution. So we propose a sensitivity analysis of Type 2 that keeps solutions of upper bounds remaining at upper bounds, those of lower bounds at lower bounds, and those of intermediate values at intermediate values. For the cost coefficient, we present a method that the sensitivity analysis of Type 2 is solved by using the method of a sensitivity analysis of Type 1. Besides we also show that the results of sensitivity analysis of Type 2 are union set of those of Type 1 sensitivity analysis. For the right-hand side constant or the capacity, we present a simple method for the sensitivity analysis of Type 2 which uses arcs with intermediate values.
A Study on the Application of S-curve for Basic Plan in a Shipbuilding Yard

In this paper, we develop computerized procedures of the S-Curve, the cumulative progress rates of load input, applied to shipbuilding basic plan. For a real world ship yard, we study the application related problems and develop more efficient procedures of applying the curves in terms of usability and computerization. The yard currently do not have any mathematical expression for the S-Curve. They express the curves using data tables which represents data points of the manually drafted S-Curve graphs, which causes the difficulties in efficient computerization. Another problem the yard has is the lack of the feedback procedure of the actual load different from the initial plan. Due to those problems, the application procedures of the S-Curve require much time and endeavor amounting two full time employees. To resolve the problems, we develop the mathematical expression of the S-Curve using beta distribution function and the feedback procedure regenerating the planned load reflecting the difference between the initial plan and its realization. To build user friendly program, the graphic user interface is also developed using OSF/MOTIF toolkits. Through the development, we reduce the burden required in applying the curves to a part-time job of one employee.
The Development of the Drawing Information Management Module for the Technical Document Management System

For the implementation of CE(Concurrent Engineering), the TDMS(Technical Document Management System) which integrates design and manufacuring information, is required. In this paper a drawing information management system, one of the essential modules for the TDMS has been developed. The system is operated in SUN SPARC II workstations. A CAD software called CIMCAD-2D is used for the storage and management of drawings. Relational DBMS ORACLE is used for the development of information data bases concerned with drawings. As an integration tool, the multi-media software called LINKAGE is used. Various functions for drawings and concerned information have been developed with the internal language CIMSHELL and SQL
Graphic Environment & Database for Utility Management in CIM

In this study, graphic environment for system monitoring is designed that can efficiently manage monitoring data. And also system informations are inplemented to database for reliability and a utility management software is developed to monitor systems on graphic environment and RDBMS (Relational DataBase Management System). Specially, system status informations are presented in the forms of animation, graph, value, icon, and voice message. Status data and general basic informations of system can be all the times updated and indexly reported on database.
A Study on Analysis of the Main Factors Influencing Researchitivity in Principal Korean Manufacturing Industries

The main objective of this study is to develop a model which describe and explain R&D productivity (Researchitivity measured by patents) in Korea four manufacturing industries-electric & electronic, machine, textile, industrial chemicals-during the last ten years. The model largely focuses on the variables related to R&D investment in order to investigate the efficiency of R&D. The results suggest that there is associated with a significant positive correlation between Researchitivity and industrial size. There are interaction effects between the Researchitivity and the sales volume. Researchitivity is positively correlated with the average wage of R&D employees. It also founded that Researchitivity is more closely associated with investment size than industrial nature.
