Reflective action research on setting up and implementing mathematics tasks demanded students' high-level cognition
Park, Young-Eun ; Kim, Nam-Gyun ;
Education of Primary School Mathematics, volume 10, issue 2, 2007, Pages 77~110
This study attempted to investigate how to students show high-level mathematical thinking in math classes. This paper describes how to setup the task for lead to a high - level of thinking out students and what efforts are required while a teacher tried to maintaining students's high-level cognition during the tasks implemented. The researcher as teacher analyzed the tasks of length measurement unit in 2-Ga elementary math textbooks, modified and created math tasks demanded students' high-level cognition, made instruction plans, and implemented those tasks maintaining the levels of cognitive demand of tasks. After that, the researcher reflected and analyzed the levels of cognitive demand of tasks of instruction and factors that cause to change intended high-level cognitive demand. After reflection, second roof of action research was conducted to 2-Na length measurement unit. This paper includes those results and reflections of practitioner.
An Investigation of Patterns and Functions in Elementary School Mathematics Textbooks
Kwon, Sung-Yong ;
Education of Primary School Mathematics, volume 10, issue 2, 2007, Pages 111~123
The purpose of this study was to examine contents and activities of patterns and functions in the 7th national curriculum for elementary school mathematics and textbooks developed based on it. Through examination, several conclusions were drawn as follow. First, pattern need to be introduced as a way of doing mathematics not as a subject of mathematics. Finding patterns is one of the most important mean to do mathematics. Second, activities for patterns and functions must be organized coherently. Coherent means that mathematical ideas are linked to and build on one another so that students' understanding and knowledge deepens and their ability to apply mathematics expands. Third, independent lessons for patterns and functions are needed. In these lessons, various activities need finding patterns can be introduced to help students understand mathematics. Fourth, the linkage between patterns and functions should be strengthened.
A Study on the Method of Using Educational Aids for Improving Mathematical Understanding
Nam, Seung-In ; Kwon, Min-Sung ;
Education of Primary School Mathematics, volume 10, issue 2, 2007, Pages 125~139
The purpose of this study seeks entry into a method to make the use of educational aids popular. To achieve it, it is observed that instructions applying worksheets to make an activation of use of educational aids have influences on mathematical achievement and mathematical disposition and attitude. All variables exception with the frequence of use of educational aids are controlled in both experimental group and comparative group. According to the result, there is no significant difference of mathematical achievement in pre t-test between two groups, while experimental group get 10 points higher than comparative group in average (t=0.519, p<0.01). On the other hand, within intra-experimental group the influences of use of educational aids on mathematical achievement is positive without the achievement levels of students. The difference dependent on the levels of student is sought by ANCOVA using prescores as a covariance, and it appears in the significance level of 5%(F=4.885, p<0.05), and the effect is more in the lower level of students than in the middle and high level.
Survey for the Remedial Instruction on Arithmetic Word Problems Solving of Elementary School Students
Lee, Bong-Ju ; Moon, Seung-Ho ;
Education of Primary School Mathematics, volume 10, issue 2, 2007, Pages 141~149
It is undeniably important to bring up a solution capability of arithmetic word problems in the elementary mathematical education. The goal of this study is to acquire the implication for remedial instruction on arithmetic word problems solving through surveying elementary school students' difficulties in the solving of arithmetic word problems. In order to do it, this study was intended to analyze the following two aspects. First, it was analyzed that they generally felt more difficulties in which field among addition, subtraction, multiplication and division word problems. Second, with the result of the first analysis, it was examined that they solved it by imagining as which sphere of the other word problems. Also, the cause of their error on the word problem solving was analyzed by the interview. From the foregoing analyses, the following implications for remedial instruction on arithmetic word problems solving are acquired. First, the accumulation of learning deficiency must be diminished through the remedial instruction. Second, it must help students to understand the given problem and to make of what the goal of problem is. Third, it must help students to form a good habit for reading the problem and to understand the context of problem. forth, the teacher must help students to review and reflect their problem-solving processes.
The Role of Teachers in Reform the Culture of Mathematics Classroom
Park, Sung-Sun ;
Education of Primary School Mathematics, volume 10, issue 2, 2007, Pages 151~161
There were a lot of attempt to reform mathematics education. These may include reforms of teaching and learning methods, development of mathematics curriculum and textbooks, materials and resources for teaching. But the most important thing is reform of teaching and learning method. The teaching and learning in mathematics is related with culture of mathematics classroom. Thus the culture of mathematics classroom plays a critical role in the learning of mathematics. Although there is consensus what desirable culture of mathematics classroom is, the role of teachers is important to make desirable culture of mathematics classroom. So, this paper suggested the role of teachers in reforming the culture of mathematics classroom. Avoiding from routine and technical teaching, the teachers should play active role in constructing mathematical understanding of students.
