A Study on the Application of Situated Cognition Theory in the Mathematics Education
Kim, Sang-Lyong ;
Education of Primary School Mathematics, volume 15, issue 1, 2012, Pages 1~11
Unlike traditional cognitive theory, situated cognition theory has been understood as a pedagogical theory that highly reflects the constructivist nature of learning. In order to practice situated learning in school, situations in the classroom are very important in which real teaching and learning occurs. Due to the fact that learning is the process of mental activities which is considerably dependent on conditions and context, it focuses more on the learning process and real-situation experiences rather than the result itself. In mathematics education, teaching students the ability to solve given problems in a conventional way is not enough anymore. The purpose of this research is to suggest the direction of mathematical education in the classroom by analyzing the implications of situated cognition theory and situated learning for 'doing mathematics' in classroom teaching. In this research, we introduce briefly about situated cognition theory and situated learning, compare the phenomenon of mathematics in the classroom to that in the mathematician's mind, and finally propose the applications of situated cognition theory in the mathematics education based on three perspectives of situated cognition theory the embodiment thesis, the embedding thesis, and the extension thesis.
The Analysis of Cause of Gender Gap in Items of 6th Grade National Assessment of Educational Achievement
Suh, Bo-Euk ; Lee, Kwang-Sang ;
Education of Primary School Mathematics, volume 15, issue 1, 2012, Pages 13~29
This study is the analytic research of items having gender gap in 6th grade students in 'National Assessment of Educational Achievement(NAEA)'. For this problem solving, the following was investigated. First, items having gender gap were selected in NAEA for the past eight years. Then, the mathematical factors that cause gender gap were analyzed. Second, to do this the field test was developed using item concept map. Finally, after the analysis of field test result the reason of gender gap was deduced. Through this study the improvement of mathematics teaching and learning method in elementary school is expected.
A study on the Circular art using a numeral operation for the mathematical gifted - Focused on the design of a circle using GSP -

Education of Primary School Mathematics, volume 15, issue 1, 2012, Pages 31~40
In this paper, we developed teaching learning models using a numeral operation for the mathematical gifted focused on the design of a circle using GSP and investigated effects of this models. This model gave gifted-students to be able to produce creative outputs with mathematical principles and practicality and beauty of mathematics. We found following facts. Firstly, a developed teaching-learning model improves a mathematical gifted student's mathematical creativity as analytic thinking and deductive inference. Secondly, a circular design using GSP helps gifted students to understand the abstract rules because mathematical patterns was represented visually by a circular design. Lastly, a circular design using a numeral operation is helpful to gifted students revealing to creativity and beauty of mathematics.
A comparison analysis of the Statistical sections between in the Korean Elementary Mathematics textbooks and the MiC textbooks
Choi, Seon-Hee ; Lee, Dae-Hyun ;
Education of Primary School Mathematics, volume 15, issue 1, 2012, Pages 41~52
The korean mathematics textbooks according to the 2007 revised mathematics curriculum and the MiC textbooks are similar in that they introduce mathematical materials in real life situations and are composed in such a way that require students to form their own mathematical concepts. However the MiC textbooks are focus more on situation-centered problems and context-centered problems where a set of procedures need to be followed in order to arrive at an answer. So, this paper is aim at comparing the units of statistics in the korean mathematics textbooks and the MiC textbooks in order to find the implications for writing textbook. By comparing the specific content and the used methods, I found Korean textbooks focused on understanding concepts and spending less time surveying and collecting data. On the other hand, MiC textbooks used activities that real mathematicians would be involved with, such as surveying and analyzing data to compose mathematical concepts.
