The Effects of 4D-Frame Teaching upon Mathematically Gifted Elementary Students` Mathematical Creativity and Spatial Sense

The aim of this study was to develop a gifted educational program in math-gifted class in elementary school using recently developed 4D-frame. This study identified how this program impacted on spatial sense and mathematical creativity for mathematically gifted students. The investigation attempted to contribute to the developments for the gifted educational program. To achieve the aim, the study analysed the 5 and 6th graders` figure learning contents from a revised version of the 2007 national curriculum. According to this analysis, twelve learning sections were developed on the basis of 4D-frame in the math-gifted educational program. The results of the study is as follows. First, a learning program using 4D-frame for spatial sense from mathematically gifted elementary school students was statistically significant. A sub-factor of spatial visualization called mental rotation and sub-factors of spatial orientations such as sense of distance and sense of spatial perception were statistically significant. Second, the learning program that uses 4D-frame for mathematical creativity was statistically significant. The sub-factors of mathematical creativity such as fluency, flexibility and originality were all statistically significant. Third, the manipulation properties of 4D-frame helped to understand the characteristics of various solid figures. Through the math discussions in the class, participants` error correction was promoted. The advantage of 4D-frame including easier manipulation helped participants` originality for their own sculpture. In summary, this found that the learning program using 4D-frame attributed to improve the spatial sense and mathematical creativity for mathematically gifted students in elementary school. These results indicated that the writers` learning program will help to develop the programs for the gifted education program in the future.
The Analysis of the 6th Grade Students` Mathematical Thinking on the Application of Lakatos` Methodology

In this study, We analyzed the mathematical thinking of sixth grade students showed mathematics lessons through the application of Lakatos` methodology and search for the role of their teachers in this lessons. We supposed to find the solution to the way of teaching-learning regarding the Lakatos` methodology for the elementary school level. According to the stages of presenting a problem situation, suggesting an initial conjecture, examining the conjecture, and improving the conjecture, we had lessons 8 times that are applied to Lakato`s methodology. We gathered and analyzed data from lessons and interviews recording videotapes, documents for this study. The participants showed a lot of mathematical thinking. They understood the problem situation with the skill of fundamental thinking and suggested the initial conjecture by the skill of developmental thinking and they found a counter-example to be able to rebut the initial conjecture by critical thinking. Correcting the conjecture not to have counter-example, they drew developmental thinking and made their thinking generalize.
The Development and the Effects of Educational Program applied on STEAM for the Mathematical Prodigy

The purposes of this study were to development and verify the effect of educational program apply on STEAM for the mathematical prodigy. To accomplish these purposes literature review on development of the program and qualitative study were conducted. The mixed-model design was applied for this qualitative experimental study. The conclusions of this study were as follows. First, the program for mathematical prodigy education applied on the conceptual model of STEAM integration approach was developed. Second, a learning satisfaction about constitution of the workbook was lowly. Third, principal of STEAM was the best interest and difficult of the program applied on STEAM. Fourth, the creativity and problem solving ability was founded about angle and velocity of mathematical domain and making the Angrybirds Game on GeoGebra environment. In spite of difficulty about principal of the Angrybirds Game, confidence and satisfaction were founded about a result product.
Comparative Analysis of Elementary Mathematics Textbooks in Korea and China: Focused on the area of Geometry

This study is aimed to compare the area of geometry of elementary mathematics textbooks in korea and china. Through this study, we would like to suggest some guidelines in order to develop geometric curriculum and textbooks in korea and to search for more efficient methods of learning mathematics. For this, we have looked through the general characteristics of geometry domain in mathematics curriculums and the textbooks in korea and china. Furthermore, we have found the similarities and differences while comparing specific contents in the two countries. The followings are the conclusions of this study. First, The mathematics curriculum in korea is divided into `figure` domain, but the one in china is divided into `space and figure` domain, which deals with figure and measurement. And china constructs the contents of the basic figure as a whole unit. Second, korea gives clear learning aims about contents whereas china gives learning activities. Lastly, when starting teaching a plain figure, korea focuses on checking and finding definitions and characters through fundamental figures. However, china focuses on figuring out components and the relations among them throughout various plain figure activities.
Korean Elementary Teachers` Perceptions and Use of Manipulative Materials in Mathematics Textbooks

The use of manipulative materials is one of the most important teaching-learning methods at primary level, and is recommended across all grade levels and for all areas of mathematics. This study looked into specific manipulative materials suggested in Korean elementary mathematics textbooks and analysed perceptions and actual use of the manipulative materials according to the teachers. As a result, although most teachers were fully familiar with mathematical topics for which manipulative materials can be used and actually used those materials in lessons, but their knowledge on the efficiency of manipulatives and the way to use them efficiently was found somewhat insufficient. This suggests that teachers` knowledge on manipulative materials must be enhanced and there should be active measures taken to support the use of it.
