A comparative study on the area of polygon in mathematics textbooks of Korea and Russia
Han, In-Ki ;
Education of Primary School Mathematics, volume 9, issue 1, 2005, Pages 1~9
This study is to compare contents of mathematics textbooks of Korea and Russia laying stress on the area of polygon. We analyzed and compared descriptions of the concept 'area of polygon' and varification on formula of area of polygon in Korean and Russian mathematics textbooks.
An Analytic Study on the Elementary School Mathematics Textbooks via Discrete Mathematics
Choi Keunbae ; Kang Mun-Bo ;
Education of Primary School Mathematics, volume 9, issue 1, 2005, Pages 11~29
Discrete mathematics is as important as it was reformed as an optional subject in the middle school and high school in the 7th national curriculum. There are a lot of studies about discrete mathematics in the middle course but studies about it in elementary course has little performed. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the concept of discrete mathematics, which is hidden in the mathematics textbook of elementary school and to develop the learning materials of discrete mathematics. Through this, it would make the students to have the sharp insight in their daily lift and mathematical experience by learning: the mathematical inquiry and adaptation.
The reinvention method for the gifted students in mathematics education according to Freudenthal's theory
Kang, Heung-Kyu ;
Education of Primary School Mathematics, volume 9, issue 1, 2005, Pages 31~41
In modern theory, creativity is an aim of mathematics education not only for the gifted but also fur the general students. The assertion that we must cultivate the creativity for the gifted students and drill the mechanical activity for the general students are unreasonable. Freudenthal has advocated the reinvention method, a pedagogical principle in mathematics education, which would promote the creativity. In this method, the pupils start with a meaningful context, not ready-made concepts, and invent informative method through which he could arrive at the formative concepts progressively. In many face the reinvention method is contrary to the traditional method. In traditional method, which was named as 'concretization method' by Freudenthal, the pupils start with ready-made concepts, and applicate this concepts to various instances through which he could arrive at the understanding progressively. Freudenthal believed that the mathematical creativity could not be cultivated through the concretization method in which the teacher transmit a ready-made concept to the pupils. In the article, we close examined the reinvention method, and presented a context of delivery route which is a illustration of reinvention method. Through that context, the principle of pascal's triangle is reinvented progressively.
Effects of metacognitive instructions on mathematical reasoning ability in the elementary school students
Bae Hye-Jung ; Nam Seung In ;
Education of Primary School Mathematics, volume 9, issue 1, 2005, Pages 43~58
The objective of the present study was designed to examine that metacognition education had any promoting effects on the development of students' reasoning ability. Two classes in the 5th grade were asked to participated for the present study. Prior to the metacognition teaching, both the experimental and control group classes were given to the preliminary test in which students' basic ability for mathematical reasoning was graded. Then, the students in the experimental group were given 8hour teaching for the topics on the symmetric properties of geometric figures. The present findings indicate that educational application which motivates metacognition can improve mathematical reasoning ability in elementary students. It is widely accepted that metacognition is an active and conscious mental activity, helps the students perceive voluntarily the study items, and further plays an important role in constructing independent and active thinking processes. Accordingly, the present results implicate that the practical performance of metacognition education into the class indeed contributes to build up or strengthen students' voluntary ways of reasoning.
A Study on Using Dynamic Geometry Software in Elementary Math Classroom
Baek, Sun-Su ;
Education of Primary School Mathematics, volume 9, issue 1, 2005, Pages 59~64
The purpose of this study is to find out how to use dynamic geometry software such as the Geometer's Sketchpad in elementary math classroom. Fist of all, I reviewed dynamic geometry software's property. Then I considered methods to improve geometry education using this software. Some researchers proposed three types of using the software. But I think using the software and developing instructional materials is different. So, I proposed two types of developing instructional materials using the software and two representative examples.
