Exploring Preservice Teachers' Computational and Representational Knowledge of Content and Teaching Fractions

The data for the present paper was a part of a large research project conducted to assess preservice teachers' knowledge related to fractions and place value at a southwestern public university in 2007. The study utilized convenience sampling, consisting of 150 elementary preservice teachers who were enrolled in a mathematics methods course before their student teaching. The results demonstrated preservice teachers' knowledge of teaching comparison, addition, subtraction, and multiplication of fractions was insufficient even though these should be basic knowledge. Teacher preparation programs should emphasize profound knowledge for teaching fractions using representations.
Designing an Assessment to Measure Students' Inferential Reasoning in Statistics: The First Study, Development of a Test Blueprint

Accompanied with ongoing calls for reform in statistics curriculum, mathematics and statistics teachers purposefully have been reconsidering the curriculum and the content taught in statistics classes. Changes made are centered around statistical inference since teachers recognize that students struggle with understanding the ideas and concepts used in statistical reasoning. Despite the efforts to change the curriculum, studies are sparse on the topic of characterizing student learning and understanding of statistical inference. Moreover, there are no tools to evaluate students' statistical reasoning in a coherent way. In response to the need for a research instrument, in a series of research study, the researcher developed a reliable and valid measure to assess students' inferential reasoning in statistics (IRS). This paper describes processes of test blueprint development that has been conducted from review of the literature and expert reviews.
The Investigation Research of Mathematics Classroom Questioning in Junior High School

Through quantitative analysis of two math classroom videos, combined with the relationship between types of teachers' questioning and students' answering, it is concluded the following problems are in the mathematics classroom teaching: (1) The time of teachers' questioning is longer, the number is too much, with managerial questions and prompting questions is given priority to; (2) Teachers' questioning time is longer than students' answering time, comprehensive answer is more, creative answer is little; (3) In the classroom questioning, students' participation is low; and (4) There is a significant correlation between types of teachers' questioning and length of waiting time after questions. In response to these phenomena, we propose strategies as follows: pursuit of timeliness of classroom questioning, reducing inefficient questions, to increase efficient questions, adopting different waiting strategies for different questioning types, to mobilize students' thinking activities, and improving students' participation etc.
From Visualization to Computer Animation Approaches in Mathematics Learning: the Legacy throughout History of Human Endeavours for Better Understanding

Presently, there has been growing interests in using mathematics' history in teaching mathematics [Katz, V. & Tzanakis, C. (Eds.) (2011). Recent Developments on Introducing a Historical Dimension in Mathematics Education. Washington, DC: Mathematical Association of America]. Thus, this article introduces some work of scholars from ancient East Indian culture like Bhaskara (AD 1114-1185) and Arabic culture such as Ibn Qurrah (AD 9th c) that are related to Pythagoras Theorem. In addition, some Babylonian creative works related to Pythagorean triples found in a tablet known as 'Plimpton 322', and an application of the Pythagorean Theorem found in another tablet named 'Yale Tablet' are presented. Applications of computer animation of dissection Motion Operations concept in 2D and 3D using dynamic software like Geometer's-Sketchpad and Cabri-II-and-3D. Nowadays, creative minds are attracted by the recent stampede in the advances of technological applications in visual literacy; consequently, innovative environments that would help young students, gifted or not, acquiring meaningful conceptual understanding would immerge.
Piaget's Theory in the Development of Creative Thinking

Piaget's revolutionary study on the cognitive development of children has focused on the development of logic. Logical operations and a variety of classifications based on the set of accepted rules involve convergent thinking. Children and adults have logical and creative thinking which deal with a reality of thinking. This study aims to examine a cognitive structure of students, which is closely related to the Piaget's cognitive development theories of students when creative thinking. Students were given an open mathematical problem and were expected to be able to take advantage of sensitivity, fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration which can be seen as clearly of their structure cognitive.
