A Study on the relation between Mathematical Scholastic Ability and Scholastic Aptitude Test

Currently science and technology are changing so fast and college mathematics becomes more and more important. But the downturn of freshmen's scholastic performance has been intensified and this phenomenon leads to serious problems in managing college curriculums. During the recent years at a middle level engineering college, many freshmen had a lot of difficulties in their mathematics courses. In consequence, many of them had hard time to survive at their major curriculums. In this point of view, we analyse the situation of mathematical scholastic ability among engineering majored freshmen through the research on the actual state of mathematical background, mathematical scholastic ability test, college mathematics scores, and scholastic aptitude test scores. We study the relation between the mathematics score of scholastic aptitude test for the college entrance and mathematical scholastic ability of freshmen of a middle level engineering college. From this study we conclude that the essential reasons for the above situations are the curriculum of middle school mathematics and the system of scholastic aptitude test and the entrance examination of university. In order for improving mathematical accomplishment. we give suggestions such as a learning ability improvement program in mathematics.
A study on An abridged version of the Joseon Mathematics (Su-Hak-Jeol-Yo), a mathematics book written by Jong-Hwa AN

In 2007, a Taiwanese mathematics historian Wann-Sheng HORNG made a visit to Kyujanggak(the royal library of Joseon Dynasty) in Seoul, Korea. During this visit, he found the Korean math book An abridged version of the Joseon Mathematics (<數學節要>, Su-Hak-Jeol-Yo), which was written by Jong-Hwa AN(9 Nov 1860 - 24 Nov 1924) in 1882. Then he mentioned the possible importance of AN's book in his article in the Journal Kyujanggak(vol. 32, June 2008). Jong-Hwa AN is a Korean scholar, activist of patriotism and enlightenment in the latter era of Joseon Dynasty. He passed the last examination of Joseon Dynasty to become a high government officer in 1894. The father of the modern mathematics education in Korea, Sang-Seol LEE(1870-1917) also passed the same examination with him. It is interesting that government high officer AN and LEE both wrote mathematics books in 19th century. In this talk, we now analyze this mathematics book of Joseon written in 1882.
A Study on the Curriculum Development of Statistics for University-level Program

The objective of this study is to develop university-level program(UP) 'Statistics Curriculum'. The UP program is a Korean curriculum sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Technology, which offers standardized courses to high school students that are generally recognized to be equivalent to undergraduate courses in college. In this paper we analyze that various programs are being conducted currently in Korea and overseas related with University-level Program in mathematics. And we describe course of the study, mathematical objectives of developed statistics curriculum on the study.
Centroid teaching-learning suggestion for mathematics curriculum according to 2009 Revised National Curriculum

Mathematics curriculum according to 2009 Revised National Curriculum suggests that school mathematics must cultivate interest and curiosity about mathematics in addition to creative thinking ability of students, and ability and attitude of observing and analyzing many things happening around. Centroid of a triangle in 2007 Revised National Curriculum is defined as 'an intersection point of three median lines of a triangle' and it has been instructed focusing on proof study that uses characteristic of parallel lines and similarity of a triangle. This could not teach by focusing on the centroid itself and there is a problem of planting a miss concept to students. And therefore this writing suggests centroid must be taught according to its essence that centroid is 'a dot that forms equilibrium', and a justification method about this could be different.
An Analysis on the Pedagogical Content Knowledge of Natural number Concepts for Korean Elementary School Teachers

The purpose of this research is to analyze the pedagogical content knowledge on the natural number concepts of Korean Elementary School Teachers. Shulman(1986b) had developed a tool in order to understand teachers' knowledge, as he defined three types of knowledge in teaching ; Subject Matter Knowledge, Curricular Knowledge, and Pedagogical Content Knowledge. Pang(2002) defined two types of elements including in the ways of teaching ; individual element, and sociocultural element. Two research questions are addressed; (1) What is the pedagogical content knowledge of Natural number Concepts for Korean Elementary School Teachers? ; (2) What factors are included in the pedagogical content knowledge of Natural number Concepts for Korean Elementary School Teachers? Findings reveal that (1) the Korean Elementary School Teachers had three types of the pedagogical content knowledge on the natural number concepts; (2) Teacher Factors were more included than Social-Cultural Factors in the pedagogical content knowledge on the natural number concepts of the Korean Elementary School Teachers. Further suggestions were made for future researches to include (1) a comparative study on teachers between ordinary teachers and those who majored mathematics education in the graduate school. (2) an analysis on the classroom activities about the natural number concepts.
