Sapphire Enhancement with BeO Powder Source

in order to quantify the BeO diffusion enhancement for corundum gem stones. We investigated the heat treated samples with visual evaluation, color coordination analysis, and surface roughness measurement. We confirmed that
ions did not lead to orange color but to dark gray. The lightness in CIE Lab index decreased while surface roughness increased rapidly as BeO contents increased. We propose that BeO yellow color enhancement may be feasible only for
rich blue sapphires and sub-5% BeO content be appropriate to shorten post re- cutting process.
A Study on Characterization of Modified Surface Manufactured by PTA Spray

Plasma Transferred Arc Spray process was used to make modified surface for wear and corrosion resistant by using Co system powder type alloy. The modified surface was produced by changing only spray current and other process variables were constant. The current range was from 80 amp to 140 amp as inclosing 20 amp. It was appeared that the geometrical shape, microstructures and microhardness of the modified surface were affected by the different cooling rate of base metal. The modified surface that produced by 120 amp current exhibited the fine microstructure and the highest microhardness number impling good surface characteristics. It was also found that the spray current affected the width but not the height of the bead as increasing current.
A study on the Preparation Methods of the Immobilized Encapsulation PVA-media for Wastewater Treatment

Immobilization technique by PVA encapsulation is an effective alternative for wastewater treatment. However little information is available about the effect of PVA characteristics on physical properties as an encapsulation media. This study aims at investigating the effect of the preparation methods of PVA and filler addition to media on the solubility of PVA. The solubility decreased as the freezing temperature decreased and the vacuum-drying was applied. Addition of the PAC (Powered Activated Carbon) and organoclay decreased the solubility of the PVA gels. Organoclay was more effective for lowering the solubility about 25% than the PAC. Nitrification with the PVA-coating media was less sufficient than with the polyurethane media due to the mass transfer restriction for oxygen and nutrients.
A Feasibility Study on the Application of Self-Shielded Flux Cored Arc Welding Process for the On-Site Steel Bridge Box Fabrication

A feasibility study on the application of self?shielded flux cored arc welding to the on-site SM520 steel bridge box fabrication for express trains and high way construction instead of gas-shield flux cored arc welding was conducted in terms of weld soundness, mechanical properties, toughness and microstructures. All welded specimens made with the self?shielded FCAW process were tested by magnetic particle and ultrasonic techniques and they were found to be sound. All multipass weld specimens made with both self-shielded and gas-shielded FCAW processes showed yield and tensile strengths of
, respectively. The impact values of Charpy V-Notch weld specimens also met with the required value of 40J at
. The hardness values of the top area of weldments were higher than those of the bottom area because of higher residual stresses in the near surface. It was found that welding characteristics of SM520 steel by the on-site welding conditions with self-shielded FCAW showed almost equivalent to those by gas-shielded FCAW in terms of sound welds, mechanical properties and microstructure.
The design and Manufacture of Laser Induced Fluorescence Spectroscope Using the High Resolution Charge Coupled Device

It is very important to use the charge coupled devices (CCDs) in spectrometry because we can study the molecular energy level, molecular structure, absorption or emission, intermolecular reaction, weakly bound molecular energy, photochemistry, fluorescence and photodynamic therapy (PDT). CCD is very essential to study the molecular structure and medical engineering combining laser spectroscopy in the modem physicsal and chemistry. Therefore, this study has designed and manufactured the electromagnetic spectrometry with CCD and then analyzed the printed electronic circuit. In the yesterday, CCD was thought to be used in only broadcasting system. But nowadays, it is used by industrial demand in observations, instrumentations and robotics as the industry develop.
Development of mass spectrometric analysis of
(I) chain Collagen

Collagen is the important structural proteins in mammals with various peptide composition and cross-linkings. The direct analysis of collagen protein was not suitable because of its structural complexity and diversity. In this study, we suggest the simple way of collagen analysis by introducing matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) to identify the collagen and its trypsin-digested fragments, and by subsequent time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry(Q-TOF MS/MS) to analyze the amino acid sequences of identified fragments. Using the collagen samples extracted from the tail of mouse, 10 separated bands were found in SDS-PAGE, and the masses of most bands could be more finely determined by MALDI-TOF MS. When each 10 separated proteins was tryptic digested and introduced to MALDI-TOF, the Gly1056-Arg1073 fragment from
-chain was identified in four bands, and the Gly1056-Arg1073 fragment from
-chain was identified in five bands, both in type I collagen. Although few fragments were found because of the cross-linkings left in digested collagen sample, it could be determined that the type I collagen existed at least in 7 separated bands. When the amino acid sequences of two identified fragments were analyzed by Q-TOF MS/MS, both sequences were identical with those determined by MALDI-TOF MS. It suggested that the two peaks in MALDI-TOF MS caused by the fragments identified in this work could be used as the fingerprint to simply identify type I collagen in protein samples.
Preparation and Dissolution Properties of the Trace Elements doped

At the previous papers, we showed that
glasses had a solubility in air so that they could be used for glass fertilizer. In this work, we fabricated the Eco-glass fertilizer containing trace elements of B, Mg, Zn, Fe, Cu, Co, Mo, the needed micronutrients for plants to grow, by a melt-quenching process. The dissolution properties in these glasses were investigated with a pH meter and an ICP analyzer. The trace elements doped glasses showed similar behavior in dissolutions and stability properties with the mother glass without containing trace elements. In addition, the dissolution amount of each trace elements depends on the mother glass composition and the quantity of each trace elements, which determine the dissolving velocity of chemical elements.
Design of E-Tongue System using Neural Network

In this paper, we have designed and implemented a portable e-tongue (electronic tongue) system using MACS (multi array chemical sensor) and PDA. The system embedded in PDA has merits such as comfortable user interface and data transfer by internet from on-site to remote computer. MACS was made up 7 electrodes (
, pH) and a reference electrode. For learning the system, we adapted the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm based on the back-propagation, which could iteratively learned the pre-determined standard patterns, in e-tongue system. Conclusionally, the relationship between the standard patterns and unknown pattern can be easily analyzed. The e-tongue was applied to whiskeys and cognac (one high level whisky, one low level whiskey, two cognac) and 2 sample whiskeys for each standard patterns and unknown patterns. The relationship between the standard patterns and unknown patterns can be easily analyzed.
Intersymbol Interference of Optical Signal in Wireless Optical Communication System

When an optical pulse propagates through the atmospheric channel, the atmospheric turbulence attenuates and spreads this pulse. This attenuation and broadening of pulse are occurred by the fluctuation in the arrival time of pulse at the optical receiver. This pulse broadening induces the intersymbol interference (ISI) between the adjacent pulses. finally, the adjacent pulses are overlapped and the bit rate and the repeaterless transmission length are limited by the ISI. In digital communication system, therefore, the pulse broadening is more important factor than the attenuation. In this paper, thus, we find the ISI in the atmospheric turbulence as the function of the structure constant for the refractive index fluctuation that presents the strength of turbulence using the temporal momentum function and present it by numerical analysis.
Design of Micro-meter Position Driver for X-Y Stage Using Linear Ultrasonic Motor

The ultrasonic piezo motor is a new type motor that has an excellent performance and many useful features that electromagnetic motors do not have. But, it suffers from severe system non-linearities and parameter variations especially during speed control. Therefore, it is difficult to accomplish satisfactory control performance by using the conventional PID controller. A Study on University-Industry Collaboration Team Lenders' Leadership in Korean Universities

Under the difficult economy circumstances of Korean universities and industries, Korean government has been strongly emphasizing industry-university collaboration to make percentage of employment among college/university graduates higher as well as prosperity of Korean economy. In order to make effective improvement for universities, industries, local society, and national economic status, it is required to recognize the importance of university-industry collaboration team leader's leadership; which relates various employers personal behaviors with organizational goals and affects the employer's organizational behaviors in university-industry collaboration team. This study aims to suggest the effective strategic leadership behaviors fur the industry-university collaboration team leader in Korean universities as they are to manage university faculty members, professors, and researchers and/or top management of business enterprises and to achieve the organizational goals through literatures concerned about leadership and university-industry collaboration.
Implementation of Global Position Location System using X.400 Protocol

The proposed system in this paper is designed to provide users with a means of global location information using Orbcomm satellite communication and X.400 protocol. The system's two-way data transmission capabilities allow users to track mobile or fixed objects anywhere in the world via Internet. This study utilizes the X.400 protocol, and the SIP(Serial Interface Protocol) and self defined control protocol to implement data communication link in this paper. Data processor board connected to SC(Subscriber Communicator) is also designed and implemented to interface with GPS receiver. The experimental results of the proposed global position location system is evaluated through real-time experiments, and we have confirmed it works well according to the protocol designed in this paper.
Cellular Phone Electromagnetic Field Effect on the Melatonin Receptor Expression in the Mouse Brain

Two mammalian receptors are reported (MT1A and MT1B). In this experiments, MT1A is expressed at a little enhanced level (about 8 times) in hypothalamus of the 9 hours exposed mice. In other part of the brain, the expression level of the MT1A and MT1B is elevated at nearly same level: 16 times in cerebellum, 128 times in hippocampus and in thalamus, respectively. But MT1B is expressed at very high level (about thousand times) in hypothalamus of the 9 hours exposed mice.
Development of Food Waste Fermentation System by Low Water-Ratio Salt Minimization

The food wastes recycling system should be constructed before 2005 in the city area. In order to manufacture the good compost, salt remaining rate should be minimized. We studied the effective method of minimizing salt ratio by diluting with low water ratio. We got the salt remaining ratio less than 0.3% by effective fragmentation method, and we applied the IR heating in order to make good compost.
Real Time Eye and Gaze Tracking

This paper describes preliminary results we have obtained in developing a computer vision system based on active IR illumination for real time gaze tracking for interactive graphic display. Unlike most of the existing gaze tracking techniques, which often require assuming a static head to work well and require a cumbersome calibration process for each person, our gaze tracker can perform robust and accurate gaze estimation without calibration and under rather significant head movement. This is made possible by a new gaze calibration procedure that identifies the mapping from pupil parameters to screen coordinates using the Generalized Regression Neural Networks (GRNN). With GRNN, the mapping does not have to be an analytical function and head movement is explicitly accounted for by the gaze mapping function. Furthermore, the mapping function can generalize to other individuals not used in the training. The effectiveness of our gaze tracker is demonstrated by preliminary experiments that involve gaze-contingent interactive graphic display.
A Study on the Performance of Boiling Beat Transfer of Inclined Thermosyphon Heat Exchangers with Internal Grooves

This study concerns the performance of boiling heat transfer in inclined thermosyphons with internal grooves. A study was carried out with the performance of the heat transfer of the inclined thermosyphon having 60 internal grooves in which boiling and condensation occur. A plain thermosyphon having the same inner and outer diameter as the grooved thermosyphon is also tested for comparison. Distilled water, methanol and ethanol have been used as the working fluid. The inclination angle, three working fluids, heat flux and the boiling heat transfer coefficient at the evaporator zone are estimated from the experimental results. The experimental results have been assessed and compared with existing correlations. Imura's and Kusuda's correlation for boiling showed in good agreement with experimental results within
in plain thermosyphon. The high heat transfer coefficient was found between

for methanol and ethanol. The relatively high rates of heat transfer have been achieved in the thermosyphon with internal micro grooves.

Studies on the Antibacterial Effects of Electrolyzed Reduced Water

The antibacterial effects of electrolyzed reduced water on the bacterial growth were studied in this investigation. Upon treating with electrolyzed reduced water for 2 minutes, about 70% Escherichia coli and 61% Bacillus cereus were controlled. When these two bacteria were exposed to electrolyzed reduced water for 30 minutes, about 89% Escherichia coli and 94% Bacillus cereus were controlled. About 55% Pseudomonas aeruginosa was also controlled upon treateing with electrolyzed reduced water for 2 minutes, and 65% Pseudomonas aeruginosa was controlled during 4 hour incubation. When Staphylococcus epidermidis was treated with electrolyzed reduced water for 4 hours, 73% of the bacterial growth was inhibited, while only 44% Staphylococcus aureus.subsp.aureus was controlled with electrolyzed reduced water for 4 hours.
