Oh, Hae-Sook ;
The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 19, issue 4, 2008, Pages 481~495
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of socio-demographic and health-related perceptions and twenty dietary behaviors on the superiority and preference, convenient use of and purchase motives of vegetables among 370 women(mean age 43.9) in Seoul and metropolitan and Gangwon area. Data was collected using a questionnaire developed in advanced studies. Almost all subjects rated vegetables more predominantly than grains or meats on the basis of health, diversity, and convenience to purchase. Recognition of healthly funcions of diet, purpose of diet and some dietary behaviors had influence on preference for vegetables. Those who recognized that diet had the function of disease control and prevention, knew the healthy options vegetables provide us, such as, preventing us from geriatric diseases, good sources of vitamins and minerals and considered other motives aside from health issues. From Pearsons's correlation analysis, it was revealed that sufficient time for meal preparation and pleasant eating and desirable life style and dietary attitudes, and a better understanding of nutrition were positively correlated with consumption of more vegetables and convenient use of vegetables. The subjects who recognized the ability of food to help prevent diseases, had a preference for vegetables and attitude to use nutritional knowledge and also considered the nutrition values of vegetables and environment friendliness. Everyday use of vegetables such as consuming a variety of different vegetables, a families favorite vegetables and variation of cooking methods had correlated positively with purchase motives. Therefore to encourage consumption of vegetables, it is important to notice three points continuously; first, practical information of nutritive values of vegetables, the contribution of vegetables in current animal protein foods centered diet and healthful functionalities. Second, the importance of regular diet and steadfast attitude and lifestyle. Finally, the quality of the market where the products are bought such as, quality control of freshness, sanitation, expression of producer and a pleasant environment to shop in.

Ku, Cha-Hyeong ; Lee, Sang-Gun ; Yoon, Yoo-Shik ;
The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 19, issue 4, 2008, Pages 497~507
This study investigated relationships between the importance and satisfaction of rice-based menu selection attributes at family restaurants. For data collection, a total of 250 copies of questionnaires were distributed to 4-year college students who had an experience of a rice-based menu at casual dining restaurants, and finally 221 surveys (88.4%) among them were analyzed by using SPSS Win ver. 11.5. Twenty selection attributes were used to test the level of importance and satisfaction for rice-based menu. The factor analysis identified six dimensions of the importance of rice-based menu selection attributes; variety of items, menu information, recommendation & atmosphere, food quality, preferred menu, and price. Also, five dimensions of satisfaction were identified as nutrition & taste, menu information, preferred menu & atmosphere, variety of items, and cooking. Canonical correlation analysis revealed that preferred menu factor of importance was highly correlated with preferred menu and restaurant atmosphere factor of satisfaction of rice-based menu selection. The managerial implications of these results for rice-base menu selection attributes are as follows: There seems to be a need to develop a variety of rice-based menus, because rice-based menus tend to be considered as an additional menu, not a main course. Aggressive marketing and communication strategies are necessary to position rice-based menu as a main course for college students and as a major maket segment to family restaurants.

A Study on the Filipino Marriage and a Migrant Women's Married Life
Kim, Hyun-Kyoung ; Shin, Dong-Ju ;
The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 19, issue 4, 2008, Pages 519~535
The purpose of this study is to understand a migrant women's married life. The study examined migrant Filipino women's married lives, motives for marriage and migration to Korea, and their married life experiences. The results showed that these women get married to Korean men in pursuit of an economically better life to support their family in the Philippines through marriage migration. As for Filipino women's perceived difficulties in married life, they indicated hardships with redrawing the boundaries of nationality, as well as their husbands' faults or bad habits which are different from what they expected before marriage. Other difficulties mentioned were the peculiar culture of living with parents-in-law, and general difficulties in married life. This study showed that marriage migration results not from external pressure or motives but ultimately from their own decision in a social and cultural context. It was also implicated that Korea's superior position to the Philippines in international economic power has an effect on family relations. The boundaries of nationality are redrawn according to their married life. In addition, it was revealed that the Korean born children of migrant mothers who divorce because of difficulties in married life are in a very poor situation as their national identity depends on their mother's future marriage relations.

Park, Jung-Sook ;
The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 19, issue 4, 2008, Pages 537~546
The purposes of the study was to identify customers' satisfaction factors regarding foods and services in food courts in big department stores and discount stores in Seoul and Cheonan. A survey of 235 customers was conducted regarding customer satisfaction levels and factors of food and services. Customers' perceived level of attributes were identified into eight underlying dimensions by factor analysis as follows: factor 1 was "cleanliness": factor 2 "service quality": factor 3 "accuracy": factor 4 "atomosphere": factor 5 "food quality": factor 6 "menu information": factor 7 "price" and the eighth factor was "food result". Regression analysis indicated that "cleanliness" was found to be the most important factor contributing to customers' overall satisfaction. There were significant differences in customers' perceived satisfaction level of "food quality"(p<0.01), "accuracy", and "price" factors(p<0.05) between department stores and discount store. The customers' perceived satisfaction levels of "accuracy", "food quality" and "price" factor at a large store food court are higher than those of department store food court. Comparing location of food court, there were significant differences in customers' perceived satisfaction level of "accuracy" and "price" factors between in Seoul and Cheonan(p<0.001). The customers' perceived satisfaction levels of "accuracy" and "price" at the discount store in Seoul are lower than those of food court at Cheonan. It is suggested that the management should pay attention to the sanitation of their dinning halls, kitchens, hygienic dishes, hygienic water fountain, employee hygiene, and a proper place to put used dishes to increase the customers' satisfaction.

The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 19, issue 4, 2008, Pages 559~568
Even though snacks or meals purchased by teenagers have dramatically increased in Korea, it has not been investigated whether teenagers know and take notice of the nutrition label. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the usefulness and utilization of food and nutrition labels amongst teenagers. Questionnaires were distributed 814 of junior-high school students and were completed by self-administrated questionnaires. Questionnaires included questions regarding general characteristics, perception and utilization of food and nutrition labels and degree of necessity and satisfaction on food products and nutrition labels. Data was analyzed with regards to sex and school year by using a SAS package program. Significant differences of each variable were tested by using the
-test, t-test and ANOVA. Only 4.4% of participants were well informed about food and nutrition labels, while 26.0% of them did not know about it. Most of participants(78%) perceived that food and nutrition labeling system is necessary but are not satisfied with it. More of them did not check the food and nutrition label when they purchased food. Students usually checked the food and nutrition label to know about the nutritional value, and additives. The survey showed that more than three quarters of participants take notice of the food and nutrition label on products whereas only 57.7% of them knew what the food and nutrition actually meant. This study showed that most teenagers did not know the food and nutrition label, didn't have right information and didn't use it. Therefore, it is necessary to include an educational program about the food and nutrition label in the school curriculum and that will help students use the nutrition label and help them choose healthy food.

Kim, Hyoung-Jai ;
The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 19, issue 4, 2008, Pages 569~580
The purpose of this study is to investigate opposites acquisition and tendency of processing negations about directional oppositionality from 3- to 6-old Korean children. The data were collected from 80 children from a daycare center and 20 university students in Busan, Korea. In Experiment 1, participants were asked to produce opposites for common terms related to colors, directions, and dimension adjectives. In Experiment 2, they were asked to make pictures corresponding to statements with negations(e. g. The arrow is NOT pointing up.). Summarizing the overall results, first, children over 5 considered 'blue' and 'red' as opposites colors in the case of not well-known color opposites. If there exists an opposite color, color opposites have been acquired from 6 year-olds, the directional opposites started from 3 year-olds, and the opposites of dimension adjectives did from 5 year-olds. Second, preferring the antipodal color opposites started from 6 and preferring the antipodal direction did from 3. Consequently, 3-to 6 year-old children acquired opposites at different age and opposites dimension. Also the opposites dimension have an effect on processing negation of young children.

The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 19, issue 4, 2008, Pages 581~595
This study attempts to provide the main reasons and decision-making processes for marriage migration from a Vietnamese' perspective. For this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted in Vietnam. Interviewees are those who got married to foreigners but are waiting for visas and parents whose daughters are marriage migrants. According to 23 interviewees, the main reasons of marriage migration are as follows: individual aspiration, sacrifice for others, and the circumstantial effects or love. Individual aspiration, in particular, leads to an active pursuit of international marriage. Parental involvement in the decision-making process is rarely found. Decision seems to be wholly made by the female migrant herself based on an individualistic orientation.

Kim, Eun-Ja ; Im, Chil-Seong ; Kim, Young ; Rhee, Sang-Young ;
The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 19, issue 4, 2008, Pages 619~640
The objective of this study is to promote alternative plans on the prejudiced and distorted parts in school textbooks in the aspect of multi-functionality of agriculture and rural community. This was done through analysis of the contents in 44 kinds of schoolbooks in Korean language (30 of elementary school, 12 of middle school and 2 of high school). This will lead to promote the understanding about the multi-functionality and form the proper value system related to agriculture and rural community for children and juveniles using schoolbooks. A content analysis which is a research tool to classify all contents of materials containing the properties to become the object of interest in a systematic way, was employed to examine to what extent the contents on agriculture and rural community were reflected in the textbooks for elementary school, middle school and high school. The content analysis was done in two categories, namely; application method and function view. Application method had four types of texts, cases, figures pictures, and activities, while function view emphasized the relevance for the multi-functionality of agriculture and rural community (i.e., function of environment preservation, function of rural scenery and rural traditional culture conservation, function of maintenance and development of local society, and function of food security). The results of application method in elementary school showed that the textbook of the second-year class having a large amount of figures pictures related to agriculture and rural community, had the highest frequency in all six grades. In the function view, the environment preservation function was most abundant among a variety of multi-functionalities. In middle school, the average frequency had shown a rapid decrease. However, the function of environment preservation in the function view and the texts by application method were most frequent. in the first-year class. In high school, however, any mention related to agriculture and rural community was not made, in spite of the fact that the ten parts of textbook contained a lot of contents with a reasonable level. Based on the results of content analysis, findings and recommendations by part in textbooks for elementary school, middle school and high school have been drawn, and several examples for the content development to be included in the textbooks were listed.

Cho, Yun-Mi ; Lee, Sook ;
The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 19, issue 4, 2008, Pages 641~658
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of parent-child communication, and the self-efficacy of middle school students on school adjustment. The data was collected from 285 middle school students living in Kwangju. For statistical analysis, Cronbach'
, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe's multiple Comparison Analysis, LSD and hierarchical regression analysis were used. The results were summarized as follows : concerning connections between demographic variables and parent-child communication, the education of the father made the most significant difference, followed by living standard, free time for communication with the father, and free time for communication with the mother. The level of communication with parent made a significant difference to each sub-factor of school adjustment. As a result of making a hierarchical regression analysis to find out the relative impact of the demographic variables on school adjustment, self-efficacy was identified as the most important variable and predictor of school adjustment. The independent variables exercised a different influence on the sub-factors of school adjustment. These results indicated that adolescent's self-efficacy is the most important variable to improve the school adjustment of students.

Kim, Young ; Kim, Eun-Ja ; Rhee, Sang-Young ; Lee, Seung-Joo ;
The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 19, issue 4, 2008, Pages 659~672
There is a need to develop diverse cultivation species with reference to the favorites and farming experiences of allotment garden participants, in addition to the crops being cultivated in the gardens. In this study, therefore, a survey on the status of cultivation and the demand for herb crops for the garden participants was conducted. Current trend of the programmes related to allotment garden for city dwellers, executed by various relevant organizations was analyzed. A questionnaire was accomplished by adult participants experiencing farming in allotments. Likewise, interview with farm proprietors was conducted. The results showed that the number of crop species cultivated in allotments was about ten species. The purchase of seeds and nursery plants was mainly dependent on the farmland proprietors. The selection of the crops was made by both wife and husband. The status of herb utilization indicated that 5.7% of participants were cultivating or had cultivated herb plants. Sixty-two percent of participants were not cultivating herb plants because they did not know how. The purposes of using herbs were for medicine and beauty (22.0%), for spices (22.0%) and for enjoyment (29.0%). Thirty-four percent (34.0%) of participants were interested or would like to use the herbs in the future for medicine and beauty, 39.0% for spices and 31.7% for enjoyment. It is expected that the demand for herbs would increase. Also, 78.3% of participants had the intension or had taken into consideration to cultivate the herb plants, if the farmland proprietors would provide the plants. And, they had interest in planting, management and post harvest utilization and if a reference material would be provided as well. An approach to plant new crops might be possible to those who have more than four years of farming experience and possess relatively high level of cultivation techniques. In conclusion, the favorable crop cultivation strategy corresponding to the participants' abilities; and rental process were essential for the sustainable operation of allotment gardens and expanded number of participants. Moreover, there is a need to pay attention to the city dwellers who have a lot of farming experiences in allotment gardens to maintain agriculture and rural community. This is so, because they are interested in agriculture and rural community and most of them replied that they had intentions to move to rural areas in the future.

Lee, Kwee-Ock ;
The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 19, issue 4, 2008, Pages 673~684
The purpose of this study is to compare the complexity of language level between verbally-precocious and typically-developing children from 2 to 3 years-old. Participants were 15 children classified as verbally-precocious were scored at the mean 56.85(expressive language) and 88.82(receptive language), and another 15 children classified as typically developing did at the mean 33.51(expressive language) and 58.01(receptive language) on MCDI-K. Each child's spontaneous utterances in interaction with her caregiver were collected at three different times with 6 months interval. All of the utterances were transcribed and analyzed for the use of MLU and lexical diversity by using KCLA. Summarizing the overall results, verbally-precocious children had significantly higher language abilities than typically-developing children at each time, and there were significant differences between two groups in syntactic and semantic language development, showing that verbally-precocious children indicated distinctive MLU and lexical diversity. These results suggest a high degree of stability in precocious verbal status, with variations in language complexity during conversations contributing to later differences in their language ability.
