Lee, Kwan ; Lim, Hyun-Sul ; Min, Young-Sun ; Kim, Byoung-Seok ;
The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 23, issue 4, 2012, Pages 383~397
DOI : 10.7856/kjcls.2012.23.4.383
The incidence of zoonoses in Korea has recently increased. But the study for high risk group such as pig farmers to zoonoses has not been conducted in Korea. Thus we reviewed the articles in order to obtain basic data for zoonoses among pig farmers, especially in rural communities. Pigs are one of the most important domestic livestock in Korea not only from economic standpoint but also from standpoint of food. Pigs also represent a potential reservoir for many novel pathogens, therefore may transmit these to humans via direct contact, vectors such as mosquitos, or contaminated meat. The zoonoses associated with pigs can be classified into bacterial pathogen, viruses and so on. Bacterial zoonoses include brucellosis, leptospirosis, listeriosis, enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli infection, pasteurellosis, salmonellosis, yersiniosis, tuberculosis, anthrax, necrobacillosis, swine erysipelas, erysipeloid, melioidosis, Streptococcus suis infection, Clostrium difficile infection, and campylobactor infection. Viral zoonoses consist of Japanese encephalitis, swine influenza, Nipah virus, Reston ebolavirus, and hepatitis E virus infection. Other type of zoonoses include actinomycosis, toxoplasmosis and Taenia solium infection. These zoonoses were important in Korean health policy but lately they have been overlooked. For effective health policy, we need to study zoonoses associated with pigs, and clinicians and veterinarians must care deeply about these zoonoses.

Park, Ok Im ; Moon, Hee ;
The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 23, issue 4, 2012, Pages 399~409
DOI : 10.7856/kjcls.2012.23.4.399
This research has attempted to investigate the perception of elderly women on self esteem, psychological well-being and the moderating effect of family support on self esteem and psychological well-being. Two-hundred and six of elderly women who used senior welfare centers had been participating in the research, and their questionnaires had been filled out during personal interviews. The collected data had been analysed by using SPSS Win 15.0 and the results of this study are as follows. Firstly, the level of self-esteem perceived by elderly women was a little bit higher than middle level and the level of psychological well-being appeared to be moderate. Secondly, it was found that the self esteem of elderly women affected psychological well-being and that the higher the participants perceived self esteem, the higher the level of psychological well-being. Thirdly, family support appeared to have a moderating effect in relation to self esteem and psychological well-being. As it were, the higher the perception level of elderly women was, the higher impact of their self esteem on their psychological well-being. Therefore, there needs to be a re-consideration of the importance of family support which is being weakened due to family nuclearization as well as mechanisms for improving family support.

The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 23, issue 4, 2012, Pages 411~418
DOI : 10.7856/kjcls.2012.23.4.411
Phthalates and di-2-ethylhexyladipate are both widely used as industrial chemicals and exposure high levels over long periods of time can cause toxicity, estrogenic responses and endocrine disruption properties in both humans and animals. So far, their global monitoring in environmental matrices has been performed continuously. A developed method, including modified SPEED`98 (Japan Environment Agency) and USEPA was established for simple and rapid determination of phthalates and di-2-ethylhexyladipate in various matrices. This method was applied to explore the distribution levels in domestic environmental media such as water, soil and sediment. Eight phthalates (DEP(di-ethyl), DEHP(di-[2-ethyl-hexyl]), DprP (di-propyl), DBP(di-n-butyl), DPP(di-n-pentyl), DHP(di-n-hexyl), DCHP(di-cyclohexyl), BBP(butyl benzyl) and Adipate (di-2-ethylhexyl adipate) were investigated by seasonal sampling(spring, autumn) at 24 domestic sites. Phthalates and adipate were not detected in water samples and DEP, DBP, and DEHP were mainly detected in soil and sediment samples. The concentrations of DEP and DBP excluding DEHP in spring were higher in soil than those of sediment. Total concentrations of phthalates were significantly decreased in autumn for both soil and sediment.

Lee, Jeong Hwa ; Choi, Won Kyu ;
The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 23, issue 4, 2012, Pages 419~439
DOI : 10.7856/kjcls.2012.23.4.419
Family dissolution and economic difficulties of the grandchild`s parents are the most prevailing reason for an increase of grandparent-headed families in rural Korea. However, there is a lack of empirical research looking at the experiences of custodial grandmothers, social support, and their psychological well-being. In this regard, this study examined the effect of social support (formal & informal) on the psychological well-being of custodial grandmothers in rural Korea. For this purpose, quantitative and qualitative research methods were conducted. Quantitative data were gathered, using structured questionnaire, from 311 grandmothers who were raising their grandchildren in rural Korea as primary care-givers. Statistical methods used for data analysis were descriptive statistics and hierarchical regression analysis with SPSS WIN 19.0 programs. Qualitative data were collected by in-depth interviews to 10 custodial grandmothers in rural area. The results of this study are as follows. First, almost half of the parents of the grandchild didn`t visit and didn`t call anymore. Some relatives -aunt, uncle, etc.- support the grandparent-headed family economically and emotionally. 3/4 of the grandparent-headed families were supported by the government and community. This was not small numbers, but the amount of economic support was low. Second, grandmothers in the study showed quite a high level of depression while their happiness level was relatively low. There were differences in the factors influencing the level of happiness/depression of these rural grandmothers. Overall, the study`s results showed the importance of formal & informal support for psychological well-being of the custodial grandmothers in rural Korea. Policy and theoretical implications are discussed.

The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 23, issue 4, 2012, Pages 467~478
DOI : 10.7856/kjcls.2012.23.4.467
This study was carried out to develop nutrition education materials for nutrient intake and the prevention of disease for the elderly and to test their effects on the health-related matters and nutrition intakes after nutrition education. The mean age of the subjects was 71.6 years old. Diet adjustment for health increased a little bit from 2.2% to 11.1% after education but with no significance. The highest reported chronic illness was hypertension. The drinking of the subjects decreased a little bit after their education but wasn`t significant. There were no significant changes to the frequency of food consumption across all the items after education, but there was a small increase to the daily intake of milk and dairy products and fruits and to a balanced diet three times per day. There was a significant increase in the intake of such nutrients as energy(p<0.05), protein(p<0.01), lipid(p<0.05), phosphorus(p<0.05), sodium (p<0.05), vitamin
(p<0.05), and niacin(p<0.001) after education. Those findings show that nutrition education provided to the elderly had no clear effects on the items that required memorization such as nutrition knowledge but did have some effects on dietary life. If the nutrition education requiring memorization is provided repeatedly with data supplemented, more effective nutrition management will be possible.

DOI : 10.7856/kjcls.2012.23.4.491
This research is looking for the relation between the positive psychology of would-be child teachers and leadership and that`s influence. The researchers examined positive psychology and leadership with 330 would-be teachers(13 boys, 317 girls) located in Gwang-Ju and the Jeonnam Region. Questionnaire was used to measure would-be teachers. The collected data analyzed the positive psychology of would-be teachers and leaders, including sub-factors for mean(M), standard deviation(SD) and Pearson product-moment correlation according to subject for inquiry. Then regression analysis through SPSS WIN 17.0 for checking the effects of the would-be child teachers`s positive psychology with their leadership skill was used. The result of the research was that the positive psychology of would-be child teachers and leadership of the product-moment correlated in all areas. Especially the most influence on positive psychology is the ability of human relationship among leadership sub-variables, and the relation between positive psychology and leadership are very important for making positive changes in society. This implies that there is a need for more educational sponsorship regarding positive psychology and leadership for would-be child teachers.

Kim, Ji-Eun ; Park, Dong-Yean ;
The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 23, issue 4, 2012, Pages 523~535
DOI : 10.7856/kjcls.2012.23.4.523
This study was conducted to investigate and improve experiences regarding breastfeeding education. Questionnaires were distributed to 185 women with children 24 months of age and younger. The period of breastfeeding was about 7.2 months and showed significant differences (p<0.01) according to women`s age. About 56% of the respondents participated in breastfeeding education. Women with 3 or more children showed the highest rates of participation compared to the women in other groups(p<0.05). The reason for nonparticipation showed significant differences (p<0.05) according to women`s occupation. The biggest reason for nonparticipation was `lack of time` for housewives and `no information` for working women. The subjects of education were benefits(20%) and techniques(19%) of breastfeeding, breast care before and after delivery(15%), nutrition care for breastfeeding mothers(11%), etc. The teaching method used most frequently was lecturing(32%). Around 81% of women were not satisfied with their breastfeeding education. The most useful subject was breastfeeding techniques(59%). Thirty percent of women pointed out that `assessing mother`s milk quantity` was the subject which women wanted to learn but were not taught enough about. Around 76% of women wanted more education and preferred personalized education such as home visitation(35%) and personal counselling(27%). Desired education methods showed significant differences(p<0.05) according to women`s occupations. `Home visitation` was the most preferred method for housewives and `personal counselling` for working women. These results showed breastfeeding education was not helpful for practical life. Therefore, breastfeeding education should reflect women`s individual needs to heighten its effectiveness.

Han, Gyusang ; Chung, Hae-Jung ; Lee, Youngmi ; Yoon, Jihyun ;
The Korean Journal of Community Living Science, volume 23, issue 4, 2012, Pages 537~552
DOI : 10.7856/kjcls.2012.23.4.537
This study was conducted to investigate the quality characteristics of cooked rice with cereals frequently consumed in Korea by blending ratio. Seven kinds of cereals, white rice, glutinous barley, brown rice, black rice, glutinous rice, glutinous foxtail millet and proso millet, were chosen for the study. According to the results from rapid viscosity analyzer, glutinous barley had the lowest pasting temperature(
) and black rice had the highest values in the peak(231.77 RVU), trough(162.25 RVU), final viscosity(295.81 RVU) and set back(64.05 RVU)(p<0.05). Water absorption rate by soaking time for black rice and brown rice was increased only 18.77% and 14.57%, respectively, even after 120 minutes, whereas those of other cereals were increased up to 20.28~39.32% after 50 minutes. The pasting characteristics of white rice blended with cereals tended to be lower than white rice in the peak, trough, and final viscosity. Textural property of cooked white rice blended with black rice, brown rice, and glutinous foxtail millet showed a significantly higher value for hardness than that of cooked white rice only(p<0.05). The most preferred blending ratio of the respective cereals was 25% for glutinous barley, 10% for black rice, brown rice and proso millet, and 5% for glutinous foxtail millet and glutinous rice in the sensory evaluation for overall quality, but there were no significant differences except glutinous barley, brown rice and glutinous foxtail millet.
