One-dimensional Hydraulic Modeling of Open Channel Flow Using the Riemann Approximate Solver - Application for Natural River

The objective of this study is to develop the scheme to apply one-dimensional finite volume method (FVM) to natural river with complex geometry. In the previous study, FVM using the Riemann approximate solver was performed successfully in the various cases of dam-break, flood propagation, etc. with simple and rectangular cross-sections. We introduced the transform the natural into equivalent rectangular cross-sections. As a result of this way, the momentum equation was modified. The accuracy and applicability of newly developed scheme are demonstrated by means of a test example with exact solution, which uses triangular cross-sections. Secondly, this model is applied to natural river with irregular cross-sections and non-uniform lengths between cross-sections. The results shows that the aspect of flood propagation, location and height of hydraulic jump, and numerical solutions of maximum water level are in good agreement with the measured data. Using the developed scheme in this study, existing numerical schemes conducted in simple cross-sections can be directly applied to natural river without complicated numerical treatment.
Valuation of Irrigation Water: A Chance-Constrained Programming Approach

This study estimates the value of irrigation water in Korea using an economic programming model that is constructed with all the resource endowment constraints, technology restrictions and policy variables. The variability and uncertainty of water resource endowment are incorporated into the model through the chance-constrained technique. Solving the profit maximization problems with gradually reduced water endowments, we derive a series of shadow values of irrigation water. It has been found that uncertainty in water supply raises the damage from water loss, and the marginal damage increases in water loss.
Effect of Improved Runoff Module in SWAT on Water Quality Simulation

For reliable water quality simulation by semi distributed model, accurate daily runoff simulation should have preceded. In this study, newly developed channel routing method which is nonlinear storage method is combination of Muskingum routing method and variable storage routing method and temporally weighted average curve number method were applied for effect analysis of water quality simulation. Developed modules, which are added in SWAT models and simulation, were conducted for the Chungju dam watershed. The simulation result by each module applied effect. As a result of analysis contribute water quality modeling, nonlinear storage method is more effective than temporally weighted average curve number method. Nutrient loading discharge was affected by development of runoff delaying from improvement of channel routing, because of characteristics of nonpoint source pollution.
Assessment of EFDC Model for Hydrodynamic Analysis in the Nakdong River

This study analyzed a hydrodynamic behavior using the EFDC model (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) in the downstream of the Nakdong River in the case of a storm surge and a localized torrential rainfall caused by a major typhoon, and the sea level rise caused by global warming. The study area is selected Gaduk island with the lower boundary and Jindong with the upper boundary, to investigate the total river hydrodynamic behavior including the estuary. In order to verify this numerical model, the calculated results was compared with the observed stage at each gauging point in case of the storm rainfall in 2003 and 2006. From the results, it was shown that the numerical model(EFDC) has high accuracy and is useful in simulating more various cases.
Numerical Analysis for Bed Changes in the Upstream Channel due to the Installation of Sediment Release Openings in the Flood Control Dam

Sediment release openings or pipes are installed in the flood control dam constructed to reduce flood damages, which are to allow water and sediments pass through the dam and to prevent flow blockage and sedimentation in the upstream area of the dam. The Hantan River Flood Control Dam (HRFCD) has been projected for flood damage reduction and sediment release openings and ecological passages are considered for the dam design. In this study, sediment deposition due to the construction of HRFCD was analyzed using the HEC-6 model and compared with the state before the dam construction with respect to the conditions of the annual mean daily discharge and annual discharge hydrograph. According to the numerical results, although downstream water levels were changed by the dam structure, the effects of bed changes were not propagated from the dam over 2 km upstream. Also, 2D numerical models of RMA2 and SED2D were used to predict bed changes in the upstream area with and without sediment release openings. Consequently, it is presented that sediment release openings decreased maximum deposition height in the upstream channel of the dam.
A Study on the Accuracy of the Maximum Likelihood Estimator of the Generalized Logistic Distribution According to Information Matrix

In this study, we compared the observed information matrix with the Fisher information matrix to estimate the uncertainty of maximum likelihood estimators of the generalized logistic (GL) distribution. The previous literatures recommended the use of the observed information matrix because this is convenient since this matrix is determined as the part of the parameter estimation procedure and there is little difference in accuracy between the observed information matrix and the Fisher information matrix for large sample size. The observed information matrix has been applied for the generalized logistic distribution based on the previous study without verification. For this purpose, a simulation experiment was performed to verify which matrix gave the better accuracy for the GL model. The simulation results showed that the variance-covariance of the ML parameters for the GL distribution came up with similar results to those of previous literature, but it is preferable to use of the Fisher information matrix to estimate the uncertainty of quantile of ML estimators.
Estimation of Water Quality Improvement Benefit Using Replacement Cost Approach

The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of the water quality improvement by water discharge through dams and to provide a benefit estimation methodology, taking domestic situation into consideration, by the replacement cost approach analyzed with a sewage treatment plant instead of an alternative dam. To this end, facility that alternates a dam must have same functions of the discharged water from the dam and the two facilities must be able to be compared objectively. To estimate the benefit, estimation methodology of alternative facility's cost is established and criteria of cost.benefit analysis that are duration period and ratio of large scale repairing expense was presented. As a case study, the water quality improvement benefit of Song-Li-Won dam was evaluated, which is planned to be built on Nae-Sung stream in Nak-Dong River system. The results of applying this methodology to Song-Li-Won dam are 644,006 million won of the annual average discharge and 1,351,526 million won of maximum discharge. The usage of the framework in this study is expected for estimation of water quality improvement benefit in case water quality improvement project is performed.
Influence of Noise on Chaotic Time Series

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of noise on chaotic time series. We used two time series of Lorenz system and of Great Salt Lake's volume data which are well known as chaotic systems. This study investigated the attractors, correlation dimensions, and Close Returns Plots and Close Returns Histograms of two time series to investigate the influence of noise as increasing noise level. We performed Chi-square test to the relative frequency of Close Returns Histogram from Close Returns Plot for the investigation of stochastic process of chaotic time series as increasing noise level of time series. As the results, two time series were changed from chaotic to stochastic series as noise level is increased. Finally, we analyzed the effect of noise cancellation by using Simple Moving Average method. The results of applications of Simple Moving Average method to Lorenz and GSL time series showed that we could effectively cancel the noise. Then we could confirm the applicability of Simple Moving Average method to cancel the noise for the hydrologic time series having chaotic characteristics.
